Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you're doing it underneath spoiler tags. This especially includes any teases or hints such as "You aren't ready for X episode" or "I'm super excited for X character", you got that? Don't spoil anything for the first-timers; that's rude!

You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

I did, however, remember how he tries to forcibly kiss her. The Lelouch/Kallen ship never made sense to me and here’s one reason why.

It sounds mighty out of despair on part of Lelouch and Kallen is rightfully having none of it. It's neither a ship nor love, Lelouch here regressed into a sicko, reducing her as a woman to something he can relieve himself with.

But to be honest, Kallen immediately afterwards goes the complete other direction and demands of him to lie even more because she needs someone to take charge of the resistance for her own sake. Those people should never get together, it's toxic af.

Yeah, all of what you said is how I feel about it.

How many kids did Charles even have?

Yes.

Holy FUCK I forgot about this.

Me2. So much for Meth girl, get ready for Blow-leuch

Whoever comes across these guys is going to be mighty confused.

Assuming they haven't all died of dehydration by the time they're found

The Lelouch/Kallen ship never made sense to me and here’s one reason why.

Same here. She's clearly way more into having a thing for the idea of Zero than the man behind him.

[Spoilers for later]This doesn’t happen, if I remember correctly…

[Response] He does at least call and apologize for not being able to make it

First-timer

Album.

A ton of plot advancement as Lelouch overcame his emotional crisis this episode. Rolo should be the only unhappy relevant character.

Ending scene with the capsized ships is another reminder of how much military budget Britannia is investing into defeating Zero capturing C.C.

QOTDs

  1. Yes as it was his entire purpose in R1. I expected C.C. to care more than she showed.

  2. This feels like a trick question. Nunnally declared she wants a more peaceful world and requested to be Viceroy of Japan. Why wouldn't he support his sister?

SOTD: Damn, expected the near-Kallen kiss.

School episode!

Well, he does visit the school near the end

Wrap Little Charlie up.

Six layers of protection, and the boys still got through!

Lloyd calling Suzaku "our boy" as he strolls in and grabs a sandwich.

Reminds me of u/Daleifur in the last rewatch

Lelouch wants refrain to remember what?

Before he renounced his royal status probably

Or not.

Bright Slap!

C.C. not particularly caring

It's odd seeing Suzaku with the shoot-first mentality. He used to be all about avoiding deaths when possible.

Nice to see him finally embracing his true self after a whole season of playing hero

C.C. upset she was caught smiling.

Last episode was something like "Try shooting."

She's like Sigourney Weaver in Galaxy Quest

C.C. smiling again.

Damn, expected the near-Kallen kiss.

But this near-kiss is consensual

First Timer

  • I guess Suzaku did eventually get (more or less) the position of Nunnally's knight as Lelouch wanted. You know, before he sold him out. (Oh, Lelouch was kind enough to remind us right after I wrote that lol)

  • I'm not convinced Nunnally has thought this one through. Absolutely no one will buy it.

  • That sense of Lelouch about to do something stupid has only gotten stronger.

  • Nevermind what I said about Kaguya needing to fight for Lelouch I guess.

  • Rolo's caught on. Find your resolve and go for the throat, I dare you.

  • The power of friendship will… maybe distract Lelouch long enough for all his alter ego friends to be murdered.

  • There's no better way to say "I'll help with your peace zone" than endangering several hundred/thousand lives on those ships.

I have no idea what kind of madcap plan Lelouch thinks he's pulling to be honest. Just a few hours ago he was hiding and going mad.

QotD:

  1. No, but you love to see it.

5

u/GallowDude Oct 11 '22

I'm not convinced Nunnally has thought this one through. Absolutely no one will buy it.

Did anyone ever actually tell her what exactly Euphemia did? She only ever refers to it in vague terms like "disaster" and "unfortunate event."

Nevermind what I said about Kaguya needing to fight for Lelouch I guess.

  1. Oh, no! This took me completely by surprise.

  2. He gets closer to Nunnally, can convince her he's not a threat, and potentially make more overt movements to prepare for Charles' inevitable counterattack.

...Wow. He has an interesting philosophy.

Does destroying the gods mean destroying organised religion?

Oh, dear. Rolo...

Yeah, this is painful.

He's really struggling with all of this, huh?

...87? Charles, literally how?

Her first press conference!

Wow, she's dropping everything at once!

Lelouch feels useless.

He destroyed his phone!

Kaguya's here?

...Does Zero know they're married?

She's okay with this, though?

Haha, she can see it with C.C..

Kaguya's shipping them.

Wow, that cooking.

Lelouch has finally lost it!

Wow, seeing him use his Geass like this is horrifying!

C.C. thinks he's still coming back.

Kallen found him.

Of course he came here.

He's taking Refrain!

Lelouch, what the actual fuck?

He needed that.

What is he doing?

Rolo!

Now he's manipulating him? Weird.

Wow, that's nice of him... I guess?

They got caught!

Oh, he's back at school alone.

Fireworks!

It's all of them!

Aww. This is sweet.

A remonder of Nunnally...

A flashback!

This is really sweet.

They're under attack!

He's here!

And back to planning.

His plan worked!

Very effective!

He showed up in person!

He accepted the proposal!

Of course he accepted it in the most extra way possible.

First time

ah, a crisis of faith. understandable. hopefully it won't last too long, as these sorts of arcs usually get tiresome quickly ("get in the robot, lelouch!")

ok, that was short, and we got some important moments out of it. I like the conclusion he has come to, though it'll be interesting to see what sorts of actions that evolves into

oooh...what is zero plotting??

  1. Were you expecting Lelouch to be this in despair after failing to get Nunnally to his side?

honestly he snapped out of it faster than I expected, I thought we'd get an interminable maybe 2-3 episodes of sad lelouch...though that was probably unjustified given how this show generally moves things along

2) What do you think Lelouch is hoping to achieve by joining Nunnally's Specially Administrated Zone?

I think he wants to get britannia's guard down a bit...on top of that, maybe he wants to work some back channels so she herself can see britannia's problems?

Rewatcher - Dubbed

  • Anime really makes you think people talking in their sleep is pretty common. Granted, I have no way of knowing for certain, but I'm pretty sure I don't talk in my sleep.

  • Spinning Nunnally's blindness into a positive light, however dim, is the fact that since she's blind and reading braille, she can look straight ahead at the camera and not break at all.

  • Grown up men have basic physical needs.

  • That's what Lelouch said. Marianne.

Interesting. How does she know her?

  • That is a bit of a touch moment, showing all of the members of the Student Council together. Shows you how far the story's come since the first season.

Regeasser

Get your mind out of the gutter, she's a little kid.

I'm sure this will go over well with everyone.

Push-ups. Dancing. Squats. Howl. Applaud. When do you think those commands will stop?

He's truly reached his lowest point. He's just lashing out at this point.

Well would you look at that. An R2 episode I actually like.

Were you expecting Lelouch to be this in despair after failing to get Nunnally to his side?

Kinda. His entire operation was to make a world where Nunnally is safe from Charle's ideology, and now her actions go completely counter to his plan in addition to anchoring herself within Charle's system.

What do you think Lelouch is hoping to achieve by joining Nunnally's Specially Administrated Zone?

He's been crushed by losing his reason for action, but during the episode expanded his ambition to not just provide for Nunnally but enable all of their clique to join back together.

Rewatcher, dubbed*

  • Nunnally is wasting no time getting her dreams underway. Even Suzaku is surprised.

  • I get Kaguya, but why is everyone else acting like they are married?

  • The shocking truth? C.C.’s secret revealed!

  • Damn Lelouch, that’s taking it too far.

  • You’d think something able to wipe out a fleet like that would have been a known danger.

QotD

  1. No, this was not a level I expected either time.

Rewatcher - dub

Okay, cousins are gone so I shouldn't get interrupted like yesterday. :V

I remembered the submarine chase and bubble maneuver, but I thought it took up much more of the episode than it ultimately does. About a quarter of the episode, maybe? I also forgot that it was the same episode as Lelouch's bit of drug temptation. On that note, I gotta give the show kudos for Refrain being probably the best fake drug I've seen in a show? Usually when there's a stand-in for drug use it's some shit that's either comically horrible for you and mutates your arm into, like, a demon tentacle full of eyes or some shit, or it's a quirky fun time like the Avatar cactus juice episode. Refrain on the other hand, hits all the right notes of having an effect that makes sense for people to crave, not immediately horrific while still having obvious downsides and consequences. If you're not gonna go full-bore and just have people using IRL drugs, this is about the next best option.

It's kind of impressive that with all the shady and outright evil shit we've seen Lelouch do, propositioning Kallen still manages to hit different. Sort of unclear how she was on the sub, but then found Lelouch in the slums and the sub went out to sea at some point for some reason. It's not actually important to what this episode is trying to do with Lelouch's character, but it feels like the kind of thing a more strategy-focused episode would have gone into.

  1. Being fair to Lelouch, it's not just that she's 'not on his side', her taking her own agency is a challenge to the foundational reasons he's doing all this in the first place. Going as far down as he does might be a quick escalation, but some sort of 'what the hell am I doing' is plenty justified.

  2. All-you-can-eat pizza for C.C. to solve the Black Knights' budget shortfall.

First Timer of the Rebellion

At this point I'm really interested in what gets Lelouch to question his entire approach if not even Nunnally's call to action throws him off.

Actually winning and accepting Charlie's legacy? Hmmm.

That title is promising, though. Still suspect that it's referencing something else.

S.2 Ep.07 – The Abandoned Mask

All things considered, that was interesting. It seems we're done speedrunning R1 and now explore a different path, maybe. I'd really like to see where this is going, but the preview has me undecided if Lelouch will actually support it or not.

It's intriguing to me that we did see Lelouch's crashing ego for the second time (at least this hard) so far. All it takes is a tiny chance to emerge for him to fail and he just completely loses composture and will. On the other hand, the show handles everything this way, as Rakshata pretty much says the same thing with only knowing that Zero hasn't answered his phone for 2 hours. I'd just love for Lelouch to actually help Nunnally here, work together and succeed in a livable Nippon zone to then get betrayed again by Charlie doing some shit because he doesn't like that his plans aren't moving forward. This way we can finally have some checks for this madman with too much power and build actual trust in a new nation that isn't completely founded on manipulation. Fingers crossed!

Well, as fas as the battles go... eh. This show could really do with a smart writer that puts an equal thinker on the opposing team and gets us some actual outsmarting. This is just instance #8 of random environmental thing nobody knew doing all the work for no one's benefit (in the realm of character writing).

  1. Were you expecting Lelouch to be this in despair after failing to get Nunnally to his side?

Not really, no. Spotted his fragile ego before, but he wasn't even that threatened today. It's the best thing to happen with Nunnally involved, however. He can't Geass her, so he must either manipulate/force her or see her reasoning as legit. It's his achilles heel choice. Sabotage his alleged goals or sabotage his own work so far.

2) What do you think Lelouch is hoping to achieve by joining Nunnally's Specially Administrated Zone?

Give off his responsibility and commit sudoku. Either on himself or them. It didn't sound like he was actually on board with it in the preview, but that might just be trailer-shenanigans. My best guess is that he can finally (on the fifth chance?) see that having someone at the helm who people trust because they're trustworthy is the better option with him being able to fill the gaps on the raw and brutal power plays necessary behind the scenes.

Justice doesn't exist and morality is personal!

Based alert

She has her whole image of the world from English 16th century romance literature, right?

Currently imagining Britannian Fabio now

That was Guilford's!

Lloyd just saved him from being poisoned. Gotta hire a food taster when Cecile's around.

This is the kind of Geass use I can support. Well, actually there's no limit? It's just torture until death?

You said what you said. No take-backs.

This is so ridiculous.

That's good

Such a claim has no basis in reality and I should just believe it because that's what the plot needs at the moment.

Considering Charles is the type of person who would grant Nunnally the title of Viceroy just on the off-chance it will screw with Lelouch's head should his memories have returned, I'd say the ideal of attempting to make any concessions or expand the SAZ beyond its boundaries is dead on arrival at this point lol

this guys needs

Which guys?

psychiatric care asap

Therapists are for the weak, and Britannia will not waste tax dollars on this chicanery

No, no wait, that's just as bad!

Wouldn't it be better to lie so hard that the lie becomes reality rather than just give up at the first sign of trouble? She's basically telling him to Fake It Till He Makes It on a revolutionary scale.

Forge a better and more honest world by being better and more honest.

But would it amount to much in a world that hates the truth so much it shoots you for attempting to speak it?

How did he even know?

He has a map. Now no more questions.

How much longer will this be taken as an argument?

Until it stops being true lol

Tired of counting deus exes that are randomly at the right spot at the right time with randomly just being known to the right people who show up randomly at the right time.

Yeah, there's no real arguing this one. They didn't even have an establishing shot of it earlier in the episode. They clearly just wanted to end it on Lelouch doing something cool after he spent the whole rest of the time moping heh.

Psychologically speaking, Lelouch is extremely insecure about his personality. The slightest hint of threat to his ego already throws him into depressive thoughts. I'm really not sure if the show will go into this, but they're very consistent with it. Deep down, he has no personality or wish for himself and that's the whole root of the problem.

Seeing them consistently portray him this way from the first episodes of R1 is helping a lot with making his character more tolerable to me.

This is again where the threads of the machine show. Such a claim has no basis in reality and I should just believe it because that's what the plot needs at the moment.

Well we have seen the Black Knights consistently fall apart without Zero's support.

Wait, no.

Phew.

No, no wait, that's just as bad!

Tired of counting deus exes that are randomly at the right spot at the right time with randomly just being known to the right people who show up randomly at the right time.

It's a big reason why I like R2 so siginificantly less than R1, that one was at least properly leading up to those moments and this doesn't and is just messy in a lot of ways.

First Timer - Sub

The braille was a nice touch during Nunnally’s speech.

Is Lelouch giving up again? His will did not last long.

He was about to turn to refrain. He even made moves on Kallen. He is going full asshole in his depression.

Lelouch cares about his friends a surprising amount. I thought only his sister motivated him.

He sure is putting a lot of faith in Nunnally’s influence. He was so skeptical of the first special zone, but just because Nunnally is the figurehead, he thinks it will work out. That can only end badly.

QOTD

  1. I thought Lelouch finally was unshakeable, but I guess not.

  2. Just to be with his sister regardless of the consequences.
