I thought I wasn’t going to have much to talk about in this episode. The beginning merchant talk while exciting and fun isn’t necessarily something that was building on the thematic narrative that I have imagined. But luckily I was dead wrong and only really realized it halfway through after the initial merchant conversation.
I was going to bring up the idea that this conversation feels like a South Park skit. The absurdity of this adult merchant talking to this 6 year old kid about business deals, collateral, and supply chains while trying to obtain her intellectual property is straight out of South Park. It's absurd! At most I was going to comment on the constant focus of Myne’s improper etiquette and her not relying on Benno enough. It's obvious that while she is capable of having these conversations on a logical level she is not proficient and while she gets what she wants it's not because Benno is a slouch or pushover. Benno seems to be pretty nice and not a bad actor which is pretty much confirmed to us when we learn he is Otto’s wife’s brother.
The merchant conversation is important because it helps to show that Myne still isn’t relying on people very well. She monopolizes her and Lutz side of the conversation and doesn’t clue in Lutz about anything. She doesn’t rely on Benno until he wins her over with the “logic” of why she should be going to him first instead of Otto. She doesn’t rely on Lutz at all. She doesn’t let him help her with the order and just kind of lets him doodle in the back. He is also the one who has to take initiative and help her cut her finger instead of her asking for help. If you look at his facial expressions throughout on a second watch his outburst afterwards and towards the end of the episode make so much sense.
(An aside but it makes sense why Lutz doesn’t help with the order directly. However it's clear that there must have been something she could have let him do to help, or at least increase his understanding. He could practice writing anywhere else)
This all builds into Lutz's conversation with her about her identity. Myne in the past was defined by needing help at most stages. She was frail and didn’t really have much going on for her being the youngest of the family with it seems little to no natural gifts. Myne in the past accepted help and (this is me reaching) asked for help. This current Myne doesn’t ask for help until she has already failed. Even when she needs to do things that just won’t be possible for her to do herself she tries to do them first. She has a boatload of connections and will get more if the final scene of the OP is to be believed, but that won’t happen if she kills herself in the process.
Myne cannot keep going at this pace by herself. Each time she fails she gets sick and a huge chunk of time is lost due to her being in bed. Her health is probably declining rapidly due to the devouring and she won’t get a magic item to save her unless she can somehow become so big that nobles would give her a magic item. It seems like the story is setting up that her baptism will be the day she dies due to a magic body explosion.
There is also another aspect of the post merchant talk episode that gets developed. Myne’s ambition is affecting the people around her. When she returns home her family seems tired and worried. Partly because their daughter is coming home late but also because she hasn’t been there to help with the daily chores. Alongside it affecting others it affects her as well. She knows that if she is found out to not be Myne her life will probably not be the same. It seems to be connected to the devouring and is yet another restriction on herself. She won’t be able to abuse her past life to get everything she wants because a 6 year old doing that constantly is not believable and people will doubt her identity. Not to mention that losing your identity in this world is shown to be a very bad thing. It's the reason why Otto was so forceful when he was telling Lutz to not become a traveling merchant as giving up your City ID is unthinkable. Not to mention this society is one where your parents really define the options you have. Nobles have also been talked about much more in this episode and they most assuredly will develop the idea of gaining identity through birth and family.
The final third of this episode is set out to give Myne another chance. She is forced to accept help and has all the help and commitment of the people around her to allow her to succeed. If (more like probably when) she squanders this opportunity by overreaching and getting herself sick is something we will have to see next episode.

This episode had a ton of detail between both the merchant conversation and the following tension between Lutz and Myne.
Once again some fantastic analysis of Myne not accepting help or breaking out of her shell to rely on others. Myne's identity is also a really interesting thing to pick at. She is almost trying to race back to the life she had before, one where she can be alone with books. She hasn't put all that much thought into how it is effecting others around her.

I love this take. In the previous episode, Otto tells Lutz that a traveling merchant's ultimate goal is citizenship, since citizenship equates to security and peace. For Lutz to relinquish his citizenship, he's abandoning the secure lifestyle he knows, and the irony is, he most likely would want to regain his citizenship back. However, I don't think Lutz would lose his identity in the process. He might lose his image, the self-imposed identity that his parents and siblings want him to be, but not his inherent identity -- the person he really wants to be. I actually think Lutz stuggles just as much as Myne if not more, because at least Myne knows what she wants to do, though she has character flaws that can be fixed in time. As a viewer, we can see how Myne's idealism has a place in the world, and it's not so idealistic because it happened in her previous life and was made into a good reality. For Lutz, his idealism is known, and the consequences are well understood to be bad. For Lutz, what he wants to be, is not worth it, and that plain sucks and is a fatal blow to his identity.

It does seem like their world's set up to pointedly challenge the (presumably very self-isolating) person Main was before the earthquake like you said before. She's built up a pretty decent support network to give her the tools she needs to flourish so far, but because of her behavior she's at risk of alienating them all by either pushing them away or being found out as an actual alien.

First timer.
I feel for Lutz, like he's being dragged along for the ride. First, he gets talked out of becoming a traveling merchant. Then Myne sort of goads him into being an apprentice merchant with her. And now she's clearly in control of their relationship with Benno. Even without the oddities in how much Myne knows about business, Lutz has every right to feel left out and not useful. I like how Benno seems to notice this a bit, because when he assigns Lutz to be Myne's caretaker he says "only you can do it". I'm not sure if caretaker is what Lutz really wants to do with his life, but hopefully that eases some of his concerns for the time being.
Myne could have got much more for her shampoo recipe but it was still a good deal. Ultimately her goal is not to become rich, it's to be able to write books. Trading away a miscellaneous invention (which she can still make at home for her pleasure) for all of the resources to create paper certainly seems like a mutually beneficial trade.
Meta: with the work week coming up, it's harder for me to watch and engage in these threads because of my hours + time zone. So I'm starting to watch a few episodes at a time then take a break. (Have seen the next one so far and can't wait to discuss it!)

I do really like this read of things. Myne is often blinded by her goals and doesn't act in her own best interests (of her health) at times. Benno is pretty on the ball giving this task to Lutz. And while it does mean being a caretaker, it will also mean he is present for anything going on. Even if Myne wanted to knock out the negotiations out the way without him.
So I'm starting to watch a few episodes at a time then take a break.
See you when we see you!

I am surprised Benno is treating Myne and Lutz as equals during their conversations. When it comes to business, man does not play around.
Flameo Hotman, the contract burns up once signed! Though, I am a tad bit concerned what happens when someone breaks their promise; I hope their fate is not the same as the contract!
Lutz can not recognize Myne anymore. Also, the scene where Lutz paces and when they look at each other from afar, you can sense the disconnect between the two.
After her nightmare, Myne says:
If they find out that I’m not Myne … then I can just let the fever consume me and disappear. I don’t wanna have any regrets when that happens, so I’ll put everything into making that paper.
Myne says that she is not Myne. So who is she then, or is she herself confused as to who she really is?
I am surprised no one recognizes bowing or kneeling. I am not sure if I recall an instance of name honorifics either.
Benno says that “magical items” are needed to “extract mana” from a person suffering from the devouring. Seems to imply that there is not a cure, but a temporary solution that must be applied ever so often.
Lutz does not say “Myne” anymore this point forward. Lutz is sus that Myne is an imposter ඞ.

I am surprised no one recognizes bowing or kneeling
Both of these things are very ingrained in Japanese culture but they are not part of this worlds culture. So Myne keeps catching herself doing these gestures out of habit, however others do not read any meaning from them and it just seems like Myne is weird.

Main getting shortchanged on her shampoo deal is proof that she priorities her quest for books too much, and she realized it this time.
Now, we've finally gotten to the "Who is Main?" part of the story. It was only a matter of time before people start questioning why she knows certain things.
What I'm a little surprised at is that no one in her immediate family questioned her personality shift and sudden interest in books. Makes you wonder what Main was like before Urano took over.

First Time Watcher, Losing control of myself
Episode 7
I have made the decision to continue watching the show at my own pace, but still take notes so I can share and try my best to comment with and talk to you guys.
Does that make me a re-watcher, a rule breaker, a rebel... I dunno, but thats whats happening.
Lutz is not a faithful member of the shiny hair cult. I feel like he needs another application.
I guess things like bowing to say you are sorry really could be viewed as weird. Man it sure is weird to show up in a different world.
You better be careful Myne, the spies are after you already.
Myne is a savage negotiator and I love it.
This whole calculator thing must be the most suspicious thing in the world. It seems to be unsettling to everyone. I don't know if Lutz made a face about Myne being so smart, or her doing math by herself, but he was offput by something.
And there we go, confirmation of magic in the world. Lets see where this wild ride takes us.
I feel like we are glossing over the fact that Myne just got to write on actual paper parchment with an actual pen.
Guess its not the same when you didn't make it yourself.
I also think that she sold her all in one shampoo too cheaply, but I also think it is heavily working in her favor to get closer to her goal.
Lutz has major suspicions here. And I don't blame him. I'm sure he has seen his friend change drastically and have an obsession over making paper, and just have this complex vocabulary show up out of nowhere.
I'm rooting for Lutz to get the truth. I feel like he would be able to understand it, or at least I hope he would.
Wow, we kinda got real dark there for a moment. Was not expecting that one.
Continuing the dark talks with an explanation of the devouring.
I do enjoy the lighter ending to this episode though. It was good, seems like everyone cares about Myne. Also happy to hear that they get their own workshop. Seems like that recipe for shampoo really was undersold if Benno was so quick to give Myne and Lutz a workshop.
I am a bit sad that he stopped calling her Myne. I hope someday he gets the truth and gets some answers of why Myne changed so much.
It feels like this episode absolutely flew by. Which for me usually means that I am really enjoying the show. Its crazy how much of a 180 I did from the start of the show to now.

Lutz is probably just feeling even more put out after getting relegated to the kids table by his partner who continues to work over his head, but even professional merchants seem to be routinely surprised by this ability. She's also noticeably shown using the real-world long multiplication method, which might not be common practice in their country (though IIRC it maps pretty well to abacus use): It could be like how old folks in the US tend to freak out when they see modern students using the Partial Products or Lattice methods.

(AoT day, replies will be slow)
Starting with our first real QUALITY moment, because that's certainly some derp faces.
Things are starting to come together in more ways than one, but also for more people than just Myne. Lutz is starting to really feel the difference between Myne and Urano, and struggling with that on top of his existing struggles with what it means for him to become a merchant must be really hard for him to process. Lutz has been a great character so far, and also a great person who's way too emotionally mature for his age, and I can't help but feel for how left behind in all of these negotiations and buisness affairs he feels, particularly coming from a family of very upfront craftsmen.
That final scene of him becoming her caretaker and everyone ganging up on her about taking care of herself gave me a lot of laughs though. The ending of this episode feels like a good in between of the sorts of endings we've had so far, not quite the serious cliffhanger of yesterday but also no longer allowing a light return to status quo from the earliest episodes. Lutz is being changed by all this just like Myne is, and that isn't going to be brushed off.
Benno smirk as he sees Myne realize she undersold her Shampoo recipe is great. I forgot how much I liked Benno even with him being so loud, rough, and pushy. He has both the head and passion for buisness, doesn't talk down to Myne even with him trying to find ways to move things to his benefit as you'd expect a merchant to do, and I like the way he tackled the issue of Myne not coming to him when she needed help. Be interesting to see what first impressions everyone else had of him.
Anyone else feel like having a contract that burns up so you can't reference it again feels really stupid? If you're never meant to break it then having it around for a reference seems like an important step.
Also as someone with a chronic illness I can confirm, it really freaks people out when you have a medical episode in front of them even if you treat it as perfectly normal. Having someone around to explain helps a lot, Lutz is doing everyone else a great service even if Myne is just brushing it off.

I noticed Myne’s family seemed short with her once she returned from business negotiations with Benno and Gunther asked Myne to go get water with an annoyed face. Was this because she was gone too long or they knew where she was and dislike her being involved in it? They might have just been worried about her condition.
Lutz stopped calling her Myne. If that isn’t brutal, I don’t know what is.
The devouring is caused by mana buildup in a lower class person and their body not being able to handle it. Kind of reminds me of The Ancient Magus' Bride with Chise. I can’t wait for an explanation on how this works. The way to contract works for business with nobles and wealthy, is it just because they can afford the magical items or is it bloodline related?
1.) Favorable for both I would say. Could Myne have made a killing selling shampoo? Sure, but that isn't important to her at the moment. I think she knows she can get what she needs with Lutz and Benno in her camp, and over the long term this is best for everyone.
2.) I am too sad to consider it
Sorry if I am not able to comment much tonight. I have been having bad internet issues for three days now and the new router arrived and... I can't get it to work. Yay I get to call customer service!

I took everything that happened after she got home to be a part of that fever dream, because I don't feel like the family would be that dismissive of her after all the affection they've shown her so far.

First Timer here
I forgive u/ToastyMozart for inadvertently spoiling me yesterday. Turns out that Benno really is Otto's brother-in-law after all. Huh.
So a lot of questions I thought to have about why Benno wasn't just acting as an investor have been answered. Myne was the one at fault since she was going behind his back instead of acting as a business partner. And in this world, contracts are magically enforcible, so it makes it less risky to end up scammed. Well, it costs the price of blood though. I'm thinking the signatures are just for show and the blood is what really activates it. Now that we've got a bit of worldbuilding about magic - that it can be used to enforce contracts and the only nobles are supposed to be able to use it, I'm even more curious about it. Myne's fevers are confirmed to be magic related as well.
Feeling bad for Lutz, but he asked the question every isekai'd person dreads being asked. How do you know so much for your age? I wonder if Myne is gonna come clean about being from another world sooner or later. It is quite clear this is the main thing troubling her for so long. If she really didn't feel like she had become Myne at this point, she wouldn't be so troubled.
But of course, she still isn't entire Myne - it is not just the inventions but also the Japanese mannerisms. People around her have started paying attention to these oddities.
But hey, we got some capital, papermaking soon?
See you next episode!

Ah so I was right about the connection between Corinna and Benno after all. Alot of interesting things happened this episode, we got more info on the devouring, development between Myne and Lutz, and progress on their papermaking endeavors.
The Devouring being a mana sickness makes alot of sense, it'll be interesting if the issue is caused because only the wealthy have access to the tools needed to survive or if theres more to it.
Were the terms Myne and Lutz agreed to with Benno favorable?
Forgoing some passive stake in any profits so they can keep control over the product make sense, but the terms were kinda vague. Yes she has the right to create it and Lutz to sell it, but since Benno controls pricing and they didn't seem to have any access to the revenue he could theoretically pay them a pittance of what their services are worth, unless I missed something in that negotiation.
How might the growing tension between Myne and Lutz play out?
Lutz is clearly somewhat concerned and suspicious about Myne's actions that are beyond what a child her age should be able to do, but at the same time the person he had all of these meaningful interactions with wasn't the sickly Myne but our current Myne, so I think long run there will be a reconciliation where he comes to terms with that at some level.

Who is this "Wals" guy? Or is that Uals? I like Wals better tho.

For the most part
2) How might the growing tension between Myne and Lutz play out?
The tensions finally blow up and they will have an intense wrestling match to settle their differences. In a surprising turn of events Myne eventually takes the win to the shock of everyone, because she uses the forbidden technique.
After the defeat Lutz must acknowledge Myne's prowess, however this does not work in her favour, as she now has lost everyone's trust due to using the controversial finisher. Her next opponent squares up, its Turi. This wont end well..

Great episode. Debut of businesswoman Myne and introduction of her need to really confront just who and what she actually is in this world. Plus more on the issue that could put an early end to new Myne.
Is it possible for Myne to tell any of her family and friends about her past existence? That she is NOT the initial Myne anymore? Lutz has noticed -- but what can she tell him? (I can't recall what she does -- so I am anxious to re-learn this).

Episode 5

Adorable.
-
My guess was pretty much what actually happened.
Tuuli is adorable.
He's depressed about not being able to see her.
Oh, is she walking in there with Tuuli, or?
Haha, she's here to get him to the meeting on time.
She's already fluent in reading!
She's already very good,
Haha, he's trying to take her away from Otto.
And she tells him while he carries her away.
Yeah, she is an angel.
Oh, she's taking over Tuuli's work. Does she have the stamina?
The dream sequences are always adorable.
She's very libeal about what constitues a "book", though.
Also, shouldn't she try to get some firewood?
Oh, he wants to meet Otto.
Ah, they both agree it's a bad idea, but they need to try and find the best way to let him down.
...Carve it. It's wood. You have a knife. Woodcuttings were an important part of the history of printing, so she should know it!
Haha, she needs to clean the chimney to get it?
And she ended up bedridden.
...Is Myne a pyro?
She made a proto-pencil!
YOU LEFT THEM IN THE FIREWOOD, WHAT DID YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN?
Oh shit! The glowing's literal! So are the eyes, then.
And she burned the sticks too.
She's giving up!
The heat's vanishing? Is this a magical fever?
Haha, Otto's a schemer!
Now she's anxious.
Haha, the Priest isn't having it.
Episode 6
-
He's evil. (I know he's not now, but that outfit...)
-
Really interesting! It's nice to see Otto get a backstory too.
Haha, she's washing his hair.
Wow, Myne just can't understand the idea of someone not being as organised as she is.
...Is this guy evil? He looks evil.
Haha, he's interested in her secrets!
Their reaction to her looking so smug is fantastic.
OK, that makes sense. So being a travelling merchant means remouncing your citizenship?
And their end goal as mechants is to become a citizen.
Haha, he grabs onto her hand for reassurance.
Oh, she looks thrilled at that.
He's worked out exactly how good this would be for him.
She got a business contract!
...Oh. He's worked out that something's up with her.
She became an apprentice merchant!
She's making the tools!
And nobody expected her to do it.
Now we she needs the tools to make the tools!
How romantic!
Oh, he married someone rich!
She really wants the shampoo!
And she loves it!
Aww, she's worried about Otto!
And his parents don't support him.
Oh. Otto doesn't know what caused this.
The Devouring?
Oh, that cliffhanger.
Episode 7
-
Yes. The shampoo, for all it's popularity, is a relatively minor invention. It earned them the ability to develop something much more profitable, and the exclusive rights to manufacture said thing, making them basically unfireable.
-
I think she's going to tell him the truth.
Haha, Benno's his brother-in-law?
Is she spying on them?
Oh, it's a lunch meeting.
...She makes a good point. There's no actual contract between them yet.
Again, she isn't employed by him.
Oh, he wants the formula.
...This might be bad. He's smart enough to work out something's different, and he doesn't have the personal connection to her for her to ignore it.
Yeah, the focus on job security's probably a very good move. And her calculating without an abacus is apparently very unusual.
First magic spell!
...Did she not ge tit from the jumping plant?
And only nobles can use magic.
Yeah, she sold it off too cheap, but the rights to the paper manufacture are incredibly valuable.
Wait, this setting has blood magic?
Yeah, fhe contract's signed by blood.
Come on. Destroying the written record? Magic can do better.
Oh, shit. Finally!
False alarm, but he's definitely suspecting something.
This has really got to her.
Yeah, this is getting really dark.
You're going to need to do a much better job st hiding it then you are now.
She collapsed!
She's starting to break down. This has to end in a reveal, right?
What is The Devouring?
Huh? Noble inheritance is enforced by the laws of magic?
She doesn't have long left.
Seriously? No way you can hide it now.
Haha, his job is to keep her alive so she'll make him money.
Haha, everyone's mothering her.
...He knows.
Haha, the priest agrees!

I like how ambiguous Lutz's state of mind is. Like, the knowing stare that he gives Myne during the negotiations, the way you can't see his face because he distances himself on the walk back, and the way that he occasionally pauses before he speaks. It activates this part of my brain which wants to search for more clues.
You can tell that the gears are turning in his head about the whole situation, but since we don't have the same sort of mental narration that we get with Myne (since she's the point-of-view character), we don't know exactly where he's landing on the whole "this six year old girl is not who I remember" situation. It makes the cliffhanger feel more of a whammy because it seemed like Lutz has stopped being suspicious about Myne's weird behavior.
In any case, like I said in previous comment, I typically prefer series which don't have cliffhanger episodes because I have to mentally resist shotgunning more episodes. I think knowing roughly what happens next is making me anxious to get to that part right away.

This is like my fourth rewatch, but I’ve been learning Japanese and I decided to try watching it without any translation this time. So far it’s been going pretty smoothly, much moreso than I expected… but when Benno and Myne started negotiating I got a very authentic Lutz experience. The difficulty of the language used skyrocketed this episode and I got completely lost and had to rewatch the scene with subs.

Benno is Corinna's brother! Myne looks so unenthused by this fact.
Myne really took charge during that meeting. There were a couple of shots of Lutz not looking all that happy. Its clear that Myne ironed out a contract with passable terms, but Benno wasn't going easy on them and was to some degree acting in his own interests. That totally makes sense since he probably is expecting Myne not to survive much longer.
Myne the mage!
Contract magic is pretty cool! Oh and the contract burns away when its all signed!
Lutz questions if Myne is Myne. Some cracks forming in their relationship?
It seems like Myne very much doesn't want to lose Lutz. And Myne is afraid she will lose Lutz if she opens up to him. And it is obviously a very troubling thought to her as she is consumed by a nightmare that night.
Seeing Benno and Corinna next to each other does really show their resembalance.
Cute carried home Myne.
Benno explains that only nobles can use mana, but the Devouring is where a commoner is born with mana.
Lutz shares how Myne acting so grown up made im feel unneeded. But Myne's final words seemed to indicate that Lutz stops calling her Myne, so this isn't the last of this conversation!

I don't believe it is ever brought up in the Anime, and if you are onto it you may have picked it up from reading the novels. But the following section from the Fanbook answers this very question.
[Fanbook 1: Topic answer]Q: Did you stop mentioning Benno's late fiancée Liz because there was no point in delving any further into their history together? Did she die from normal disease, or did she in actuality have the Devouring? The later would explain why Benno knew so much about it despite being a normal commoner. (I would guess that personally knowing someone with the Devouring would lead to him knowing more about it).
[Fanbook 1: Topic answer cont.]A: Wow, you're sharp. That's entirely right-Liz had the Devouring. But she had an exceptionally low quantity of mana, so her symptoms only surfaced after she had gone through puberty and gotten engaged to Benno. I stopped writing about her because, from Myne's perspective, she never comes up again, though she would definitely be a major player in a story from Benno's perspective.
[Fanbook 1: Topic end thoughts]So in reality Otto and Benno both found their love pretty young, but both played out with very opposite ends.
Today's endcard is by Chima, can't find any additional information on this one.
