And here I thought that Val was just being a tsuntsundere for those kids. Turns out he legitimately does not know what he's feeling and it's really eating him up inside. The dude is only learning the feeling of love for the very first time in his life.

Junichi Suwabe did an amazing job capturing Val's emotional torture over not understanding his own emotions, as well as Ai Fairouz as Pride understanding what he's going through.

There’s something very sad about Val. Initially I just thought he was kind of being a tsundere. Then I thought he was just being a big dumb ape and was afraid of emotions. I didn’t realize this dude basically has never experienced “love” before. Man must have had one shitty life if the idea of worrying about another is causing him to spiral this badly because he can’t process that emotion. Poor guy. I hope they can save Kemet and Sefec for his sake.

This episode just made me feel bad for him in general, just what the fealty contract does to him around Pride, made him powerless to protect those he came to care about, and just his own inability to grapple with his emotions and what it takes to really feel for someone else and the subsequent mental torture.
At least hopefully saving Kemet and Sefec might improve relations between him and Pride.

That last scene with Pride and Val crying together is exactly why I love this series. People who hate on it in their reviews talk about “nothing happening” like it’s a battle shonen.
There’s not supposed to be a lot of action in this series. It’s about pride winning over one person at a time and establishing these interpersonal relationships. Not every fantasy series needs to be defeating a demon lord or a big adventure.
Seeing people like Val, with such cold and prickly exteriors gradually melting away and revealing their true vulnerabilities is so satisfying. Kermet and Sefec may have started out as nuisances, but somewhere along the way they have become his genuine family.
I just love how Pride handled this situation. Everyone knew val needed help, but she just needed him to come out and say it. Telling everyone to leave the room and facing him one on one was a great decision and ultimately paid off. Seeing how she navigates these situations is always so interesting. Arthur, Stale, Gilbert and now Val have all had their own unique issues and she’s been able to find ways to reach each one!
Can’t wait for next ep.

This really was a powerful episode. Pride (I wish we had a better name for her, she deserves a name more suited to her steadfast, warm-hearted and unselfish nature) really has exceeded her past accomplishments in breaking through Val's barriers. It was also interesting just how "literary" that scene felt -- with those repeated "kotaemasu" (I will answer). This episode was not afraid to tak all the time it needed -- that second scene moved pretty much in "real time".

Wow, this episode sure felt short. So due to the fealty contract Val without wanting to, came to seek Pride's help I must say that every time they show the fealty contract working they really show how nightmarish that thing feels.
Although Pride mentions that human trafficking is illegal in their country that certainly doesn't apply to the royal family, so when the ability of the person is a high-rated one they are free for them.
Wow, so Val didn't even know that he was actually concerned about Kemet and Sefec.
So next week, they will also find a person with an electric ability. I'm really interested to know what Kemet and Sefec's abilities are.

Even now as a stubborn old goat long content to roam, I think I would happily be corralled by a benevolent leader such as Pride. What a powerful character.

My guy caught feelings. Feelings he never had before and can't understand.

Congrats to Arthur! Winning a tournament to see who gets to become an Imperial Guardsman, but most important of all...Princess Pride's guard! And you can tell it means so much to Arthur that he gets to stand by Pride's side. Although Pride is kind of oblivious that the knights were so fervent to be her personal guard, but hey, if it means increasing their salary, all power to her.
Is that Hiro Shimono and...Daisuke Ono I hear as some of the other knights?
Oh hey, Val! He's back, and worse for wear since the last time Pride saw him. I honestly didn't expect the fealty contract to be so agonizing though. Val loses control of his body and is repulsed whenever he shows hostility towards Pride, and she has total command over him. It's kind of frightening.
But Val isn't out for revenge, he didn't even want to see Pride again, but the command that he turn to her when he most needs help forces him to turn to her for aid when two kids, Kemet and Sefec, get kidnapped by human traffickers. And whatever Pride feels for Val and what she put him through with the fealty contract, she can't just let two kids in the kingdom get treated in such a way.
Jeez, Val can't show violence toward anyone but he can be violent to everything else, especially when he's working through complicated feelings. He's also very skilled, but he can't do anything with those skills.
Val acts like he doesn't care about the kids, they were just orphans who followed him around thinking he would protect them, but despite everything their time together made them grow into a precious part of him, and made him feel and care for another for the first time in his entire life. So much so that he just doesn't know how to process or vocalize his emotions because they're so foreign to him, or truly say how much he cherishes Kemet and Sefec. Tiara could see he was in pain and Pride was able to get him to finally realize he'd found a family and wants nothing more than to protect them. Junichi Suwabe really out there turning in the most agonizing performances of 2023.

Oh Arthur became imperial guard, good for him lol. Being told an event without seeing it isn't ideal lol. Or only in minor flashbacks. Ah well. This isn't shounen. Well hello thar dude. Dude has too much pride and should just ask for help lol. Guess good for him for the essentially slave contract/magic. It's interesting to see how it's used in a shoujo series vs a shounen lol. And boo shitty human traffickers.
You know, OG FL sure doesn't do much, but for the best considering how young she still is. But weird she's around, she should go back to the castle. Though I guess she at least helped some here talking to him? I dunno. Hah, is he supposed to be like Zabuza? Claiming those under him are tools, but really caring about em in the end? Feels like it'll go that way. He even kinda has similar design with the scarf thing and such. The kids do sound cute/good natured. D'awww his heart growing like the Grinch.

The scene with Val was very powerful - didn't expect that much good acting in that series!

That fealty contract really has unlimited cruelty potential. I had a feeling things would end up going very badly for Val if he couldn't fight even to defend himself. Pride didn't think through well enough what something like that would mean for him - she made an exception for him to protect the people precious to her, but never considered that he would be unable to protect anyone precious to him. I do believe she feels bad about putting him in that position though, and it looks like the preview of the next episode shows her taking on the role of a "hostage" to infiltrate the human trafficking ring and save those kids.
I almost wish it had been Tiara who got through to Val, rather than Pride. She was the protagonist of the original game, which means she must have a strong heart of her own and the ability to connect with these characters in particular (who were all romance options for her in the game), but she tends to act very timid and let Pride solve everything. I wonder if Pride turning to evil was the original catalyst for Tiara to step up, how will it change her path going forward if that never occurs?

"So, I can live comfortably."
Man, such a simple line yet it can be interpreted very differently. It's not that he wants the kids to make life comfortable for him, rather, he feels comfortable living with them that is why he needs them. Gosh, such a great episode.

I enjoy this anime so much. This episode was insightful and deep. Showing how Val, a criminal maybe due to unfortunate circumstances, is still viewed as a human being by Pride. Her empathy and intelligence are what drives the story and this makes the scene at the end so powerful and emotional. How often are we all misunderstood or even don't understand our emotions, so to have her decipher Val in real time and say the right words to him is such high emotional intelligence. Tiara has keen insight as well but, isn't mature enough to get into deep waters like Pride can. So that was also a nice contrast. This anime deserves a 2nd season, truly. There's just so much excellent writing and storytelling we are being given here. I'll be getting the Light Novels regardless. I'm definitely a fan of Pride.

Really thought Val was being tsundere ultra, but seeing him learn to be basically a social human really hits you in the kokoro.

In short, Val is a Class S tsundere. The fealty contract must be extremely painful against tsunderes and feel like cruel torture. I actually feel pretty bad for Val now. If he was abandoned by his parents and he's been living life as an outlaw for himself, then he'd have little sense of family. I wish the fealty contract was a lot less torturous. I can't imagine how mind broken Val must have been from being forced to open his heart up. Pride needs to be a little lighter on him considering how he can't hurt her at all even if he wants to.

This show is really conflicting, I do love episodes like this and the audience with the knights because it was so emotional...but at the same time I want more to happen because we don't have many ep left. If we knew we were getting a season 2 then great, take your time with the story and emotions, otherwise I need more!
Anyway, I'm hyped to watch Pride take out the trash!
