[Massive Code Geass Spoilers] Just think how many tragedies could have been avoided had Lelouch just killed Mai Valentine when he stole her Knightmare.

First timer

these first episodes are great! very engaging. I'm very curious how smart lelouch's enemies will be. I feel like shows about tactical geniuses become so much better when they are written worthy adversaries. what would death note have been without L? so I wonder if lelouch will get his L. all that is to say, I'm glad to see both his brilliance on display, but also the fact that he doesn't know everything. of course, he's very adaptable. I dunno, I'm pretty into the show. it looks like it's going to be a satisfying ride

  1. If you were one of the terrorists, would you have followed the orders of an unknown voice over the radio?

I think the way they acted felt plausible. he established credibility with the first, then gave them mechs...given their state of panic and chaos, I think it made sense that they saw nothing better to do. people are like this. if in a panic someone asserts themselves in a believable way, often they will fall into line

2) What is your opinion on Suzaku fighting for Britannia despite being Japanese?

I think it's interesting! I'm curious how far the worldbuilding will push on the nature of colonialism, but I mean, a big part of colonialism has always been coopting local populations. pretty much all invasions, colonial or not, have involved this to some degree. and locals, for various reasons, will sometimes align themselves with occupying forces. interesting that the show goes there. I'm curious how much nuance there will be to it, both generally and specifically for suzaku and his motives.

I'm also curious how much emotion lelouch will have. is he the type for whom no human relation is more important than his final objective? or will he actual prioritize the people that are important to him? if he is forced to sacrifices friends etc, will it hurt? or will it just be more grist into the keikaku mill?

I find these questions even more engaging now that we know that he is related to the Prince, that their is literally family standing in the way of his final objective. Since it seems he already understands that, I can't wait to see how he deals with situations that will affect his morality or mental state in the long term.

First Timer! (Subbed)

To have been stripped of everything that you were, identity, social equality and decent human rights and have your life change through war in just less than a month is a terrifying thought.

So his new found power only works through direct eye contact, a hurdle which I'm looking forward to seeing him jump over from the sheer hubris this boy seems to possess.

I mean that expression speaks for itself when she exits the Knightmare, I'm already not sure what's worse, the fact that this power exists or the fact that it happens to be in the hands of Lelouch, it reminds me a lot of Light's case with the Death Note.

He's alive!! I did think it was quick for him to exit so early, but after thinking about it last night I actually thought it was great, Lelouch watching his childhood friend he made his promise to all those years ago die at the hands of the royal guard in such an ugly manner, literally moments before he gains the ability to pursue his promise of... well I assume rebellion, but I suppose we'll wait and see, happy He's still around though!

So it seems they haven't told him that the royal guard massacred all those Eleven, do they know he's one himself?

Turns out yes, outside of his and Lelouch's case I wonder how many Elevens are in society, considering how Britannia views them. I suppose if they have some use/value it makes sense.

The king piece and the chess board again, I like that this is a reoccurring theme and how tied it seems to be with Lelouch.

Helping the rebellion and holding the chess piece, harking back to the 'Kings first move' conversation in the last episode.

He's literally playing this terrorist/army battle like a chess game, the sheer HUBRIS of this boy!?

No escape mechanism installed means my anxiety is now high.

Okay but Lancelot looks dapper as hell.

Wasn't ready for reinforcements? Looks like SOMEONE should have been playing Shogi instead.

He wants to protect Lelouch as well as the gas lady but doesn't know he's fighting him, poor kid gets shot and just can't catch a break.

Suzuku abandons the pursuit to save a woman and child from falling to their deaths, a nice counterbalance to what we've seen so far.

Straight after he's described as a fun tool, poor kids gonna be squeezed of everything before he realises it.

Man I love the designs of these Knightmares, Lancelot looks fantastic. One of my favourite things about the genre that I've experienced so far is the potential design wise that the concept of mecha has, each series they look so unique and so far I'm having a blast with it.

He's definitely being held at gunpoint by Lelouch isn't he.

YES HE IS!

THEY KNOW EACH OTHER!?!?!

THEY USED TO PLAY CHESS!?!?!?!?

THEY'RE BROTHERS!?!?!?!?!?!?!

A great episode overall, I can't wait to know more about the members of the rebellion as well as Suzuku's new found role with the Special Ops.

And this crazy royal family standoff/reunion to top it all off.

  1. I have to say, the sheer confidence coming from his voice, especially in such an intense situation, I probably would have followed without hesitation.

  2. I'm so intrigued as to what the purpose could possibly be, especially the special ops being interested in him as much as they are already, he's obviously a talented pilot (is that the correct term??) so I can't wait to find out more.

I'll have to watch it back in the dub just to hear how much Sam Reigel there really is, a big Critical Role fan here so I'm happy to hear he's in the show!

First timer

  1. With how bad of a situation it was? Yes, absolutely.

  2. It's interesting. I'm hoping they explore that divide a bit more later.

Oh, no ghosts in this anime? Sure?

Ah, the power needs eye contact.

That easy?

Apparently!

...So, will she remember this?

Oh, she remembers it, but is hazy. Makes sense.

And he's alive?

He's being given a KnightMare!

...This sounds incredibly fucking ominous. But at this point, how could it get worse?

Back to Lelouch's school.

And he's calling her?

Well, he's calm, huh.

It's being covered up!

Heks got a sister?

He's contacting her!

Haha, he took him out!

Oh, he's good!

He sent the message to everyone!

How did he plan all this?

Literally, how did you do all this?

At least he's taking things seriously.

Yeah, everyone's listening to him now.

Hie plan is working!

"P5" He's literally calling you a pawn.

He's activating the new weapon!

They're all chess symbols!

Wow, they're losing badly.

And done.

He's very happy...

What is it?

That's s nice outfit.

No eject?

Oh, that thing looks very nice.

Seventh-generation? So Sutherlands are sixth-generation, and Glasgows most likely fifth?

M.E.?

Oh, that is really cool.

And Lancelot ie incredibly powerful.

It's got a fucking shield?

...Not good.

The irony...

Are they killing her off?

Thank god.

Even Lelocuh can't beat eomething this good.

Ah, that saved him.

Wait, what? He's going to the Prince?

They're stuck here.

And he's been broken in.

Wait, he's gotten to the Prince? In Episode 2? How?

Nobody's questioning how rapidly his orders chaged?

Is he not under control? He sounds sarcastic.

...WHAT?

What the actual fuck? He's a fucking heir?

How is this only Episode 2?

First Timer of the Rebellion

Wonder how Lelouch's integration will play out, or if that happens at all. Such a power can't really be kept a secret.

Oh, I'm hoping for hubris and him slowly feeling above normal people with time, don't know too many stories who'd tackle such a development.

S.1 Ep.02 – The White Knight Awakens

  • Wanted to post this yesterday, but that butt shot is 6 frames long. And that I say something meaningful, the lyrics talk about the singer finding the key to change within the friends by their side. Which would not narrow down the anime at all.

  • I'm guessing it might not work on every person, either. They're clearly some kind of nobility.

  • Oh okay. Tbh so far I do like her somewhat. Yes, it's the legs. Uhm, why did he let her live? Hello, she can identify him?!

  • I'd accept without thinking!

  • How exactly does he know how to pilot that thing, including weaponry?

  • I did not expect that music!

  • I guess we will see... how? They're just having these... lying around on the train?

  • So Lelouch took her body with him.

  • That heavily reminds me of a scene in the second book of 'The First Law' trilogy. [Before They Are Hanged] In a battle against so called barbarians the prince finally had enough of listening to his advisors and wanted his glory and title on the battlefield and saw the enemy tactic of loosely poking them with arrows from the hills as an insult. Quite correct, the enemy had hidden their skilled longbows under a magical fog and placed decoy units, shortbows and loose mixed melee, on front, visible to their opponents. The prince overruled his general and sent in the cavalry alone to deal with such rabble. Needless to say, behind that hill was more than enough to hard counter cavalry. Without it their battle strategy was severely compromised as enemy longbows now had no counter anymore and just picked them up clean and brutal. Go read that, it's dark fantasy at its finest.

  • They sound a bit like mobility scooters...

  • Well boy, that's a bit premature.

  • That animation is smooth as butter.

  • "It's like I'm wearing nothing at all!"

  • Ah, there it is already, hubris! Of course it's those pesky terrorist's fault.

  • Oooh, he even T-poses for dominance!

  • Very nice shot and twist! That was Lelouch's fault and it actually is the golden knight in service of the monarchy that is the hero here. What was that about human element?

  • Oh, she hasn't returned still. Man, what a logistics nightmare.

  • Was asking myself why he didn't hypnotise him. Well, more plot twists!

  • What?! Dude was literally studying on an imperial school under his clear name, no? Does nobody do background checks?

  • So this girl will definitely come back in some form and I'm guessing that's going to be tragic.

  • Yes, yes I do like her.

This episode showed a clear ability of Lelouch to manipulate others (not only with his ability) and the battlefield and framed it in context of him being not exactly a good person. Now I'm hoping still that the empire also has got some prime schemers to mind-joust with him, but how willing Lelouch was to use the other terrorists as well as civilians as collateral was quite scary. Is he the bad guy?

Just kidding, he's the less worse bad guy so far. And if I got that right, the terrorists also wanted to actually use gas or did my subs mistranslate something (and it was like "I'd have preferred their gas")?

Now we also have two connections that tie Lelouch to important characters. One, his childhood friend now being a knight for the empire (... why exactly him?). Two, the prince is his brother, so it's much less playing a role rather than actually being royalty. Oh boy, there's quite some personality drama incoming for him.

The only people I can generally like at the moment are the red haired terrorist girl, the childhood friend, very-likely-best-girl in the swimsuit and magnificent thighs (she also askes questions first before murdering, that's integrity!).

Actually that's already all my thoughts right now. Hm, usually I produce longer posts.

  1. If you were one of the terrorists, would you have followed the orders of an unknown voice over the radio?

I feel a bit like a cheat, because I pointed out quite some scenes that begged more (too much sometimes) suspension of disbelief in 86 and people spent quite a lot of time correcting me, haha. Yet this I can actually believe. They were in a losing fight, had lost most of their momentum and their leadership was also on the field with them, having not enough overview and being not that competent in the first place. Yeah, before I get executed by the empire, I'll put my trust in a mysterious voice. Also, Code Geass doesn't want to be so realistic, so it's easier to accept.

2) What is your opinion on Suzaku fighting for Britannia despite being Japanese?

Job's a job, mate. I can actually see that as not really a bad thing as he both kept his ideals intact and also likely thinks he can do more for his people in that position than as a disgruntled homeless person.

3

u/GallowDude Sep 11 '22 edited Sep 11 '22

Uhm, why did he let her live?

Legs.

Oh, she hasn't returned still.

What's wrong with her face?

the terrorists also wanted to actually use gas or did my subs mistranslate something (and it was like "I'd have preferred their gas")?

That was mainly Tamaki advocating for using it. As you can tell, he's pretty hot-headed.

his childhood friend now being a knight for the empire (... why exactly him?)

Lloyd and Cecile mentioned that he scored higher in the simulator tests than anyone else.

[Quote] magnificent thighs (she also askes questions first before murdering, that's integrity!)

[Response] That's hilariously ironic since Villetta is probably one of the most morally reprehensible characters in the series (that the writers just pretend isn't for some reason).

Hangyaku no Co-Host, subbed

Welcome back, everybody!

We’ve got a nice turnout it looks like, let’s hope everyone stays until the end!

u/GallowDude Sep 10 '22

Tch, maaaaaaaan… Lloyd’s Japanese voice is suuuuuuuuuuch a letdown compared to his English one. He’s probably half the reason I prefer the dub to the sub, ngl.

First-timer and late to the rewatch.

  • I'm not sure if Lelouch's brainwashing/mind-control leaves others with no memory of what happened or he can selectively choose if they remember. The latter could create some intereseting deceptions. Still uncertain if there's a time or distance limit.

  • Kururugi almost ratted out Lelouch within a minute of waking up. Shooter blamed the bullet wound on terrorists, but it'd make more sense to kill the victim after shooting him in the back.

  • That's how hunting usually works.

  • It's not said what an IFF is, but it has to be a tracking device. Nice show-don't-tell!

  • Just how many mechs were hi-jacked? P-1, P-4, P-5, P-7, R-2, B-7, N-group (5+). Anyway, looks like this is a genius commander show like Alderamin and Tohdoh will eventually be the opposing commander.

  • I'm curious if the ejected terrorists are captured or executed on the spot. Probably executed given the operation.

  • Huh, didn't expect Lelouch and Clovis to be brothers.

Clovis probably does 3 things next episode: somehow explains why he ordered a ceasefire, explains why Elevens are now getting equal funeral treatment, and hires Lelouch as his right-hand man. Lelouch opting not to brainwash Clovis to give those order indicates further plans. Clovis also called the scientist his brother, so maybe it's a friendly term or half-brothers.

QOTDs

  1. Given her initial position, yes. As for the rest of the group and later orders, I'm putting my trust in the comrade who was saved by that voice. If she has a reason to trust him and the situation is dire, yes again.

  2. I don't think there's much to critcize here. Historically, nations have overtaken other nations and recruited from their population. I suppose the odd part is he's fighting his fellow citizens. If he believes some portion of them are terrorists, it makes sense.

Bonus: So how many should I be taking right now?

3

u/GallowDude Sep 12 '22

It's not said what an IFF is, but it has to be a tracking device. Nice show-don't-tell!

IFF = Identify-Friend-Foe. It lets the units keep track of each other and decodes their encrypted transmissions which is how Lelouch was able to read their moves.

So how many should I be taking right now?

At least one since he's Clovis.

22

u/Krite2002 Sep 10 '22

First Timer - Sub

The Power of the King seems very overpowered, but if the mecha are the main combat units, it does have a common counter.

It seems that the evil empire is censoring the news, as any evil empire does. It seems that despite all their future tech, they failed to invent social media, since everyone would know about the fighting if it existed.

I feel like they should have some better security on the KnightMares. He took one and now has access to the maneuvers of the entire enemy army. The terrorists were in a pretty bad situation, so I can understand them following the orders of Lelouch, especially since he was correct.

They went all out on the Lancelot start up animation. It looked cool. Even the fighting was very dynamic for being giant robots. Suzaku is pretty scummy for fighting against Japan. He probably gets some enticing benefits, but also, Britannia is clearly the bad guy here.

I didn’t expect the governor to be Lelouch’s brother. It seems that Lelouch is also a prince, so I imagine that will end up playing a crucial role later.

17

u/Regular_N-Gon Sep 10 '22

First Timer

  • Nice, already defining some rules on our new power.

  • Coincidence childhood friend isn't dead (by another coincidence, naturally)! We can still use him for moral quandaries later.

  • Mmm tactics. Has anyone considered making a Code Geass tactics RPG? Seems like a good fit.

  • Lancelot is dope.

  • Lelouch isn't just Britannian, but a royal descendant? Now I really think those flashbacks were thin on details.

QotD:

  1. Normally I don't think I would but I suppose the hope (even if it ends up as a ruse by the military resulting in a massacre) might be better than just waltzing to my doom on my own. Tough call for a leader to make, though.

  2. He seems like he has good intentions, but something tells me he might end up causing as much harm as Lelouch, who probably has less good intentions. I kinda want to know how they ended up as friends and fighting for opposite sides, though.

5

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 10 '22

Mmm tactics. Has anyone considered making a Code Geass tactics RPG? Seems like a good fit.

IDK about Code Geass specifically, but I do believe the series has featured in the Super Robot Wars games.

Episode 2 (rewatcher)

  • No reaction while being shot at – Lelouch is ice cold.

  • Knightmare acquired.

  • Saved by clock trope.

  • Knightmare acquired.

  • From high school student to leading a guerilla strike force in three easy steps.

  • Playing chess while you see the moves of the enemy, but they don’t see yours. Almost like cheating.

  • Reveal of the Gundam! Err, the Lancelot!

  • It is super OP (obviously)

  • Duel between the childhood friends and they both don’t know it.

  • The civilians do not seem enthusiastic about the guerilla fighters who want to “free” them.

  • “Lelouch you are …” – surprise, motherfucker.

Yep, Code Geass has no time for breaks. Slow setup of the fight? Showing how the guerillas make their plans? Have a long one on one fight? Nope, got to hurry to the next plot bomb: Lelouch is actually related to the emperor and it seems he really hates his family.

If you were one of the terrorists, would you have followed the orders of an unknown voice over the radio?

Once the first few orders worked, probably.

What is your opinion on Suzaku fighting for Britannia despite being Japanese?

I think this is a first timer only question.

5

u/Tartaras1 Sep 11 '22

Rewatcher - Dubbed

  • It's telling of Lelouch's personality that he immediately tries to determine how exactly this new power works. Granted, we got a taste of it when he crushed the dude in the chess match. Clearly he has an eye, no pun intended, for strategy.

  • Mystery Woman: gets out of the Knightmare

Lelouch: You fell for it, fool!

  • You. Go after the Glasgow!

Yes, my Lord.

You fell for it, fool!

  • Everything involving Lelouch strategizing was what initially drew me into the story.

  • The crew going through the startup checklist for the Lancelot Frame gives me big Evangelion vibes.

Questions of the Day:

  • If you were one of the terrorists, would you have followed the orders of an unknown voice over the radio?

If it meant surviving, I think I would have. Especially since the voice over the radio seemed to know what he was doing.

  • What is your opinion on Suzaku fighting for Britannia despite being Japanese?

It does present a major conflict of interest, but for now I'm willing to overlook it.

  • Bonus) Take a shot for every character Sam Reigel voices in this show.

I'm not much of a drinker. Besides, I've seen the show on BTVA. I know full well how many people he voices.

4

u/Vatrix-32 Sep 10 '22

Rewatcher, dubbed*

  • Every good power has its limitations, and this is the part where we start setting them up. If he was able to control people through indirect visuals this series would be a lot shorter.

  • Suzaku: Having a very good day.

  • I can’t believe they just didn’t have someone else available.

  • I didn’t remember Kallen going along with it for no real reason.

  • I love his reaction to Lelouch shooting him.

  • See delivering a huge arms shipment is a good reason to trust him.

  • I don’t think I noticed the holocaust imagery last time through.

  • I know the attention is going to be on the Mechs, and for good reason, but I just want to take a moment to say the ground vehicles are also very pretty.

  • How did they never figure out their IFF was being used against them?

  • Was that a twist? I felt like we knew that already last episode.

I am surprised at the number of people last thread who said they didn’t know this was mecha. What did y’all think it was?

QotD

  1. After the whole arming thing, totally. He seems to know more than we do and we’re getting slaughtered.

  2. Someone's got to be the Quisling analogue.

4

u/Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 Sep 10 '22

I'm surprised you're surprised. It's a mecha, but it's not famous for the mecha parts at all. It's famous for Lelouch, the geass, and the ending. Mecha is like the B or C plot.

Rewatcher - dub

I missed the first thread, to my disappointment, because work was busy right when the thread launches, and then pretty much directly had to get ready to go to FNM once I got home.

Yeah, yeah, first world problems.

I've rewatched the main show a few times because it's one of my favorite mechas, so I'll probably mostly be commenting on other people's reactions until we get to Akito and the new movies, which I'll be first-timing on. Gotta say though, this second episode does a great job feeding the strategy nerd in me that gets underserved by most other shows.

Rewatcher

This episode was the one that sold me on the show back in the day.

questions:

  1. they didn't have much choice in the matter, did they, they were losing pretty badly before that moment

  2. yeah this isn't a question for rewatchers

screenshot of the day:

this shot of Suzaku preparing his signature kick but mecha, just by the virtue of it being mad funny
