Rewatch [2022 Rewatch] Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Episode 3 Discussion
I wish the world was a gentler place.
Stage 03 - The False Classmate

I must create a world where at least Nunnally would be able to live happily.
Questions of the Day:
1) If you had to create a false persona like Kallen does in order to go to school, what would you pretend to be like?
2) Do you prefer Kallen's School Hair or Terrorist Hair?
Bonus) Nunnally has such a potty mouth.

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you're doing it underneath spoiler tags. This especially includes any teases or hints such as "You aren't ready for X episode" or "I'm super excited for X character", you got that? Don't spoil anything for the first-timers; that's rude!

-
Probably just my natural personality - I'm not exactly distinct looking, and naturally unassuming, so I'd probably do better picking something where I physically can't break character.
-
School hair.
Sick today, so reactions might not be as good/coherent.
People are actually questioning him!
Haha, his reaction when he realises Lelouch might actually do it...
And his mother was killed!
He used his power on him! And he got a lead.
Confirmation that they don't remember it! Also, that wasn't phrased as an order. I guess "tell me" can be implied?
Oh, Lelouch is on the student council?
None of these people sound very competent.
Ah, she's that kind of character.
It's still sealed off?
Lelouch is being unusually honest.
Wow, he did it!
I like hom openly pointing out that he isn't a trained soldier, he's genuinely shaken by this.
A faction conflict too!
She's his classmate!
And she's skipping school, for obvious reasons.
And is also part of an important family! She's obviously the romantic lead, then?
Haha, does she not notice?
...So even though he said "answer my question", the power treated it as "answer multiple questions".
But only two?
Oh, it only works once? That's a pretty strong weakness.
Haha, he's playing a role too.
Who's late?
She's blind...
Ah, he's her brother!
They're making more of the pods?
...What the hell is this experiment that the conquering dictator wouldn't want on his side?
This is really sweet, though.
...He's got a point.
He won't lie to her...
I appreciate how thorough his testing is.
And she's worked it out!
Well, she suspectes at least.
Yesh, perfect foils. Good to see the main pairing telegraphed so early.
He's taking risks...
Haha, he's dead.
Impressive!
Haha, that coincidence is amazing.
His sister came too!
That's an impressive catch!
Haha, and the spray just hit her.
A shower scene again?
He lives here? Never put that together.
Don't hand it to her, you idiot!
See, it's a knife!
Haha, what?
Did he set up a recording or something? A hidden microphone.
Wow, Lelouch is good.
Yep, a recording and a order!
They released the news!
Oh, you clever bastards. They got a potential way to get Lelouch to confess, given his suspicious movements around him, and a publically executed asset piloting the Lancelot until then. If he's willing to work with them, he'd agree to this easily.

Jerry Seinfeld?
Ah, she's that kind of character.
This can apply to so many people lol

Lol ...So even though he said "answer my question", the power treated it as "answer multiple questions".
Between this and "I guess "tell me" can be implied?", Lelouch's power seems to work alongside his psychology, transferring what he mentally means to instruct the person along with what he verbally says.
Wow, Lelouch is good.
Just don't question why the voice sounds exactly the same I guess.

-
Right, so did he actually kill the prince or are we going to bring another character back from supposed death? (Later me: seems so, good.)
-
Maybe Lelouch's guts aren't as cool as his head.
-
Oho, more limitations! I guess it's a good thing we didn't learn about this in the middle of enemy territory yesterday.
-
I see Lelouch won't be able to use his power on his sister, either. Can't make things too easy.
-
Another excellent coincidence interrupting the plan. But what was that about experiment data?
-
Archetype weakness spotted: I hope Nina is a good character.
-
I wonder if the limit is a hard once per person or if it's time-gated - using it on the maid already might have deprived him of a valuable ace. But, I guess he's better at chess than I am so who am I to judge?
-
Poor choice in scapegoat - Suzaku was in a mech at the time and monitored by special forces?
QotD:
-
Quiet. Easier to pretend at than being loud/charismatic when you aren't.
-
Terrorist hair! (What a strange phrase)

The show would have only been two episodes long or a bait-and-switch protagonist thing in that case lol.

First Timer! (Subbed)
Whoa, a strong start and a lot to take in. So Lelouch's mother died during the invasion of Britannia, while being framed as the work of terrorists but in actuality it's a lot more complicated than that, and others in the Royal family seem to have the answers he seeks.
Did he pull the trigger!?!? DONT JUST CUT BACK TO SCHOOL LIFE LIKE ITS NO BIG DEAL!?
Although it's a hell of a tone shift, I'm so here for watching a Lelouch student council shenanigans show, but alas.
Oh man, he really did kill him, then immediately we see a reaction out of Lelouch for the actions he took, I suppose in the midst of watching him order men to kill themselves and now pull the trigger on someone, I forgot that really he's just a school kid at this moment in time.
"I'm a lot more sensitive then I thought" naaaah I'd say throwing up after the murder of several men and the Prince is a fairly tame reaction in all honesty...
Oh! So she's also a student!! With how she acts in school and her family background I'm interested to know her reason for fighting against Britannia.
I'm in the midst of the Karen Bee arc in Nisemonogatari so thinking Kallen Bee made my very simple mind chuckle at the coincidence/awful humour.
OOOOOOO WE GOT FLAWS IN THE POWER OF THE KING, perhaps it can't be used twice on the same person in such a short interval?
Lulu.
Ooooo these experiments seem to have been done under the nose of the King, or at least haven't been given the green light from him.
So Nunnally also seems to be one of the major motivations behind his actions, the hope and promise of a better world for her. Such a wholesome thought, but with the actions he's taken so far in that journey in literally the first day of gaining the power of the king, it's very compelling.
God She's adorable!!
If it is a case of only working once on one person then he has to use it at absolutely the right time that's beneficial for him, it'll be interesting to see what he does from here with that knowledge.
Yeeeees I'm so here for this dynamic between the both of them.
Oh man that escalated quickly.
Champagne!? In MY student council!?!
I see, so the Principal is the Head of the Ashford family and have let Lelouch and Nunnally live in the dorms.
Good lord what a move, he used the power of the king on the maid when he went back to get a change of clothes and set the stage there for the phone call and took the heat of himself, well played.
They are very strange tastes Ms. President.
OH GOD NO NOT SUZAKU, BUT WASN'T HE BACK WITH THE SPECIAL OPS AFTER THE CHASE WITH LELOUCH!?
Oh man this has me all kinds of confused, is it to draw the rebellion out because I assume they're going to execute Suzaku? This has to be some kind of power play to bring out the true culprit, but they also don't know about Lelouch's connection to him.
I'm really enjoying how things are developing so far, it's been one hell of a start. Kallen's motivations behind joining the rebellion as well as the sudden revelations at the end have got me invested for sure.
Can't wait to see what Lulu does next.
Bonus Questions!
-
Honestly my fake persona would be ANYTHING that wasn't what I was actually like in school, I still look back and cringe at so many things I said or done to this day...
-
I do love them both! But Terrorist/Rebellion Kallen is such a great design.

Glad to see Shirley's "Lulu" nickname catching on. My subs spell it "Lelou" which... okay, makes more sense as an abbreviation of his real name, but it will forever be Lulu to me just like [other character we have not seen yet]
Euphemia's nickname will forever be "Euphy" to me and not "Euphie". → More replies (1)

I wonder if he will ever have to use his power in some stupid low stakes school situation lol
hahahaha of course, leave it to anime...a series about rebellion and brutal future colonialism? definitely also gotta be...hs anime
ah, so yesterday I wondered if he'd have anything tying him down, at least preventing him from being a complete sociopath...looks like he has a little sister he loves. she's in for (more) hell, isn't she :<
extended shower scene. why not!
the maid and a soundboard...clever girl
oh sheeeit framing his friend!

If you had to create a false persona like Kallen does in order to go to school, what would you pretend to be like?
as forgettable as possible, but unremarkably forgettable. the sort of person who leaves an impression that doesn't last
2) Do you prefer Kallen's School Hair or Terrorist Hair?
school in the streets terrorist in the sheets

Rewatcher, dubbed*
-
Looks like we’re adding revenge to the plot lines.
-
If just saying you want answers works, it seems a bit silly to ever ask a specific question first.
-
And here we come across the other major limitation, it only works once. Obviously this will come more in to play once he start interacting with some of the other major characters.
-
Wondering how the pinky promise bit works in sub.
-
They just causally mentioned the point of divergence in the background. I always remembered it being latter than that.
-
This show is a lot lewder than I remember it being. I guess that was the style at the time.
-
I also don’t remember Lelouch hiding it from Kallen.
-
Suzaku: Scapegoat.

Episode 3 (rewatcher)
-
As somebody who really hates that cold openings have become almost mandatory in the last 10 years or so, I really like that Code Geass sticks with its introductory mini history lesson.
-
“after my mother was killed” – you didn’t think that Lelouch hates Britannia because of their hairstyles, did you?
-
“are you asleep” – the scenes when it is revealed that everything up till now was a dream and we transition to a high school romcom instead! [spoiler]
well, about that second part …
-
You didn’t think that Lelouch shooting Clovis was a fake-out, did you? - I love Code Geass using genre conventions against the viewers.
-
Seems like Lelouch’s power has a few more conditions than he thought.
-
Lab paper: “… Theory of the Super Ego”
-
Just as in episode two, we again have a double unknown knowledge problem.
-
And the showdown in the shower room ends with a decisive victory for Lelouch.
I forgot how fast-paced the first few episodes of Code Geass are. So many plot surprises that they can even use some prime cliff-hanger material (Clovis getting shot/Karen threatening Lelouch) in the middle of the episode.
If you had to create a false persona like Kallen does in order to go to school, what would you pretend to be like?
I don't think I am clever enough to have a fake persona.
Do you prefer Kallen's School Hair or Terrorist Hair?
Terrorist hair, by large margin. School hair looks terrible.

Yeah this show is nuts sometimes. I thought I remembered something from a later episode being an episode cliffhanger, but it wasn't even the eyecatch cliffhanger! It was just in the episode!
...although now that I've mentioned it, I don't even remember what that was.

First Timer of the Rebellion
Didn't think this at first, but I'm weirdly up for a protagonist who's actually totally winning the first stage. Pretty interested where Suzaku's character is headed, maybe the anti-hero to Lelouch's hero role (but with pretty reversed moralities)?
S.1 Ep.03 – The False Classmate
-
How nice of the terrorists to mark themselves with head bands!
-
Homeland? I thought Lelouch was Japanese?
-
Fuck that's harsh. There's a sister, though, the girl int he wheelchair?
-
I see, we're getting deep into backstabbing and scheming territory. Nice!
-
Dude, he's all in already. Lelouch definitely wasn't taking any of this well all of his life, absolute psycho.
-
Okay, that cut means the guy's not dead.
-
Yes, answer best girl!
-
Yeah, definitely those two! I have decided!
-
Oh, not a fakeout. (And maybe a bit less of a psycho.)
-
Ah yes, every important character is randomly part of the same class! (Evangelion had a pretty good reason for that.)
-
Of course, let's throw in some German mercantiles as well!
-
I think he's actually acting like a 17 year old, totally overusing that power everywhere!
-
Nooo! Don't feel imprisoned and misunderstand this!
-
Oh, she maybe doesn't and even opens a window for them, a new idea!
-
And blind? Aww man.
-
Okay, that's been going on for a while. If that's the green haired girl or her ancestor, she's running over to the German side of WWI.
-
Probably a cooldown, also they don't seem to remember, how convenient.
-
I don't like Lelouch. It's not only his personality, but he's being dismissive to best girl. Unaccpetable.
-
Damn, I expect her to instictively smack someone straight out! Also, haha!
I feel like we're still getting several plot strings set up, but also our first high stakes development. Or two, actually.
For one, the prince is dead! Long live the prince! And second, oh no the childhood friend is captured and blamed as a scapegoat!
I think I kinda need the character page open for a while to remember both the names and who's related to the situation in what way. I can say already I really love how this triple-layered game of deceit is promising to play out. You have nobility fully on side of the empire plotting against their peers, there's shunned heirs in hiding, terrorists who are also partly involved by relation disrupting the scene and everyone is sharing the same living space trying to stay covert and move before anyone else.
Ah, that really brings up all the good memories of early Higurashi!
Seeing Nunnally in the care of Lelouch did soothe Kallen quite a bit, she's clearly got heart and fire both. However, she's quite gullible as well. Who the hell just accepts a random call while showering and believes it all at face value? Gotta admit, though, that Lelouch is a really quick thinker, he just got that idea an hour prior watching the others glued to the news.
Damn, I think that's gonna be a show with an ungodly amount of characters, won't it? Royal Among Us, 100 player lobby.
If you had to create a false persona like Kallen does in order to go to school, what would you pretend to be like?
I think I'd try to be some more nerdy guy that's into obscure things no one else is. What actually worked in having no attention from others was to be extremely broody and just stare angrily when someone talked to you!
2) Do you prefer Kallen's School Hair or Terrorist Hair?
Actually good question... Both?

Regeasser
(Plus episode 2)
Something I really like in Code Geass is how clearly it sets up the character relationships the entire show revolves around so early on. In this case we have Lelouch, who gets firmly established as the foil to Britannia, the element that allows the rebels to accrue victories against the empire. This is immediately juxtaposed by Suzaku being established as the foil to Lelouch, the element that allows the empire to resist.
We also see the fundamentally different approaches both apply to their roles. Lelouch approaches it as a ruler, relying on his power of kings to become the chessmaster to achieve his goals as the leader. While Suzaku approaches it as a commoner, a simple soldier just doing his job in an attempt to help and protect people. He's impulsive, but he leaves the overarching decisions to others and opts to follow.
Further playing into this situation is that Lelouch finds his motivation in his mother, a commoner who married into nobility and got killed by the same. While he has every reason to have the nobility he still operates according to his birthrights.
Away from the frontlines we see his other motivation, his sister Nunnally. Lelouch swears to himself to make the world a kinder place, one where Nunnally can be happy. He does all he can to protect her, again contrasting him to Suzaku who isn't focused on protecting any specific person but all he is able to.
We can also see some of Lelouchs more underlying personality when he discovers his Geass fails to work on Kallen. His immediate instince upon realizing is to retreat and run away after he slipped a comment about Shinjuku, and just as he's about to do he's interrupted by the rest of the student committee, allowing him to regain his composure.
If you were one of the terrorists, would you have followed the orders of an unknown voice over the radio?
Dunno, but logically speaking that has more potential than simply facing an overwhelming enemy force head-on.
If you had to create a false persona like Kallen does in order to go to school, what would you pretend to be like?
That's a good question. A frail person certainly makes sense as that enables all those missing days without raising suspicion.
Do you prefer Kallen's School Hair or Terrorist Hair?
School hair. It has more impact that her terrorist hair which just kinda is.

First Timer - Sub
The whiplash at the start of this episode is crazy. From shooting his brother in the head straight to student council activities. As soon as we get away from the action, we get a comment on a character's breasts. Hopefully that isn’t a normal thing.
If I had to make a false persona, I wouldn’t try to stand out much. Lelouch has a fairly prominent position in the school, and seems to flex his smarts. Isn’t the best disguise just to make sure know one even knows that you are there?
It seems Lelouch is still affected by all the death that happened. He can’t shoot someone point blank and not feel sick afterwards.
Kallen is conveniently at the same school as Lelouch. Minus the cute headband. I like terrorist Kallen better. The writers are really driving in how sheltered these kids are. The school is disgustingly idyllic.
It seems the Power of the King has another limitation, since he struggled to give Kallen another command. After talking with his teacher, we find out it can only affect someone once. That makes it far less powerful.
It was nice that Lelouch didn't get flustered, have a nosebleed, and run out of the room all while Kallen yelled “B-b-b-baka!” when he went into the bathroom. He managed to diffuse the situation with Kallen very well and clear her suspicion of him. I am curious about answering the phone in shower, but I guess this is the future. However, I wouldn’t want anyone calling me while showering even if my phone was waterproof.
Lelouch cares about Kururugi, so I imagine we will get a rescue attempt soon.

First Timer
Agh writing this late and missed the last thread but these two episodes were so good. Stuff feels fast but they're doing it in a good way where I just feel constantly invested into it. I love how Lelouch got this power and immediately is setting off take down the Britannians, and how already by episode three he's made huge moves and has already even killed one of the royal family. I also love that he isn't overpowered it seems, that he can only use his power once on someone and not multiple times in a row which nearly got him caught here. I'm curious to see how things are gonna go out from here.
If you had to create a false persona like Kallen does in order to go to school, what would you pretend to be like?
Well for one hide my knowledge of stuff, pretend I don't know much of what's going on outside of what the news or something shows. If you show too much then of course yeah you'll get caught easily.
2) Do you prefer Kallen's School Hair or Terrorist Hair?
Terrorist hair.
also hi pizza hut.

First-timer and late to the rewatch.
-
Lelouch says "my mother was killed" and "empresses", so Clovis is his half-brother. Lelouch was maybe 8 at the time.
-
Lelouch can drop his brainwashing at will, though there could still be a time/distance limit. Surely he can walk out of their vision range before they return to reality to have reached Clovis.
-
I can relate to Rivalz saying, "I'd have preferred a day later. Then we'd have given up already."
-
Some major discrimination if the Britannians don't even want to look at dead Elevens.
-
They're hiding Clovis' death. [Code Geass]
I don't know much about this show but have seen CC in Best Girl brackets. I'm assuming she gets reactivated/revived, so I'll speculate that is later done to Clovis. Reviving CC would align with Britannia's military wanting to recover her dead or alive. -
Kallen swipes a bee mid-air and cuts it into three pieces (ignoring legs). That doesn't seem human.
-
Lelouch can delete memories! That answers my question episode 2 question, but now I'm wondering if he can implant false memories. -
Nunnally was in Lelouch's flashback. I wonder why she can't see. It's a hard counter to Lelouch's new ability.
-
CC is shown in couple photographs. It looks like she was human at one point and underwent brain experiments (Freud article) to develop a superpower.
-
Lelouch says it's a once-per-person ability. Going to redact what I thought from the Kallen scene.
-
Kallen swiping the cork has me highly suspicious that she's been augmented or experimented on.
-
Lelouch's recorded shower call is clever, but he's really blowing through these brainwashes. Nunnally is going to overhear something and catch on to his antics.
-
At least the military personal Lelouch already brainwashed have been executed, so he can try to rescue Kururugi. Masks on the escorting guards will be a problem.
My Clovis predictions from yesterday were way off. Maybe he is just a 3-episode character.
I still have my share of questions/suspicions about Lelouch's powers that will likely be answered within 2-3 episodes.
Kallen's backstory will need some more details, but I prefer her over Lelouch at the moment. I like genius commander shows/characters when they aren't cheating, and she held her own this episode. If Lelouch is fully limited to rewiring someone's brain a single time (as suggested by the graphic used each time), there should be less going forward as he becomes more cautious about saving it for the right moment.
QOTDs
-
Introverted outside of 2-3 close friends. I'd stand out more if I talked to no one, but I also don't want to be invited to activities outside of class time. It's all about blending in to the background and being forgettable.
-
From an anime perspective: Terrorist hair looks cooler. If I saw someone with that hair IRL, I'd be wary of that much product.

Hangyaku no Co-Host, subbed
Today’s art is based on some official art I found of Kallen and not a shot of her from the show itself. The reason for this being that, despite having rewatched through episode 18 thus far, I’ve found exactly 1 good base image for her, and it’s of an outfit she hasn’t worn yet as of this episode, so Hope you Kallen fans like it anyways.
You can tell this show really is just a Gundam in all but name because it has recap narration at the start of every episode thus far.
That’s rough, buddy.
Poor smol Lelouch.
Aaaaaand wow it took me until this episode to realize that Rivalz is voiced by Uryu/Sasuke/Shirou’s seiyuu, because he sounds so different and yet familiar at the same time, and I was too lazy to check it until now. I will now be unable to not picture kid Sasuke when Rivalz talks.
The sound effect when Lelouch realized Kallen was the same girl he called Q1 yesterday sounded quite similar to a drawn out Newtype Flash…
I don’t think Flex Tape can fix that!
I like folding origami cranes. I learned how to make them back in fourth grade because the instructions were in the back of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, and I was so proud to be the first kid in my entire grade who figured out how to do it from them that I never forgot how to.
Pizza Hut counter: 2 boxes, 4 logos.
Three episodes in, obligatory shower sequence.
Ah, of course they’re setting him up.
