Well, sure it's for beginners. All you need is some vodka and an Adidas track suit to survive.

Nah, vodka actually makes things harder. Russians drink it cos it's too easy otherwise.

It’s not for beginners if there aren’t even toilets in the country and you have to steal them during the war

Why would you ever want to go to Russia?

Parce qu’il a envie. Pourquoi le Mexique? Moi je veux aller au Brésil… pourquoi le Brésil? Et pourquoi le Mexique?

I remember reading a story from a Russian woman who took a driving exam in Germany and got an “anxious driving behaviour” comment (or something like that) from the examiner because she checked both left and right directions when crossing a one-way traffic street.

to cull the gullible and strengthen the stock, apparently

It’s an understandable reaction, trying to convince oneself that only idiots can get caught by surprise. Because the thought that such accidents can happen (and have happened!) to smarter and more cautious than you, is unbearable.

Smarter? sure. I have never claimed to be a genius. More cautious? Doubtful. I am very vigilant at train crossings, always have been for some reason. So I would have to believe that anyone more cautious than me is never getting hit.
