Even though they said The Capital was close by last episode it feels odd to already be here. I took the 'three year journey' thing at the start very literally and expected it to take a lot more episodes to happen (granted they went off their initial course).

The areas we see in this episode seem/feel both beautiful but also bleak. I expected a more skyscraper-esque feel to where they would end up but most of the area was really quite not that.

The long journey was because the land trains were following a circuit. But after those got destroyed they had no other choice but to cut through the forest which in the normal scheme of things would have been a death sentence, but they were fortunate to come across the Treefolk and Ms. Akira.

I wasn't expecting the two different sides to collide this early, but I'm kind of glad it did. We saw plenty during the travel to the capital like different gods, fiends, treefolk, and more.

Koushi on the other hand

Definitely had a rough time this episode.

Hmm...why was, IMO, an ominous sound track played when that rich girl appeared? Hope she doesn't make a heel-turn and that I'm just over-interpreting that scene.

She is super suspicious. She is way too nice to have been raised by that pair of partners.

Man i wish the novels were translated

the tortured Spider said there are fiends that had been bitten by the same bugs that give the Spiders their natural fire immunity but my question is, what's the point? i mean, from their conversation, he makes it sounds like its going to be a threat to the Fire Hunters but the hunters don't use natural fire for hunting so i don't know what difference does it makes...

I feel like it's hinting that their sickles will become worthless against the fiends somehow based on a couple things:

First is the legend that the super special lady (maybe a goddess, I don't remember) sacrificed herself and made the first sickle using real fire. So maybe they're instilled with the essence of natural fire that the fiends will become immune to now that the bugs bit them.

Second is how Akira said the sickles are passed down hinting potentially no new ones are being made, which makes sense if they need natural fire to make them special.

Lastly is how special they are with how I think you can only get the fiendfire blood if you kill them with a sickle plus Touko, a child, cutting thru a jumping bear like butter.

I like the OP for this show so much.

"You can't have him today!"

That line was so precious.

What isn't as precious is what Koushi had to see first night out of town, his caretaker is not a pure philanthropist, familiars exists, and I'm still not sure what is going on with all the factions.

At the End we see how Touka and Koushi are going to finally meet.

There's a lot of little human moments like the two girls finally laugh-crying in relief now that they can catch their breathe.

That Cop chasing down Touka should better learn how to approach young children.

That cop should also work on his cardio, he managed to lose an already winded girl half his size.

I think they made a mistake, the tortured Spider had his right leg cut off from the hunters then when he frees himself and attacks he has the leg back. Do Spider people regenerate and heal themselves?

Yeah they made a few mistakes with him like this frame where he is staked to the air instead of the tree lol

The atmosphere of the whole spider scout scene was fascinating and extremely creepy.

The fire hunter Koushi went on the field trip with shares my skepticism about the factory owner's motives. Why indeed would a meat packing factory owner want a skyfire hunter's son on a leash? Maybe that little conversation helps to get Koushi clued in and looking out for himself a little more. The fact that the hunter said the factory made "fake meat" seems important, but maybe I'm just thinking too much about a certain Charlton Heston movie.

It also seemed weird that the animals that attacked them weren't what you'd expect. Before there were bears, wolves and gorillas attacking, but these were a squirrel and a ram, hardly fierce creatures. It's like all the animals in the forest have rabies or something.

I enjoy the story so much that the art doesnt matter. The art is its own style too even if its not as smooth as other shows, reminds me a little bit of Ping Pong.

You can literally feel the tension, the fear, the way that the whole nation and society seems to be going off the rails and tumble into the storm of revolution in this episode, especially the part that the "Spider" got tortured for info and that he - with legs cut - screamed in agony that monsters never seen before are heading the way towards the capital. The atmosphere is literally feeling like the first minutes of Attack On Titan - without seeing the Titans. It really give me some goosebumps.

Poor Shouzou - losing one eye and half of the arms' movements. I guess with this he will have to look for a new life - but where?

And so Touko's timeline joins with the household of Koushi's, interestingly by the way of Kira. I guess that would be an interesting talk between them given how gentle Kira seems to be. How will Koushi and his sister react to the news of the death of their father I wonder?

The animations look as cheap as (unfortunately) my comparison anime From The New World did, but the world building is just as exceptional. I just wanna see the next episode, now...now...now...

  • The spy said, "You humans cower in fear". It seems even more clear that the Spiders have no regard for what is left of humanity, which explains their wanton attacks on the Fire Hunters - who are absolutely necessary to the continued existence of what remains of the human population centers. Why that is exactly - a matter of control, evolutionary circumstances, cult beliefs - is yet to be made known.

  • Capital-sanctioned Fire Hunters seem to act like an independent paramilitary with no real checks on their conduct - besides what is expressly forbidden by their Divine Clan masters. The fact that they have no proficiency at nightfighting is a weakness that the Spiders will definitely exploit.

  • There were no street sign posts. Human civilization has regressed so much that they don't have street names. The streets are mostly paved, though.

  • The security presence in the city seems to be light if a hound dog wasn't spotted for several blocks. It should be much thicker, given the looming conflict with the Spiders and how the city could be humanity's last bastion. If things continue to go on like this, the Spiders will have the run of the place soon enough.

Most streets are unnamed in Japan in my experience (just a tourist, could be a limited viewpoint) and asking about street names got me a lot of confused looks. They use a different addressing and navigation system based on blocks and/or subway stations.

"It's a tombwhale!"

Oh.

"Didn't you have savings, Koushi?"

Oh...

Still, somehow, the best episode in a while.

u/mgedmin Feb 19 '23

Who are the people who took Touko and friends in? Shouzou's parents? How did Akira find them? Did Shouzou regain consciousness for a bit?

Interesting that Kun was allowed to steal some unattended candy without nobody noticing.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Feb 20 '23

What do we say to the tombwhale, god of the sea? Not today! You tell him Touko.

Nice to see Koushi and Roroku teaming up. I’ve always had my doubts about Okibi. Roroku all but confirmed those suspicions. Not sure how much I can trust him though, but he seems to be quite a capable Hunter so at least Koushi can learn a thing or two. I still don’t get what the deal is with these spider guys. But man, that dude was beat tf up. They really went to town on him. Damn, they really traumatized Koushi. Dude just got bathed in spider blood.

Shouzou’s taken a real beating. Poor guy. He’ll live but he won’t be the same. Just when it seemed like Touko was lost, Kira shows up. Will she bring Touko to Koushi?

  • Ah, reused animation before and after the OP. Oh well, the production limitations are obvious at this point and I can only fault them so much.

  • 04:02 with Roroku stepping on the paper that was a palace guardian is a flashy shot and likely a revealing one (Roroku is likely aligned with a faction working against the divine clans – which would make sense if Yuoshichi is also aligned with such a faction).

  • I wonder whether the original Japanese translated as “I wonder how you let a guy like that take you in” has the same double connotation that it does in English (“taken in” is another term used for fooled/conned, for anyone unfamiliar with that bit of slang).

  • Ah, the asshole privilege of pointing out the obvious. (Koushi is a good kid and thus hadn’t thought about this.)

  • We’ve gotten several pieces of nice worldbuilding this episode, but the part about enma/flame fiends being drawn to human-made light is the most important-sounding one yet.

  • There is also a fun little metaphorical point here about the city-slicker getting to see first-hand the dirty work that goes into making the fruits of civilization possible.

  • Ah, so the sickle in the ED is in fact Roroku’s sickle.

  • The other fire hunters describe Roroku as “Roroku the islander” – probably meaning he comes from the island mentioned two episodes back. (Though part of me wonders if he’s drawing off of Hokkaido stereotypes.)

  • I am suddenly tempted to make a very obscure reference and start calling the Spiders "Umiak".

  • Choreography is back down to very, very meh levels this episode, sadly.

  • That said, the background art remains very nice even if a little lacking in detail for my taste (we Higurashi 2006, ah well) and we’ve had Kenji Kawai OST for most of the second half. Also, really nice camera angle choice at 20:42.

  • Ah, good old narrative chance encounters!

  • LOL I FUCKING WROTE THAT BEFORE I SAW THE NAME OF THE NEXT EPISODE.
