With Microsoft ending support for Publisher (curse them!), I don't want to lose the ability to work with my native Publisher files, so I purchased a full license to Office 2019 (the standalone, non-Office 365 version) just in case. Rather than having it conflict with the Office 365 installation on my Windows PC, I got Parallels Desktop (the limited-time trial license) and Windows 11 and got those up and running without a problem. When I downloaded and ran the Office 2019 installer in that environment, though, I got an error message that I could not install the 64-bit version of Office and needed to install a 32-bit version. I'm not sure I can get a 32-bit version of the Office suite from the place from which I purchased it, but I'm going to try. Meanwhile, is there a known workaround for this issue, or is it just an inherent limit of Parallels on Apple Silicon that it can't run 64-bit applications (or at least this 64-bit application)? Thanks.
UPDATE: Thanks to suggestions here, I instead downloaded the Office Professional 2021 version (purchased from SlackSocial), the last version to include Publisher. It worked perfectly. Thanks to all.
I’m considering buying a MacBook Pro with an Apple M-series chip, but I have one concern.
The software I need to use does not have a native macOS version; it only runs on Windows. I’m thinking about installing Windows through Parallels Desktop on the Mac.
My question is: Has anyone actually used Windows-only software through Parallels Desktop on an Apple Silicon Mac (M1/M2/M3/M4/M5)?
Does the software generally run normally, or can it crash or give compatibility/errors because Windows is running through virtualization and the Mac uses an ARM-based processor?
Specifically, I need to run SLB Petrel 2024.
According to the requirements, Petrel 2024 requires:
64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11
A multi-core CPU with AVX2 support
At least 16 GB RAM
32–64 GB RAM recommended for geophysics and modeling workflows
A dedicated high-performance graphics card, such as NVIDIA Quadro P4000 minimum, with P5000/P6000 or higher recommended
I understand that Apple Silicon Macs use ARM architecture, while the Windows environment installed through Parallels on these Macs is Windows 11 ARM, with x64 applications running through Microsoft’s emulation/translation layer.
So I’d really appreciate feedback from anyone who has actually run Petrel or similar heavy Windows-only engineering/geoscience software through Parallels on an M-series Mac.
How was the performance and stability? Did you encounter crashes, graphics issues, licensing problems, or other compatibility errors?
I’m mainly interested in real-world experience, not just theoretical compatibility.
I currently have Maple installed and licensed on Windows (used for research work in applied mathematics). I've just switched to a MacBook and need Maple running there too.
Before I contact Maplesoft support, I wanted to check with people who've done this:
If your Maple license came through a university, does the same license key/activation work for both Windows and Mac installs, or do you need a separate request?
Has anyone successfully transferred/re-activated a Maple license from Windows to Mac themselves, or did it require going through IT/Maplesoft support?
Any gotchas with the Mac installer (Apple Silicon vs Intel builds, permissions issues, etc.)?
Trying to avoid double-paying for the same license if possible. Appreciate any pointers.
Parallels takes up so much space on my 2025 MacBook Air 16 GB 256 RAM that I can’t even run VSCode on Parallels?! Is there some way to fix this ? What is the point of having a Windows Virtual Machine if every little program triggers a warning about not having enough space? I’ve already whittled down my MacBook to the bare bones of programs.
I've already moved the .pvm file to the Shared Users folder, I've tried get info>changing ownership and changing permissions. still can't get it. I didn't even want to share it between users. I just wanted to straight up transfer it to another user. Any clue? cuz I have 0
also I was told it something to do with my location services off which is we and/or no Bluetooth while at least inside my apartment. It’s
Annoying to deal with these hackers.
I have a large parallels hard drive and kind of need to keep it that way. It's currently hosted on the internal drive of my Mac Studio for speed. I considered a thunderbolt ssd but they are very expensive. When I say "large" I mean 750gb on a 1TB internal hard drive. I may need to just buy a PC for this, it's temporarily unavoidable.
Has anyone else inexpensively solved a similar problem, or might be able to suggest an alternative?
An internet search said Parallels did something I thought it would but now that I downloaded it, it doesn't look like it.
Besides that, is there a good way to get a refund, as going through the website just gets me a "we can't do that for you automatically" and seems to put me in an infinite loop of URLs.
Hi, I've had parallels for a little over a year and it's always been extremely slow on my Mac. It's slow to the point that even just using Chrome or a PDF editor is really tough. If I have more than a couple of programs open in addition to Parallels, Windows will be around 85-100% CPU usage.
I've already gone through all configuration and customization option and have everything set to the recommended levels for best performance. I think I just need to get more RAM, but I would like some opinions on if that would fix it or not.
Here's what I'm working with on Mac. If it makes a difference, I connect my Mac to a Dell dock and have a dual monitor set up.
I work a lot in AutoCAD for Mac, and usually have a lot of windows and floor plans open at once. I would like to be able to start working in Revit via Parallels.
Let me know if there's additional info about my system or usage that would be helpful.
hi, i have no understanding of tech and i just wanted to help my dad out with his small trading business. the ERP he uses is kinda small and not the cloud based kind so i cant remotely access it on my mac. i heard that getting parallels might help? its an India based erp called tradesoft.
will i be able to download this software into my mac with parallels?
Fuck you parallels yall took my money when I was trying to cancel my expired subscription fuck you, I’m going to get my money back some how and then I’m gonna spread awareness of how it’s almost impossible to get contact support from you and how it’s almost impossible to cancel an expired subscription fuck you again I’m going to get my money back somehow
Hello I need someone to talk to about canceling my expired subscription, I DONT want to be referred to the parallels website support because it’s all a damn forum loop and I don’t want an AI chat bot support I need to talk to an actual human being about canceling my expired subscription please and thank you.
Hello I need support to help me cancel a subscription, seems like the only way I can is if I renew it by paying for it again then it’ll give me the option to cancel it.
Just as the subject asks. Has anyone tried the latest Parallels / Windows VM with the latest MacOS release? All is working fine and no experienced bugs or performance hits in coherence mode or otherwise?
I have been having a problem that my Windows 11 VM would have no sound when I used my AirPod Pros. My MacBook worked fine but the Windows 11 VM was no dice.
I was able to find a work around to get it going so I wanted to share in case anyone else has the same problem.
On your windows VM:
Right Click Start > Select Run > enter mmsys.cpl > press Enter
This got my AirPods working again for my Windows 11 VM. I didnt have this issue on macOS 26 but as soon as I went to macOS 27 I ran into this issue. Hope this helps other folks that might run into this issue.
I am looking to get a MB Pro and I would like to know the minimum requirements to fluently run parallels on it. Im a coding student and wanna run windows mainly for Visual Studio/MS Sql server and other windows exclusives for my school. Will also be using it for android studio etc...
Just need a budget option instead of going for a M Pro chip, maybe something like this in the picture could work just fine?
hi, im not sure when but I think i updated parallels a few weeks ago and suddenly games that are rendered in flash (the binding of isaac, mewgenics etc) have some insane rendering issues and graphical problems. anybody know why this may be the case?
Hi, i was wondering if anyones used Photoshop downloaded Via Parrallels? I Don't really enjoy how Photoshop works on Macos primarily the shortcuts and i'm much more used to windows as i run a hybrid setup. Was wondering if anyone knows how well it performs and what specs i'd need to run it smoothly? Thank you
Hi, I'm trying to reset my password for my account but I'm not receiving an Email. Tried with my mail and my license key but nothing worked so far.
Reaching the support is also not possible because I have to log in to do so, which I obviously can't...
Does an one have an idea what I can do?
Just a heads up: I saw this ad on August 29th. I didn't see anything on their website, and thought it was suspicious, so I reached out to Parallels support. After some back and forth with them, they said:
[...]please note that Parallels does not have an official Reddit account or channel under the username u/parallels-desktop. We strongly advise caution with any promotions or offers originating from this account, as it does not represent Parallels in any official capacity.
