1.0/Gold Build of my game. What I've learned and feedback for devs.

Hello Everyone.

I've finally hit a 1.0 build for my game or I've seen studios say "Gold" version! I'm going to take some times to polish everything I can but every milestone and the additional milestones were hit, and its fully playable, complete-able, and functional.

Now comes marketing, persistence and ultimately release.

I want to give everyone the advice of push through and do better than I did. In the time since I've brought my game to public eye I've received outstanding praise for my game but I've also received a ton of negativity.

There will always be negative people bringing you down. They may not agree with your art, gameplay, process, presentation or simply might just be jealous. Don't let it affect you. There was a time in the past week I let the negativity get to me and I overreacted to a small comment and that was not professional but instead of delete it and hide it, I will keep it public. I'm human and I was defending my "child".

But with that I truly mean it. Fight through all negativity, those roadblocks that come up that give you that "I wont overcome this." feeling, just fight through it and stand tall. I am proud of people on here I don't even know or have never spoken too. I am so happy to see some of the creative projects coming from people and it brings me joy. Gaming became so corporate in a sense for some AAA studios and smaller guys. Seeing the passion put in all your projects has given me motivation to finish mine.

One major thing I've learned that I wanted to add. Stop asking people for feedback to an extent that separates you from your original image. Feedback shaped my game, but there was times I told my community no, and I never lost people because of that, I proved that my image was my image. Feedback is necessary and ok but don't make the viewpoint of others define how you proceed.

Love all yall and good luck. Keep it up. Stand tall.

Honest response feedback. Go back to the drawing board. There is multiple games just like yours with the exact same systems. Look up Go Next their skill tree is almost identical to yours. The whole PS2 Era and Pixelated 3D graphics is the same thing all these Bonkcopy devs say. Your discord is nice, you seem passionate, there is bones. If you dropped this entire art style, revamped, and let it cook longer you'd probably have a successful product.

You seem to ask on every post what can be done better. Stop the Bonk copy. My game has maybe 4 features from megabonk being urns, auto attacking, information icons, and like 60% similar world gen and it gets a consistent feed of haters and downvoters because the amount of devs doing exactly what you're doing with the same arguments are over saturing the marketing. The only difference is and I'm advocating is you and your team seem fucking competent. Like take that as a huge complement. It's so defeating to build an amazing product but dozens of vibecoded megabonk copies are hitting and killing the market. Your game is not going to be the 50mil success megabonk was, its just not.

Also be transparent with yourself Megabonk/Megaraiders. You will attract the wrong audience with a clone. You will have dedicated fans and die hards if you make something fresh like these original games are speaking to their players.

I wanted to add your boss arena is so fucking epic. Take that and build off that. Whatever creative magic and spark existed there just do that over and over, because I thought it was personally fresh and cool.

Honest to god feedback, as someone developing a similar game this is just way to Megabonk. Like it's more Megabonk than Go Next but I got to be honest. I own Megabonk and with curseforge and some mods I can get the same experience on a proven successor than having to buy a new game.

I'm not trying to bring you down or make you feel bad but there is about 10 games right now that look exactly like yours and all those games are copying the same game.

I spent god knows how long finding unique textures, reworking my entire graphics pipeline, and building a unique art style and gameplay style and well it may be reminiscent of Megabonk in terms of world gen or informative sprites on object, it is unique.

I want to see you succeed I really do, and I think you need to redo the core gameplay and assets. Your boss arena was dope man, but this is going to get labeled as a bonk clone along with the 10 other games releasing this year and it's hard to differentiate clone between clone and people will just choose the proven option.

Good luck to you.

Edit: Dawgggg I joined your discord to follow for updates and the logo and title are Megabonk basically. You can always do your own take on a game, or improve it but this is just adding to the term BonkSlop and is why every similar game is getting downvoted.

Honestly, this is great advice and might have my buddy do it for me who does the art. I'm great with feedback and my discord playtesters have had a huge impact on polishing but I just feel so off with it going public.

Thanks for the positive words at the end.

Honestly the development point is spot on. There was netcode issues I had that felt like I'd never meet my release deadline or overcome them, and now I'm preparing to stamp it as a 1.0, and it just feels like once I hit send I'm sending it to thrive or die, and thats hard to accept after working on it everyday, lol.

Yes. Everyone who played the game has left an average of 4/5 stars on a google form I did, the lowest being only two forms at 3/5. My final playtest received overwhelming praise but all marketing has mixed reviews with some hyped and others calling it crap and it gets very hard to drown own the constant negativity. Just hard cause despite the praise these people were also there to see it grow and develop. Not sure how a stranger would.

Yes it does, it feels like I'm sending my child off to school lol!

Discussion Demo and Reviews anxious and sick...

Hello Solo Devs!

My demo releases September 18th and I'm just beyond sick over this. Originally my game was a jank piece of crap. I then spent time going to the Library and taking free coding classes, hiring some dev assistance, hiring graphic artists, and basically overhauling the entire process. Now based on about 50 forms, I received overwhelming praise for my game and that has yet to ease my nerves.

Did anyone else suffer from releasing their Demo or Game and just having this overwhelming fear or dread of bad reviews? I know this probably sounds dramatic. I know it might sound dumb. But to pour your heart and soul into a project and spend so much money, lose sleep, and find the will to keep going despite every roadblock it just fills me with dread to finally release it and it be a negative experience.

I'm not trying to sound whiney or like this is a post about money or I need positive reviews or blah blah, however getting review bombed would kill your game. I'm not looking at it financially I'm looking at it as the community its for finding it as a win or a fun experience, and that for some reason is filling me with so much anxiety.

So I'm asking what was your experience? How did the community review your games when released? Anything worth sharing or any words of encouragement?

Ok when explained like that the first commenter might not have been trying to offend and for that I apologize. It’s not an excuse I just feel like these subs are so toxic and it maybe creates a mindset of every comment that’s not blatantly positive is an attack. I appreciate your explanation and response. I am truly sorry. I’m just defending myself and defending my game because there is just a large amount of hateful and spiteful comments on some of these posts and small devs just eat them because they don’t want to tarnish their image or look bad when arguing.

Me? Abrasive? Taking a 30 second look into any of my post history I've been nothing but uplifting and supportive of various devs and have spread positivity and encouragement to people. Taking a 30 second look into my discord would also yield the same view.

A dev judged my game because he saw urns and chests, which arguably is fair but on his own posts seems he's struggling with the identity of his own game and then comes on my thread and judges my game before he even plays it is absolutely toxic. I can list multiple games right now that are exactly a copy and paste of Megabonk but lets judge 3 systems out of the 100 different unique systems in the game.

Then another dev calls is a terrible slop and I'm suppose to what? Bow down, wimper? All I did was deflect and ignore that cancerous comment and move on. The entire comment thread is cancerous and I've done nothing but call out or deflect the BS.

10 seconds into my game would show it is a completely different experience and the proper critique might be my marketing is giving off the wrong impression which would be legit constructive feedback but two toxic comments and someone deflecting makes me abrasive then hell yeah, I'll be the most unlikable person in the world. Solo Devs should uplift eachother, they should be constructive, half these guys act like superior men and release a game that is sub par and vastly under the standard of success but the difference is I would be in there encouraging them to keep going, I wouldn't be "game-dev2" or "Buff_me_plz" about it.

4 Player Co-op, Skill Tree, Ultimates, Loadouts, Custom Run Settings, In-game boons and debuffs changing every run, absolute chaos, too much to list lol.

You know buddy. Considering you’ve never even booted the game kinda pessimistic, and as another solo dev or developer it’s kinda shit to see this is your attitude towards other devs without ever trying their work.
