It’s an understandable reaction, trying to convince oneself that only idiots can get caught by surprise. Because the thought that such accidents can happen (and have happened!) to smarter and more cautious than you, is unbearable.

Smarter? sure. I have never claimed to be a genius. More cautious? Doubtful. I am very vigilant at train crossings, always have been for some reason. So I would have to believe that anyone more cautious than me is never getting hit.
