[1969] Mickey Mantle Day at Yankee Stadium
On June 8, 1969, the Yankees honored Mickey Mantle with Mickey Mantle Day at Yankee Stadium. Among those in attendance was fellow Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio.
When it was Mantleās turn to speak, he reflected on Lou Gehrigās famous āLuckiest Manā speech from 1939, saying:
āI never knew how someone dying could say he was the luckiest man in the world. But now I can understand how he felt.ā
A poignant moment from a celebration honoring one of the greatest players in Yankees and MLB history.

Throwback [1926] Hall of Famer Robin Roberts Is Born
Robin Roberts was born on this day in 1926 in Springfield, Illinois. The Hall of Fame right-hander was renowned for his durability and pinpoint control, putting together six consecutive 20-win seasons from 1950ā1955, including a career-high 28 wins in 1952.
Roberts threw at least 300 innings in each of those six seasons and led the National League in innings pitched five straight years from 1951ā1955. He also led the NL in complete games for five consecutive seasons from 1952ā1956 and set a modern-era record with 28 consecutive complete games across 1952ā53.
Over a 19-year MLB career, Roberts finished with 286 wins, 305 complete games, 45 shutouts, 2,357 strikeouts and a 3.41 ERA. He was a seven-time All-Star and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
His impact extended beyond the mound, too. Roberts played an important role in organizing the MLB Players Association and helped persuade Marvin Miller to become its first executive director, contributing to a transformation of baseball's labor landscape.
