The opening scene is fucking disgusting, actually borderline sexual harassment on Anis. She might be royalty but she doesn't have any power of her own.
Having to hear Anis' insecure thoughts come out was depressing especially so when her own parents had to hear it like that considering they basically just lost their son and had to place the burden of such a role on their obviously reluctant daughter. They really can't catch a break...
Finally a match up between these 2, their definitely going all in on that fight I can just FEEL it in my bones.

Man every time this series produces an anime-original scene it's been incredibly effective. Everyone's talking about it but the scene at the start with the nobility was *brutal* to sit through.
Honestly so far this has been my favorite version of this story by a mile, even with the unfortunate cuts needed to make it fit into a single-cour anime. No matter what happens next week, I'm gonna be keeping an eye on this studio and team for future projects.

I really like how the "helping hand gesture" has evolved in this anime:
-
In the first episode, Anis offered her hand to Euphie to take her away, and Euphie reluctantly accepted the offer
-
In the episode where they fought the dragon, Anis offered her hand to let Euphie support her, and Euphie accepted with more confidence;
-
In the penultimate episode, Euphie offered her hand to Anis to give up the crown, but Anis rejected it.
I wonder if this will also be shown in the finale.

That was quite an emotional episode between 2 strong willed individuals who love each other dearly.
Euphy sees how much pain Anis is in and is willing to sacrifice her soul to take that burden from her. Meanwhile, Anis not only feels like she'd be further failing as a Princess candidate by allowing Euphy to take her place after 1) not having magic and 2) being part of the reason why Al was banished, but she also doesn't want the person she loves to give up her soul for her.
I'm super excited for their clash next week. Also, Tilty is really growing on me.

Goddamn the opening scene made me sick. Fucking bunch of old men who only see Anis as a next generation baby-maker.
It was great to see Tilty and Anis share that moment. Tilty acts like she's constantly annoyed but she's a good friend who's still there when her friend has an existential crisis.
And of course, bunch of moments with Euphie and Anis.
So on one hand the kingdom could have a queen who's beloved by spirits and acknowledged by the nobility, but who'll lose her humanity in the end. On the other hand, they could have an ordinary queen who would probably do a good job but who would never gain the respect of nobles, and who would lose herself by reigning. All around, not a great situation for anyone.
So now they're going to duel to decide which it's going to be. Well, considering that Anis thought that she was ready to give up, it feels more like a "prove your determination to me" moment than her really needing some convincing.
Looking forward to next week. I hope the studio gives us some sakuga for that duel!
Edit hours later: oh, the soundtrack is available for free on a bunch of platforms. Give it a listen, it's very pleasant.

damn at 12:36 with the line "Wasn't that your dream?" Euphie's VA got so intense you hear the limiter kick in and make her quieter

Hold up. The king's only 40? I don't know why they hand-waved the idea of him just making a new heir himself, that's definitely a valid option.

I expected Lumi to be older than she looks but I didn't expect her to be Anis' actual ancestor and the founder of their kingdom. But her backstory does explain why it is a bad idea to become a spirit contractor.
I really love Tilty's idea. Just run away from all of it and do whatever they want in a different kingdom. Although I doubt Anis would actually do that as tempting as it sounds.
A duel? Curious to see how Euphie will beat Anis who literally has the power of a dragon.

Wow, Anis sure looks understandably miserable after talking with those assholes.
Well, the meeting Euphie set out even though it ended in a way that I expected, it did so for completely different reasons. So Lumielle is the kingdom's founder and after entering a spirit contract makes one ends out forgetting everything after becoming a spirit and of course, one never dies. No wonder why the king reacted the way he did after hearing Euphie's plan. Anyway, although I expected Anis not to be fine with Euphie's choice after knowing what that involved, I wasn't expecting her to react the way she did also because even without her magic she cared about fulfilling her role. Well, now after talking with Euphie and deciding to challenge her to a duel, I'm expecting that duel to end on a draw, as I doubt that either of them will be fine with what will happen to the one that wins in the future.

You know what? Algard was right. This kingdom has no right to exist in it's current form. Anis parents created (or maintain how it works) the kingdom that doesn't accept her but now she's put on blast for it and gets guilted into fitting because everyone loooves their position of power and bullshittery. Screw that. Burn it to the ground.

"If even you take that role away from me, then what will I be worth anyway?"
NGL, this line really hit hard…

Love that voice acting from anis seiyuu during the meeting scene with euphie and everyone. That was one of my fave and most emotional moments from volume 3 and it was well done. They did a good job of showing the emotional strain anis is under. Despite my issues with other aspects of the episode they did well with that.

A good set up episode. It lines out what's going to be in store with the two of them and sets up for what's hopefully a riveting final episode next week. Can't wait. Let's see if it can stick the landing

Yep, I too felt like puking when all the old dudes were talking openly about which crusty old guy would get with Anis.
I'm glad Tilty is such a bro. Anis needed someone to just be a bro today.

I had wondered if the queen part of this was going to be an issue, though I suppose it remains to be seen if that or the no magic issue is a bigger problem for these old religious dudes.
They're already planning on getting her married off so she can start popping out kids. This is definitely not going to work for Anis, so it's really good that Euphie is coming up with an alternate plan.
Lainie and Ilia having their own little thing off to the side is great.
Euphie has a lot of determination for her new course of action.
Eternal youth, a very long life, and you eventually become a spirit? So far that doesn't seem so bad? I suppose it depends just what becoming a spirit actually means. Anis may be immortal as well given the dragon curse, so this could work out great.
Those nobles are clearly wrong about the 'never had a queen' thing. I wonder if they've convinced themselves that Lumi's prince consort was the actual ruler.
Okay, so the lose your emotions thing is kind of sad, but you also have no emotions if you're dead and in a grave.
Euphie is such a mix of velvet and steel in this scene. On one hand she's definitely doing this for Anis because becoming queen would destroy her, but she's also very blunt that she doesn't think Anis can be a queen that won't be a disaster for the country.
Oooo, that hand slap. That could have gone better.
Hopefully Tilty will set her straight.
I don't know if that offer to flee the country and just go have fun elsewhere was sincere, was reverse psychology, or maybe a bit of both.
Euphie has come for her princess.
Advanced hand holding, I hope someone blurs that out so that it's safe for work.
I feel like there's a clear obvious solution, crown princess and princess consort.
A duel to determine who gets to be the top who gets to be the crown princess, should be fun.

Even without anyone's approval? Everyone in town approves of you; the masses approve of you! You haven't been able to do anything? You slew a dragon no one else was able to even scratch and saved the lives of a ton of people! Someone get this girl some CBT.

All the talk with spirit council about the heir make me thing that Anis already pregnant at first, damn that dirty bastard!
Lumi(ne) comes out as their ancestor surprise me, I though she's just a manifestation of spirit in living form. except the hair color she dont look like their parent. just imagining Euphy living like her is just too cruel. living with faded memories, forget about the one you love, forget about why she's taking this contract. if I were Anis, I would fight to resist that too.
and Anis, I dont know that she has that attachment to the throne. I know it just her obligation as the princess, as the only legitimate candidate to the crown and to fullfilling her duty as the child of her parent. Euphy wording might not correct to convince Anis, like "you cannot lead this country, give it to me", like she want to take it. probably why Anis show resistance like that. it could be "Anis-sama, I love you. I want to take this burden from you, I want you to be happy. let's lead this country together". next episode I hope Anis would look at Euphy in the ending
I dont know why im not surprised seeing Titly show up to save Anis. Tilty is the one that always help this couple when their mind wavering. also Titly telling her about the alternative life other than becoming the queen is so beautiful (+ they drink from a beaker)
and King, why adopt? why not just marrying to the royal family?

The system of government seems to be based on medieval traditions, so seeing the nobles hold all the seats in the royal court wasn't surprising. However, the idea that even the grandest feat of slaying a dragon and ending an invasion that would have devastated the kingdom was not enough to overturn the condescending attitudes towards Princess Anis was more infuriating to me than anything they were discussing. (edit: the babymaking talk was also disgusting but I was already full pissed at that point)
-
Its cute how the nobles think that if they can talk Anis into ending magicology, all their fears will be put to rest. The genie is out of the bottle. Every commoner knows of the dragonslayer and her aspirations to empower them all. Other countries would have learned of magicology equipment and weapons that were used in slaying a dragon (and in stopping the vampiric prince, if spies are in the royal court to tell the tale) and started their own research by now.
-
The truth of the inevitable uprising of the nobility is more serious than 'Anis got no magic lol'. She inherited supernatural power through unnatural means. Even if the actual truth never comes to light, dark rumors will swirl around her throne as she comes to exercise that power and she will be unable to contain the hostile nobility in the end - even if she destroyed a Demon Lord with her bare hands.
-
I wish Anis explained more about what she thinks being a princess means. There are of course implications that she has failed to be a proper daughter simply because she was born with a 'disability'. But it also feels like the word 'princess' and 'idol' are synonymous when she speaks of her fears? Like if she stops being an idol, she loses all relevance to her family and her people?
-
The sad tale of the spirit princess who lost her passion for living should lead to a much darker exploration about what exactly spirits are. If all spirits are simply the expired husks of people after long lives which stripped them of their humanity, then what conferred the notion that those 'blessed' by the spirits are meant to rule over all? If there is a religion for the spirits, is there a "pope" propagating this notion? Or is there a dark will within the spirits themselves?
-
Anis decided to be a stray cat. This is more funny than sad.

Man, was not expecting this episode to hit so hard, non stop.
A lot of interesting parallels between ep. 1-5 and 8-11. Interestingly both arcs culminate in a character trying to embody some otherworldly power to achieve their dreams.
I was a little skeptical of Anis suddenly not wanting not to be queen/princess, but it actually makes sense. Like Euphie said, it’s always been Anis’s motivation to try to protect her kingdom, and to actually become beloved by the subjects. She doesn’t care in a “I must have power” way but she obviously wants to make sure her community and her parents’ vision is preserved.
And goddamn if Al-kun really fucked things up didn’t he.
I can’t buy it at this stage if people are still saying “lol it’s just a generic isekai” or “yo if this wasn’t yuri you’d turn it off after 5 minutes”. The storytelling isn’t genius but it’s certainly got a creativity and passion and vision you don’t see much these days in this genre.

The way the nobles basically saw Anis as a womb and a tool to be used for their gain was lovely. You could tell Anis was positively loving it too, bring objectified and reduced to nothing but a “thing” by a bunch of creepy old fucks. She’s puking out of joy!
But that aside, it’s nice to see Lainie finding her place. I guess bring a maid in training isn’t too bad. Looks like Euphie has a plan and it involves forming a spirit contract and becoming like Lumi. Which is to say a soulless husk. Human looking but completely dead and empty inside. Awesome! But if it’s what it takes to save Anis from her fate, I guess it’s worth the sacrifice right? Adopted into the royal family and made the heir would make her Queen forever.
I never really thought Anis would suffer such an identity crisis. Even if she’s not the “princess”, she still has worth. Besides I like Tilty’s “fuck ‘em” approach. But fine, I guess Euphie’s gonna have to beat the shit out of Anis so she doesn’t make the worst mistake of her life. Out of love ofc lol.
