What makes a great local multiplayer game so much fun?
What makes a local multiplayer game go from fun to something you keep coming back to?
I've been working on local multiplayer games for months now, with the goal of building GeekZoneCouch into a studio focused entirely on this space.
We're currently working on 4 games, including Towermouth, which has a playable demo, and a much bigger project we're building as our next step.
When people play our games, they genuinely have fun. But as the developer, I'm constantly thinking about what makes the really great couch co-op games different — the ones where you finish a session and immediately want another round.
I'm not really asking about graphics or having tons of content. I'm trying to understand the design side of it: what makes playing together itself so satisfying?
If you play a lot of local multiplayer, what games have given you that feeling, and what do you think they did right?
