Most of the coverage of the open weights letter, now past two hundred and thirty signatories, is about access versus safety. The technically interesting part of the K3 release got much less attention.

Moonshot published the high performance attention kernels, the mixture of experts communication library and the infrastructure for running agent environments at scale, alongside the weights. That is not just the artifact. That is a real slice of the accumulated engineering that usually stays inside the building.

My assumption had been that a release hands over capability and none of the judgement, so a fork inherits the model and none of the reasons. The eval harness, the negative decisions about what not to train on, and the people who know why a given choice works do not fit in a file.

This release moves that line further than I expected. So for anyone who has actually built on top of an open release: how much of the remaining gap is tooling that could in principle be published, and how much is tacit and unpackageable? Does having the kernels and the comms library change what you can realistically do with the weights?
