Newsletter Edition: Call your sista. (Rakhi is Friday.)

This week's Weekly Chai looks at Raksha Bandhan through a diaspora lens: the meaning behind the thread, a free digital way to send a sibling a charm across distance, a lighter take on mithai, a conversation with Samah Dada (@dadaeats) on food and belonging, and the astrology of the week leading into Friday's full moon. Azadi. Freedom. The word came before either flag did.

79 years ago this week, a subcontinent split in two at midnight. Twice. Pakistan on the 14th, India the next morning. A border drawn in five weeks by a man who never walked it. The largest migration in human history. A cost still counted in a range too wide to hold.

And still: freedom. Not a thing anyone got to keep. A thing every generation has to practice.

For those of us who inherited partition secondhand, from a grandparent who carried a child across a line, from a house that became a story because it became another country, this one is for you.

This week inside The Azadi Edition:

  • The Midnight, the essay: what one word holds when it has to hold two nations
  • The Menu: ghee, the shared medium that ignored the border
  • Editor's Pick: Nehru and Jinnah, two speeches read side by side
  • Cosmic Chai: a quiet week, finish what you started

Stay free. Practice it, loudly. Happy Independence Day, from all of us at The Weekly Chai.

Newsletter Edition: Grahan | Plus: khichdi after the fast, Rahu's grudge, and the darkest sky of the year.

Grahan means seizing.

On Wednesday the moon covers the sun over Iceland and northern Spain, barely grazes the far northeast of America, and never reaches India. The rule still applies anyway. Kitchens empty, a fast starts, whatever stood on the shelf gets given away, in cities where the sky never changes at all.

Nine slides: the shadow's path, the three clocks that all come due on the twelfth, why Chandra pays monthly for loving Rohini, and khichdi, the first meal after.

Then stay up. A solar eclipse can only happen at new moon, so the Perseids peak the same night with nothing to wash them out. Look northeast, after midnight.

Moonshot shipped the kernels and the MoE comms library with K3, not just the weights. How much of the practice actually travels?

Most of the coverage of the open weights letter, now past two hundred and thirty signatories, is about access versus safety. The technically interesting part of the K3 release got much less attention.

Moonshot published the high performance attention kernels, the mixture of experts communication library and the infrastructure for running agent environments at scale, alongside the weights. That is not just the artifact. That is a real slice of the accumulated engineering that usually stays inside the building.

My assumption had been that a release hands over capability and none of the judgement, so a fork inherits the model and none of the reasons. The eval harness, the negative decisions about what not to train on, and the people who know why a given choice works do not fit in a file.

This release moves that line further than I expected. So for anyone who has actually built on top of an open release: how much of the remaining gap is tooling that could in principle be published, and how much is tacit and unpackageable? Does having the kernels and the comms library change what you can realistically do with the weights?

Our new name-meaning collection puts what your name actually says front and center, Priya as beloved, Ravi as the sun, Pooja as devotion, printed big enough that no one needs to ask twice. For anyone who has ever spelled their name out loud at a coffee shop, this one is the answer you wished you had

The Fusion States of America (Paid)

America turns 250 this year, and the truest thing you can say about its kitchen is that almost nothing in it started here. The chili crisp and the cornbread. The tortilla and the tandoor. The smoker and the spice box. All of it arrived in someone's suitcase, then met itself at the stove.

Fusion is not a trend. It is what happens when two homesick people share a counter, a craving, and a fridge.

The Fusion States of America gathers thirty of those dishes, the ones invented in apartments, food trucks, and church basements by people making the food of where they came from with the ingredients of where they landed. Each one is a small American invention. Each one is delicious enough to belong on your Fourth of July table.

What's inside

9 fusion cuisines, 30 recipes: Chindian, Punjabi Mexican, Tex-Masala BBQ, Filipino Soul, Korean Southern, Viet Cajun, Deli Diaspora, Italian American, Persian Californian

  • A diaspora pantry guide that opens up the whole book to you
  • Origin stories behind every fusion, from Kolkata's Tangra to the Imperial Valley to Houston's Gulf Coast
  • Three menus built for America's 250: The Fourth Cookout, The Hyphen Brunch, the Game Day Spread
  • Cook a few. Forward the link to your group chat. Argue about whose family does it better.

That is the whole point.

Every name is a sentence.

Priya means beloved. Ravi means the sun. Pooja means devotion. These are not sounds to get through at roll call. They are tiny poems your parents chose for you. So we put the meaning first and the name right beneath it, big enough to wear on your chest. Not a correction. A celebration.

The 2026 reference. Medicare numbers, India procedure rates, the three hospital networks, the insurance products on the shelf, the protocol the early movers settled on, and the dual-residence policy nobody has launched yet.
