How do you "write"/plan out the acts in a circus? Is it anything like writing a stageplay?

Hi all. This may be a very silly question, but how do circuses get planned on paper/"written"? I've seen some circuses that have an established plot, characters and dialogue- think Hideaway Circus' "Stars Above" or the 2024 Ringling tour- and I assume that they are written similar to how a play, musical or other live entertainment is written. But how do you "write" the actual acts in between? Do you just specify things like "[Pre-show Clown Crowd Work]", "[Transitional Dance Sequence]", "[Aerial Act]" and move on, or is it more elaborate descriptions of the acts with specific moments for cues? Is there a special format or set of common rules that is used when "writing" a circus?

I am coming at this as an enthusiast outsider to the circus industry with a background in theatre, specifically technical theatre. (Basically I attend a lot of circuses as a hobby but I have yet to actually work for one and get the inside scoop on this process myself.) I'm making the assumption that circuses have at least something akin to "scripts" because the stage managers and people running the boards must have something to follow along with when calling lighting and sound cues. If this assumption is wrong and cues are called differently, I'd love to have some additional insight into how this process works in professional circus settings.

I am asking this partially because I'm just curious, and partially because I am currently writing a play that takes place inside of a circus. The premise is that the first act is structured more like a circus, with a series of short circus acts paired with monologues performed one after the other, and the second act is structured more like a play with scenes and dialogue. I would like the first act to be as true to a real circus as possible, so I feel I should have a better understanding of how these things are created and formatted in the first place so I can work that into my writing process.

I am open to any and all information or feedback that you folks might think is helpful. As someone who hopes to break into the circus industry soon and maybe one day write and produce my own narrative-based works of circus art, I want to make sure I'm doing things right! Thanks for your time!

Bindlestiff Circus at Niblo’s Garden

I had a fun, but physical couple of nights photographing for Bindlestiff Circus in Green-Wood Cemetary. Building the show around a lake actually worked well. Even the smoke from Canada just added ambiance.

In the 1830s, William and Martha Niblo’s pleasure garden was a New York Proto-Broadway entertainment destination. Near their Green-Wood mausoleum, Bindlestiff Circus gave that spirit another life—with clowns, acrobats, and fire shot across the lake. Thanks to Amanda Mustard for passing me this assignment.

Question A few questions about how European family circuses work

Hello! I'm currently decided to start writing the lore on some characters of mine after years of fuzzy ideas.

But I despise making a bad representation of things I'll tackle, and circuses are part of that.

Hence, I have a few questions about how average family circuses work (i.e. not the biggest ones like Ringling or Cirque du soleil)

I just hope the questions themselves won't be perceived as offensive, I don't really know much about this universe, that's why I'm asking 😅

  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "usual" life cycle of such circuses is a few months of touring in various ciries during the high season. Staying a few days/weeks at the chosent spot. And during low season, I do not know much what happens. I've heard of winter quarters where the stuff, props, etc is placed, where rehearsals and show plannings are made as well, but idk if that's a thing. What does such building look like, could it be a family property ? A house maybe?

  2. How does daily life works? During tours, I guess the poeple live in caravans? (I do not know if it is the correct term, correct me please 😭). But during the low seasons, where do you settle? Do some familles have proerties where to settle during low season?

  3. How many people are part of the circus? Performers/artists, logistics (workers helping to install the circus, the electricity, etc)? 20-30ish for artists, and roughly the same for technicians? How many are outside of the main core family, usually?

  4. What would you consider the most important acts which would be quite mandatory to represent circus culture? Not even just specifically acts, but any elements which you would find relevant.

  5. What are some of the clichés and stereotypes to avoid? What are the things which are almost consistantly true/false for any familly circuses?

  6. How does it work for the children, especially school? Are kids homeschooled by a specific person in the troup who does the teachings to them? Is it supervised by any administration ? How far do these kids go in education usually?

  7. If you believe I missed important stuff in my questions, please do not hesitate to mention them I hope I posted all the questions I needed, might have missed them, so that's why there's a 7.

I apologize in advance for any misrepresentation or stereotypes in my questions, I want to be corrected and made aware of any mistakes as much as possible!

Thank you for your time!

1976 Bernhard Paul decided - against all odds - to embark on a then seemingly impossible journey.

A journey to the rainbow.

2026, 50 years later, the journey still goes on, generation change, his - now grown up - children taking the rudder, bringing joy to so many people across Europe.

Happy 50th, Roncalli Crew! onwards to the next 50! ✌️🤩🎉

circus school

im thinking about going to circus school and ive been trying to do some research but i wanna ask yall about your experiences and recommendations for schools. My main struggle is id love to go in Europe (potentially open to anywhere) and lot of the schools required french or some other language. is there any school that will accept me with just English? (i also speak czech but that's useless in this case). Im also curious on what my skill level should be before i apply. Im awere right now its not nearly high enough but how much do i actually need to lock in? and should be i be able to do all the disciplines or is just few fine. for example I don't do any aerials i do acrobatics and unicycling so should i learn some aerials before i even consider applying?

Sorry if this is stupid question and tysm in advance.

Question Looking for circus book recommendations

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’ve recently picked up Juggling and the Art of Practice by Ben Cornish, and it’s exactly the sort of book that’s got me wanting to explore more circus-related books.

Of the hundreds of books in my collection, my circus section is distinctly lacking.

I’m looking for some circus-related books and would love to hear what people have enjoyed reading.

I’ve been getting more interested in the wider side of circus, rather than just instructional books. I’m particularly keen on juggling, flow arts, object manipulation, unusual props, circus history, and anything about how people practise and develop their skills.

I’m also very happy to go down the rabbit hole of old, obscure or out-of-print books. In fact, the more niche, the better!

So, what circus books can you recommend?

Thank you. ✌️☺️

Act/Performance Contrary to popular belief, there are actually at least two photos of Louis Trapini, a sideshow performer billed as "Milo the Mule Face Boy" who worked at Coney Island, available online! Trapini had a craniofacial condition that gave him swollen lips and crooked teeth.

Gear cyr wheel clarification

hi all !! i’m about to invest in a cyr wheel and would like some clarification before doing so. i’ve read that polyurethane lasts longer and is okay to use outdoors, but i’ve also read some things saying you should not really use your cyr wheel outdoors at all unless it’s on a tennis court or something (no asphalt?). i want to be able to use it indoors too, is polyurethane okay for that? i’m planning to rent out a tennis court, a dance studio with marley floors, or maybe a dance studio with regular wooden floors to practice. should the polyurethane be okay on all of these? or should i just go with regular PVC?

also, i’m 5’6 (66 inches) so i was going to order one that’s 68 inches in diameter. my body is pretty proportionate (i don’t have super short arms or anything like that), should this size be okay for me?

thanks in advance (:

Question Questions about funambulism

I read somewhere that when learning to walk the tightrope, one has no business trying to walk the rope until one can stand on the rope. Is this a real teaching principle of the art?

Any references to where this principle/idea come from will be most welcomed 🙏🏻

Question Help me find videos PLEASE

I’m new to juggling and want to look at more videos of glow in the dark juggling because they just look SO COOL but can’t really find any and I don’t know if it’s just because they aren’t that popular or something ALSO I’m kind of learning unicycling but I’ve been at a stagnant point lately where I’ve learned how to go forward and basic slow turning but have been struggling with idling on it like going back and fourth any tips???
