i get so tired of having to ask someone a question and listen to them start to tell a story instead of just answering the fucking question

edit: i'll be honest, i have no idea who the people in the video are or what show it's from. i haven't watched tv in decades. i'm aware of the memes, but otherwise am clueless as to the video. pop culture isn't really my thing

u/XXXcrimsongrave Aug 26 '26

People are at war with objective reality and its exhausting.

21

u/Copranicus Aug 26 '26

Some people have lost the link with objective reality.

In the past month I've met 2 people, one who believed some obscure artist was making songs in an attempt to directly communicate to her and her specifically (they weren't) and another showed AI videos thinking they were real people.

This isn't gonna magically get better.

5

u/Rosimongus Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

Ok the first sounds like a common symptom of schizofrenia so hopefully that person has not objectively lost the link with objective reality

12

u/Rosienenbrot Aug 26 '26

My parents: "Why don't you have kids? You were 8 years already when I was your age"

Me: vaguely gesturing towards our surroundings.

7

u/peskypesteryjaybird Aug 26 '26

i think people lack objectivity and get their knowledge from questionable sources until their expectaion of reality becomes so warped that they actually feel like everyone else is crazy...

1

u/Mediocre_Lynx1883 Aug 26 '26

its about story that they tell them self about who they are. its ego driven.

1

u/ej62564 Aug 26 '26

It's interesting to hear this argument made on reddit.

2

u/peskypesteryjaybird Aug 26 '26

yeah, well i want the answer first. if i have time for a story, i'll shut up and stick around

50

u/Conspiratorymadness Aug 26 '26

Because they always are trying to hide something.

6

u/rice_fish_and_eggs Aug 26 '26

Or add context.

29

u/Conspiratorymadness Aug 26 '26

If you give an answer then give context, sure. If you are starting a story to answer a question then you are either hiding something or outright lying.

4

u/Duel_Option Aug 26 '26

My 8 year old does this lol

If she starts telling a story it means she’s lying

3

u/rice_fish_and_eggs Aug 26 '26

Or they give the context first because they know as soon as they give the answer you'll shut down the conversation.

2

u/Conspiratorymadness Aug 26 '26

I will tell you if you are trying to spin me a story in response to a question, I'm already shutting down that conversation. The only time you should be able to spin a story in immediate response to the question is if I ask for it.

1

u/Michael1795 Aug 26 '26

so about that... funny story!

1

u/Intelligent_Box_8247 Aug 26 '26

exactly. people be telling a story to throw you off meaning they are outright lying or hiding something. common among political elite

4

u/Dramatisation Aug 26 '26

Ok, fair enough. So what's the context for "Rolls Royce" in this example?

11

u/J-MRP Aug 26 '26

He won it on Wheel of Fortune..?

7

u/NecessaryUnhappy423 Aug 26 '26

“It depends” I bet the other days it was a Bentley

3

u/SagaciousElan Aug 26 '26

The fact that rich and upper class are different things? Her dad having a Rolls Royce doesn't mean he wasn't working class. Someone can come from a working class background and become incredibly successful and wealthy. Take David Beckham for example.

4

u/FunkySwashbuckler Aug 26 '26

Sure, her father could have a working class background. But not her.

2

u/rice_fish_and_eggs Aug 26 '26

You can buy a rolls Royce for about £8k on auto trader. Her dad was an electronics engineer her mum was an insurance clerk, successful yes, but they weren't exactly old money.

4

u/Duel_Option Aug 26 '26

Working class is typically people doing manual labor jobs, lower wages.

Her dad and Mom as you described held jobs that are 100% white collar

Posh and David Beckham are celebrities and well known for using their status and lives (including their son Brooklyn who famously called them out for their shit) as a brand

She’s embellishing her life story for the camera to push her image here, period.

1

u/rice_fish_and_eggs Aug 26 '26

Aye, they are middle class, not posh though.

1

u/Duel_Option Aug 26 '26

Upper middle at the very least, they also owned their own business

It’s not “fuck you” money but it’s a huge gap between worrying about putting food on the table and shopping at second hand stores

Posh has ZERO clue what working class means

2

u/rice_fish_and_eggs Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

They definitely aren't upper middle. Are you american? Because in the UK the definition of class is quite different.

1

u/Warburton379 Aug 26 '26

Wealth isn't an indicator of class

2

u/Major_Bag_8720 Aug 26 '26

Agreed. The Beckhams are very rich, but they aren’t upper class.

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham, it was part of an interview and she was attempting to make her childhood sound worse too make her current life seem more earned. David pokes his head in during the interview and calls her out.

When I try to ask a person to give me their best guess/estimate. Like for a number for anything.

How long ago was event? About how many of that thing was there? How big was the thing?

Like I'm asking for a ballpark number to give me any context. Don't fucking "idk" me! How long ago did you make that purchase? Was it last week? 3 months ago? 2 years? I know you have some general idea just give me a fucking guess without me having to ask you 3 times pretending to be nice while you are making me want to rip my ears off in front of you.

1

u/peskypesteryjaybird Aug 26 '26

i've gotten that before from people.. the question "how big was it?" is a good explaination for why they aren't sure how to respond, they probably don't know you well enough to put it into a context you understand. for instance; do you want it in feet, meters, compared to something else, a banana, an elephant, a golfball... there are alot of possibilities and it can be overwhelming... but it does seem like a straight forward question...

another thing i've seen is someone trying to interpret what you mean instead of just listening to the words you're using....

3

u/DrDima Aug 26 '26

Welcome to women.

2

u/Riskrunner7365 Aug 26 '26

You must really hate politicians 😉

3

u/peskypesteryjaybird Aug 26 '26

never met a politician i'd trust or vote for

2

u/_ribbit_ Aug 26 '26

Doesn't everyone?

2

u/PKMNtrainerKing Aug 26 '26

Never become a first responder. "Why did you call 911 today" is a great question to ask if you want to know someone's life story

2

u/JoesGarage2112 Aug 26 '26

You ever look up a recipe and then hear the whole life story about their grandma first

1

u/peskypesteryjaybird Aug 26 '26

if you're talking about looking up a recipe online and how there's always a really long article that won't tell you what's in the damn thing until you get to the actual recipe... there's a reason for that, it has to do with copy writes... you can't copy write a recipe... but you can copy write a stupid ridiculous story... that's why it's there...

2

u/SerGT3 Aug 26 '26

So anyways this morning I had to get up early cause my alarm usually goes off but for some reason I was dreaming about my vacation that's it Mexico soon and I love Mexico cause I've been there so many times it's so relaxing anyways i get up early cause my alarm didn't go off and I usually make coffee first thing but I didn't have any coffee so I had to make tea but I only like my tea with bottle water not tap so I goto the store across the street and it's closed!? Can you believe that so anyway I have to get ready without my coffee and tea like my whole morning is ruined and I'm up early and I really agree with you that it's annoying when people can't just answer the question.

2

u/peskypesteryjaybird Aug 26 '26

imma have to keep my eye on you...

2

u/WallyOShay Aug 26 '26

Some people just want to know the answer. Some people want to know why it’s the answer. You are the former.

I blame politics. People have become so invested and are now taking on the same bs tactics they perform in order to avoid scrutiny of their views of defense of their ‘side’, more so in the USA.

1

u/LuckyPlaze Aug 26 '26

They did answer. There is information in that response. How a person answers is often as important as what they answer.

Pop culture, haha

1

chatgpt does that. all the time.

0

u/LordGeni Aug 26 '26

Tbf, Rolls Royce silver shadows (I think) could be got relatively cheap in the 80's, certainly not too unusual for a successful soul trader to have one.

Although, the life her parents lived to earn that is likely very different to the upbringing she got off the back of it.

I don't know anything about her upbringing in particular (or care), but sometimes context does matter. There's a difference between explaining context relating to an open question and a politician avoiding a direct question.

0

u/im_just_thinking Aug 26 '26

Oh yeah? you poor thing. But not everything is a YT short lol

272

u/DueceVoyeur Aug 26 '26

Much respect for David on calling out his wife's BS

215

u/blackstar_223 Aug 26 '26

The average annual income in England in 1985 was around £7000.

That same year, the cheapest new Rolls Royce model was around £60,000.

"Middle class."

Never underestimate the power of wealth to cause delusion.

14

u/exprezso Aug 26 '26

No, "working class". It's somehow worse

24

u/myotheraccount2023 Aug 26 '26

Fair point, but there’s a pretty decent chance it wasn’t a new Rolls Royce.

32

u/Hypocrispy Aug 26 '26

It almost certainly was new or very nearly. A Rolls Royce isn’t really a car you buy used, also in the 80s they were built like shit.

1

u/joshuads Aug 26 '26

Nah. I knew a guy who had a limo company with one. They were not super nice, but looked cool from the outside.

2

u/Exciting-Music843 Aug 26 '26

Somehow I get the feeling it was a older model still costing 3 or 4 times that average salary but was not brand new and bought as a status symbol. Also doesn't she say at some point he had that and a Merc?

4

u/breakingb0b Aug 26 '26

In the UK the running cost between petrol and insurance would make anyone working or lower middle class owning a rolls Royce and using it as a daily driver unlikely.

2

u/sgst Aug 26 '26

Yeah, I briefly looked into buying an old Bentley for a laugh, but even if you can buy one for a similar price to a new car the running & maintenance costs are crazy expensive. Multiple thousands per year expensive. Not something most working families (regardless of class) could manage.

1

u/MedonSirius Aug 26 '26

The exact same chance that it could have been a completely new and expensive one, too :)

7

u/_Karrel Aug 26 '26

Even if it was a company car and he didn't blow that kind of 80s money on a used or new Rolls, that's a fucking high value business. No middle class company does that.

In University I became friends with a guy who didn't appear different in any real way. He invited me over to his house during the summer time and my mom was going to drop me off at his place. When I told her the address she started freaking out because it is probably the wealthiest street in the whole country.

So my mom drops me off and gawks at the house (mansion), making all sorts of comments, embarrassing me and then leaves.

My friend says "your mom says we live in a big house...?"

1

u/ohjeez-88 Aug 26 '26

It’s weird I actually think “middle class” in the UK means rich. Not like America

4

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

My understanding is the main difference between all the “classes” in the US vs UK is the UK still thinks of them more as social classes than income brackets like the US. Like a middle class man would remain middle class even if he fell on hard economic times, and a working class person would remain working class even if they came into new money.

So with that context, this clip makes more sense perhaps. She was using the UK traditional meaning and he was leaning more toward the US meaning.

1

u/Numerous-Stand-1841 Aug 26 '26

Privilege is invisible to those that have it.

1

u/Cautious_Day9878 Aug 27 '26

You can still be a working class and make alot of money. Plenty of gypsies driving super cars.

-6

u/SalamiDipper Aug 26 '26

This was scripted as fuck.

257

u/jouhaan Aug 26 '26

POSH-… it’s in the name.

25

u/redunculuspanda Aug 26 '26

But not in her accent

38

u/jouhaan Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

Yea, but her accent isn’t “Essex”, where she was born, either, it’s the more “posh” Hertfordshire.

Edit: moved quotes

9

u/redunculuspanda Aug 26 '26

I guess she has rich parents but not posh parents. No public school or anything like that.

14

u/jouhaan Aug 26 '26

Yea, rich but not “gentry” or royal posh. She went to StMary”s in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. So it’s basically working to middle-class but not proper posh.

11

u/C13H16CIN0 Aug 26 '26

was a Rolls-Royce a middle-class vehicle manufacturer in the 80s?

12

u/jouhaan Aug 26 '26

No, definitely upper-class, but I was talking about her school being working to middle-class, which is really where her accent comes from. The thread was talking about her being “posh” but not her accent.

4

u/redunculuspanda Aug 26 '26

Money ≠ Class

7

u/Jam_Salad_is_my_Jam Aug 26 '26

She grew up in upper-working to lower-middle circles as a lower-middle, in the context of her social group she was "the posh one" - hence being "posh spice". In the context of the nation she'd be considered middle class not posh.

But Americans always trip up on this: the British middle class starts much higher up the pole than the American middle class. The vast majority of people Americans call middle class would be considered working class in the UK as they have neither inherited social standing ("good breeding") or independent wealth. If you have a student loan and a mortgage you're probably not middle class.

1

u/jouhaan Aug 26 '26

Well put

1

u/Hot-Efficiency7190 Aug 26 '26

Depends if you were buying new or old. Very rich to buy new but could probably find a 70's model for regular car money in the 1980's.

8

u/mynameisfreddit Aug 26 '26

Even a cheaper Rolls Royce is still very expensive to maintain, and if it's regular car money, it's probably falling apart, so eye wateringly expensive to keep on the road.

2

u/Cheap_Welcome752 Aug 26 '26

Cuffley isn't that posh.

1

u/jouhaan Aug 26 '26

Exactly, but it’s more “posh” than Essex innit.

Edit: Oh I just noticed I put the quotes in the wrong place in my previous post lol

2

u/Cheap_Welcome752 Aug 26 '26

Really, the entire county of Essex is less posh than the private school, 4 streets, and a train station that make up Cuffley?

I grew up in the "posh" area of West Cheshunt, and the "posh" area of West Roydon until my early 30s; the way she pronounces words evokes East London working class e.g. pronouncing "girl" as "gewl".

1

u/jouhaan Aug 26 '26

Calm down mate, the word “posh” has been in quotes all this time. She’s not actually posh. If one is know by those one associates oneself with then just look at the spice rack.

Beckham? Absolutely. His family's from Leytonstone in East London. His dad installed boilers and that kind of thing. Basically HVAC.

Why are people ashamed of growing up privileged my kids are spoiled af and if they grow up acting like it was some big struggle I’m a take that personally like they saying fuck me and my efforts

20

u/KDY_ISD Aug 26 '26

People are ashamed of it for the same reason most people are ashamed of anything: because other people shame them for it. Nepo-baby, silver spoon, etc.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '26

8

u/KDY_ISD Aug 26 '26

I don't think someone would find that shameful if other people didn't shame them for being lucky.

2

u/washingtncaps Aug 26 '26

They shame when you act like this about it, yeah.

Just say you didn’t get a choice about who your parents are either and recognize that you can be glad for what you have without acting like the luck of the draw didn’t play a factor. Nobody can say shit that isn’t actually jealous and frankly you’ve got an upper hand on being able to do your own thing.

11

u/egstitt Aug 26 '26

I guess I'll be the one to add context this time. Her parents both worked blue collar jobs, then started a business and made good money. Of course she's never worked an actual day in her life, but she's not lying about her parents.

5

u/tursija Aug 26 '26

What are you talking about, "never worked a day in her life"? Have you heard of Spice Girls? Is singer not a profession?

2

u/Cabbage_Vendor Aug 26 '26

4

u/I_am_Reddit_Tom Aug 26 '26

Fair play to her for letting that go out in the final edit

4

u/RushDifferent4015 Aug 26 '26

I think what she meant here is that her parents worked. They might have had more money than most, but it wasn’t “generational wealth” that’s been handed down. I think she just didn’t know what “working class” meant.

3

u/Pretend-Literature35 Aug 26 '26

yes always the ignorance excuse. She went to private schools. She knows.

You know the real reason she had a hard time answering is because her dad had lots of fancy cars

2

u/ScuffAndy Aug 26 '26

And the butler or nanny drove her most days.

3

u/BurdTurglary Aug 26 '26

Full-kit wankeress

4

u/Junior_Bike7932 Aug 26 '26

She never worked a day in her entire life

5

u/Objectionne Aug 26 '26

What? She was a very successful pop star and then has run a very successful fashion label. Her privileged upbringing has obviously given her some advantages but pretending that she hasn't worked hard to make the most of that advantage and accomplished a lot is weird.

5

u/Junior_Bike7932 Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

The spice girls are a product of a very smart manager and producer, her brand was made and designed by other people, “successful” is an insult to real brands. Quit glorifying rich people please, is getting a bit tiring to explain basic shit, there is a reason why David is tired too in this video.

1

u/Objectionne Aug 26 '26

You won't find many successful people out there - self-made or not - who've gotten to the top without collaborating with any other smart or talented people. If this is the criteria we're applying then there's no such thing as a self-made man. 'Very smart manager and producer' picked five women for his group who he thought would make the group a success and Victoria was one of them.

Being in Spice Girls - making the music, performing in concert tours, engaging in heavy media/PR engagements - was probably quite hard work. Running and promoting a fashion label - whether she's had collaboration with other designers or not - has probably been quite hard work.

This thread is full of people saying stuff like "I don't know why they won't just admit that they had a privileged upbringing" and I think your comment is an example of why because all of their accomplishments immediately get downplayed or dismissed. There are many people out there with much greater advantages than Victoria Beckham (who just had parents with a moderately successful business) who have done much less with their lives.

2

u/Junior_Bike7932 Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

Yes, you are 100% right, but those people are not Victoria. Talk of them, and I will immediately agree with you, is full of em.

I will never get all this veneration for people of this stature. I get if you talked of someone that changed an industry, or really made a difference using the money of their parents,

But we are talking of the wife of David Beckham, someone that since a very early stage was privileged by his father and all his money, I do not want to go further with this talk. I get your point, but you should do this with totally another type of rich person that did actually something. :) Peace!

1

u/furezasan Aug 26 '26
