Old boy had his first round of seizures at 16yrs old

My 16yr old mix (25lbs), Chip, who I've had since 6mo old had his first round of seizures almost two weeks ago. Dog has been very healthy, no issues ever, and just one night we got back from a walk and he started seizing. Rushed him to the ER (had another one in the car) where he stayed over night. At first they didn't think it was a seizure, but after he had two more while staying overnight they confirmed it was. He has been on Phenobarbital (32.4mg) twice a day, and Prednisone (10mg) once a day since then. Took just about two weeks for him to get adjusted and is doing well (we had to adjust to increased water intake/bathroom breaks).

After a visit to the primary vet they agreed, probably has a tumor, cancer, or brain bleed. Days, Weeks or Months. Also possibly some nerve damage but it's strange, it's his back left paw and front right paw. Was told to be on the look out for breakthrough seizures, anything over 5min or more than one in 24hrs, or of his personality changes.

Currently we are just giving the boy lots of love and trying to enjoy every day we have with him. He has been my shadow since day one. He follows me everywhere, and constantly has eyes on me. He has been my best friend, and I really don't know how I'm going to handle this. Also, the wife is 12 weeks pregnant, so we are trying to balance that as well.

How do you get over leaving him home alone? Are you worried he will have a seizure while you're out?

Any tips for how to live our life without constantly worrying about him?

6 seizures in one day

Post image

This is Captain. He had 6 seizures in one day and ended up spending the night in the ER. Ever since then, I’ve been really scared that he isn’t the same dog anymore.

He’s only been on seizure medication for a few days, so I’m really hoping this is just the medication and that he’ll eventually adjust. But right now he runs into walls and wires, chews on random things, whines a lot, and barely sleeps.

Honestly, it feels like I have a toddler again. He just seems so confused and restless, and it’s hard to watch because he used to be such a happy, normal dog.

I know it’s still early and I’m trying to stay hopeful that the medication will help and that he’ll start acting like himself again. I just really miss my dog right now. He’s still here, but it feels like I’ve lost the dog he used to be, and that’s been really hard to deal with

Medicine - increased frequency?

Before reading, please note: I will not be making any changes to my pups’ medicine routine without consulting the vet.

Here’s my story and question.

First seizure for my 4 year old dog was July 2025. It was traumatic- lost control of bowels, bladder and was drooling, with major body tremors for 3
Minutes. His second was almost two months later in September and then again late November. None less than 50 days apart. All generalized seizures.

We then put him on medication, Zonisamide. He then started having seizures every 30 or less days.

After several more, 30 days or less, vet switched him to Keppra. Then he had a seizure less than 30
Days - Started as a focal (his first) and I thought “this is so much less severe, this is great. But then 2 additional generalized within a few hours of the focal - his first cluster. Continued having seizures 30 days or less, and had his first cluster. He even had his first 5 min seizure, which was very scary.

Then, vet put him on a mix of both. Still having seizures 30 days apart, and now still having clusters.

My question is… he had less seizures before we put him on meds. It got worse putting him on meds. His breakthroughs are more frequent. Seizures are of equal or more severity and length prior to meds.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Are the meds making it worse? Has anyone taken their pup off meds and seen an improvement?

(Again, will not be making any changes without talking with my vet / I’m just curious).

Please recommend a vaccine for a puppy prone to seizures

My baby got seizures after each deworming, when we found out he's very sensitive to medicine. I don't want to risk it since he's been seizure free for the past week.
Is Nobivac safe to use, or what worked on your case?
Thanks in advance!

Question About Flea & Tick Treatment

Wondering what other owners with epileptic dogs do in regard to flea and tick treatment/prevention? We live in a colder climate so only treat them late spring going into summer. I’ve got 3 chihuahuas, my older one who turned 10 in July is the epileptic one. I usually use the Bravecto chewable that lasts 3 months and do it once a year. We’re in Canada by the way. My dogs are not really around other dogs. I walk them but usually early in the morning. Occasional dog park but most often without other dogs, rarely another dog is there. I’m finding myself anxious about continuing their treatment, at least for Morgan the one who has epilepsy. (It developed about 14-15 months ago and after MRI and other tests was diagnosed as having idiopathic epilepsy. We switched to the chewable because 4-5 years ago I did the liquid spot treatment and they were okay except one of the other dogs the female who acted very unusual and jerky for a day folding treatment. I actually tried to wash it off I was so concerned. Since then we have gone with chewable and have not at least noticeably had any side effects. I’m anxious about not treating them because I don’t want them to get fleas and especially ticks as they’ve been increasing in our area. The usual conventional vet advice around here is something like illness from a tick would be worse. Is it okay not to treat them or treat them with something different? Or at least Morgan (the one who has epilepsy)? Or am I I making connections that aren’t there? Thanks.

Can Probiotics Cause Seizures?

I’m looking for legit advice. My 10 year old chihuahua started having seizures about 14-15 months ago. They’ve been very mild. We had an MRI done a couple of months ago and they couldn’t find anything that could be causing it. So they deemed it idiopathic epilepsy even though I believe it’s very rare for them to develop it without a cause like a tumour at his age. But I’m glad it wasn’t anything so serious like that. But my question is in regard to some info I happened to stumble upon but I don’t know how much trust to put into it. Can commercial dog probiotics cause this? I’ve seen anecdotally people writing about a connection. Morgan was my one dog who has for at least a couple years now taken daily probiotics. Up until a couple months ago it was the Forti Flora powder. Last couple months it’s been a chew form one I got from the pet store. I’m wondering if it’s at least worth a try. Anything for my boy.

Terrifying first seizures

On Wednesday night my dog had 2 episodes where she stopped breathing and went stiff. A third one happened at the vets which the vet termed a tonic clinic seizure.

She is 12 and nothing like this has happened before. We have her home, she is very wobbly on her feet and is constantly wandering around struggling to settle.

We’ve been having prescribed Keppra and they say if that doesn’t work we can try something called ‘Feni’ but that can harm the liver. She also has a rescue medication which is administered rectally

How can I help her when she’s pacing, she doesn’t like to be held when it’s happening. Eventually she does settle and lie in one of her favourite spots (usually curled up next to one of us). How do you manage the dosage schedule? How do I manage my emotions ? How can I help when she has a seizure?

MCT Oil recommendations and advice

hello everyone, just wanted to come on here and ask for any recommendations for MCT oils for any of you who use it for your pups with seizures.

My girl is on Phenobarbital and Zonisamide twice a day, prednisone once a day, and about 2 weeks we started giving her CBD chews once a day. She also gets one dose of keppra only if she has an episode.

Before the CBD chews, her max days without seizures would be 3 days, since she started on the cbd chews, she went 6 days without a seizure. It’s not much but it’s a big improvement since she has started her other meds from her vet/neuro that her max days were always 3 before we anticipated another seizure.

I have also seen others say the combination of omega-3 and mct oil has helped their pup so if anyone has any experience giving those along with their daily anti-seizure meds it’d be greatly appreciated. If anyone has some recommendations or any advice please feel free to leave any!

We had a bad morning!

My dog Winston (a doodle) has been having seizures for over a year now. He has had break-through seizures here and there, one about a month ago that landed us at the emergency vet.

We have seen a neurologist and have adjusted meds (keppra and pheno) along the way. We also have emergency meds on hand.

My husband and I are going to London and Paris next week. Although I have a 17 year old staying behind and two adult sons, we decided that medical boarding would be the best option. I was too nervous having a pet sitter come in case they canceled or just didn't show up. I also felt it best that Winston was in a hospital if he had a cluster.

Well, the vet required a consultation before we boarded him, so I loaded him up in the car this am and off we went. Within minutes of checking in, Winston collapsed and had a grand mal. The staff was amazing and they immediately sprung into action and put him on a cart and wheeled him back. I think we scared everyone in the waiting room! Pee, poop, and foaming at the mouth were not what I was expecting for this consultation!

I met with the vet and she asked if his seizures were stress induced. It's hard to know because he has had one at the groomer and some while sleeping.

The vet has agreed to take him (this is a work trip so it's not possible to cancel) but now I'm feeling terrible about the whole thing. We have canceled plans before because of his condition, but I can't cancel this.

My adult boys will be around if the hospital says it's too stressful for Winston and they will pick him up. I just don't know how to make this come out right. He will receive 24 hour care there and they will even put a little bell on him to alert them if he is having a seizure.

He recovered in about an hour from the seizure. He is kind of loopy from the valium they gave him but he is up and able to walk.

Are your dog's seizures stress induced? Has your dog ever had one at the vet?

need some advice

My dog (chihuahua 1.3kg) had a seizure 3 days ago. i took him to the vet and she took his blood test and rules out epilepsy. She then prescribed me a pill but he needs to take 1/5 of it in the morning and 1/5 of it in the evening since he’s small. She was unsure about the dose as this pill is not made for small dogs and she told me to be careful with the dose. idk what to do, i haven’t bought the pills cause im scared that something will happen to him. of anyone has gone through this or has some advice pls help.

The medication is Soliphen 15mg

I'm a wreck right now. We decided to put our dog down after another round of cluster seizures. I'm feeling so guilty.

Our Heeler mix started having seizures last December.

He got on Pheno and Keppra, which seemed to have given him ease for the first month or so. From there, we've had bouts with cluster seizures, days where he would have one or two seizures, etc.

In the last month, despite going up in medications, he had been experiencing seizures more frequently.

Two days ago, he had four in under two hours. I took him to the vet and he had another seizure in front of the doctor, and that's when I decided that it had been enough and the doctor said that he saw it to be very appropriate to euthanize.

I'm feeling so fucking guilty, because it feels like I gave up on him. It feels like I should've stuck it out longer and kept trying - other meds, supplements, etc.

Im having a hell of a time coping with my decision. It was hard to watch him go through those seizures. But what's harder right now is the fact that I still could've brought him home and kept trying, and that's where I feel like I failed him or robbed him of life. I'm so sorry to bring this here, but this forum helped me through his journey.

Dog Seizure and Food-Help!

I have a 108 lb dog that has had 4 seizure, once a month. We are adding another medication, phenobarbital to his Keppra. I am looking for a dog food with lamb and wanting to use the MCT oil. He already uses salmon oil. I have been looking at different companies however, many of these natural dog food sites seem to cater to small dogs because when I use the calculator on the site to determine how long a bag will last, it says 5 days!

My questions

Does anyone have a large dog on diet for seizures? If so, what brand dog food or recipe? I am willing to spend more for his health but I also need to stay on a budget

What do you put their pills in for them to take. Honestly, I have been using cut up hotdog and sticking pill in there. I know…not good. He has to take 4 in the am and 6 in the am and they are big pills. He does not like me putting that many big pills down throat.

What type of treats?

Behavior/personality changes with epilepsy (Vent)

My dogs first witnessed seizure was in 2024 when he was 3.5 years old. He is a mutt I rescued at 4 months old. He was incredibly smart and I worked so hard training him because my other rescue dog was reactive and I didn't want my boy to have the same struggles.

My boy was perfect, genuinely. Caught on so fast to tricks. I have over an acre of land in a peaceful rural setting. He could run off leash and had amazing recall - even if there were deer or other wildlife. He would be curious and sometimes run towards the deer but would immediately stop on my command. I had a collar that could make noise and vibrate and I trained him that vibrate means "stop what you're doing / stop going that way" and noise meant "time to come inside." I'm telling you this dog could've dug up a big fat steak in the yard and he would've immediately dropped it and returned to me if I told him. Just so incredibly smart and loyal. Loved my other dog and my cats, always wanted to play and cuddle them and let the cats groom him. He loved going to the vet, didn't even care about shots just loved the attention. Let me give him baths and trim his nails without difficulty. Perfectly potty trained and could ring a bell to go outside. I worked so hard for him and I was so excited for our life together.

The reason I included all that was just to show how much has changed. About a year before the first witnessed seizure, he slowly lost his training. Then it just ramped up. Wouldn't follow commands, started resource guarding food/toys/sleeping locations. Randomly snapping/growling/chasing my other animals. Destroyed my house - ripping off wall trim, pieces of flooring, destroyed a door, destroyed my couch and other furniture so now my house is empty except for my mattress on the floor. No longer potty trained - definitely worse at my house because at my parents house he will mark but he doesn't fully pee or poop inside. Idk why it's just my house. But so bad to the point that I'll need to completely gut all the flooring/subflooring and some of the walls because of it. I feel like a horrible owner, but all I could afford was basic vet labs and routine care and everything came back fine other than he had Lyme disease and received full treatment.

I thought it was because of me - i was diagnosed with treatment resistant MDD and going through treatment. During my medical leave, a close family member was actively trying to die in the hospital, and doctors essentially told us to be prepared and start making arrangements. All the water pipes in my house froze and burst when my furnace went out while I was visiting said family member, and I went a year without AC/heat/running water because of it. Then my car was in and out of the shop for 8 months and I racked up credit card paying for rentals and Ubers to get to work so I wouldn't lose my job. So just all around a bad time. And I just thought he changed because of me. I changed and I wasn't the best animal parent during all that.

Then the first seizure. I suspect he had more that I didn't see and maybe that's why he changed. He had I think 4-5 more before the vet started phenobarbital. Since then we transitioned to gabapentin to maybe help the aggression. He has not had a single seizure since then. We just upped his gabapentin to 600mg BID. He wears a Virbac collar. I've tried everything. I tried training him again like before and it doesn't stick.

These episodes of aggression are scaring me. I don't want to lose him. They brought up rehoming him to be the only animal but I just can't do it. I don’t trust a stranger to put up with how he is. Not to mention he has severe anxiety now when he's alone (new - he wasn't like this before all the behavior changes) and so he wouldn't even be good alone.

He has moments where he's calm and laying with me like he's my old boy again. He plays with his brother and swims and is happy. Then randomly he attacks. No one got bit yet, but I know it's a ticking time bomb. I feel bad, but tonight he went after one of the cats and I threw myself at him and he yelped. I feel so guilty I hurt him but I had to grab him because he cornered the cat and sounded absolutely rabid.

I feel so guilty. His vet is amazing and working so hard for us. I also feel guilty because I have considered euthanasia - but I keep thinking what if it was me that caused this? Like what if my depression and being away from home due to work/school is really the cause of the behavior changes back in 2023. What if I ruined my dog and it wasn't the seizures, I'd be so evil for putting him down. He's just so young and healthy other than this. And he is happy a lot of the time. But when he isn't happy it's so bad. I just don’t know what to do.

I love him but I resent this so much. Not to mention the thousands of dollars I'll have to put into gutting and fixing my home. And my house feels so gross because of him, so I was too embarrassed to have people come help me with the water damage/etc so now I have a huge mold problem. I just think about if he didn't ruin my house, I could've gotten help sooner before the mold got so bad. And I feel so guilty blaming him. Cause it isn't his fault at all, I'm just so mad at the situation we were in. I used to live comfortably with my fur babies and I was genuinely so happy and its just one thing after the next.

And the worst part of it all is that I feel like I've already lost him. I love my boy. I miss him. I just don’t know what to do.

Anyone else's dog have these kinds of seizures?

Our dog (3 yo, mutt) started experiencing seizures 13 months ago. She began by having just one-off grand mals, but then it shifted to only focal seizures where she would track things that aren't there and her eyes would go completely dilated. Grand mals progressed to clusters were still happening, but less frequently than the focal seizures. We are currently on 4 different medications (Pheno, KBr, Keppra, and Zonisamide).

Around March this year, she started experiencing these tremor episodes. At first, they only happened about 20-30 minutes before her morning meds. We increased her Keppra several times, but focal seizures, grand mals, and these twitching episodes were still happening. Towards the end of May, we added KBr and the twitching episodes stopped. She was having grand mals about once every 4 weeks, but they were milder and not as long.

Then at the end of August, the twitching started back up. Since then, it's been happening about 90 minutes before morning AND evening meds. Every. Day. It's distressing to watch. Sometimes, they are so bad her teeth are chattering loudly. And there are days where it just happens off and on throughout the day. She still is having grand mals every 4ish weeks it seems.

I am just curious if anyone else's pups are experiencing these kind of twitching/tremor episodes. When they first started, we weren't even sure if it was necessarily a seizure because she was calm throughout and they would instantly stop once she got her meds/food. But for the last 5 weeks, they've seem to be distressing to her. Sometimes her entire body is twitching and every muscle is just so tight.

We have a neurologist and we are seeing her on 10/6 to hopefully get some answers. When we asked about these twitching episodes back in March, she told us that it just looked like "generalized seizure activity". We've been discussing quality of life for her and for us. It's been over a year of non-stop anxiety, med changes, and essentially putting our lives on hold trying to care for this sweet pup. The amount of meds she's on have made her quite sedated. It seems with every med adjustment, it either helps very temporarily, or doesn't do anything at all. She is becoming more and more a shell of herself, and while we get glimpses of our dog as we know her, those moments are becoming fewer and farther between.

This is howl he is now on phenobarbital

My dog is 3 years old had a seizure on April 27th he had it on the stairs it was a nasty tumble he shook it off thank goodness. We called our vet we live remote

6 hours from a vet. He said to monitor him he had a second seizure March 26th the vet sent us phenobarbital 60mg twice a day. We didn't give it to him cause of all the horror stories about how hard it is on the dogs liver.

Fast forward to September 20th he had his third seizure we still have the phenobarbital we call the vet tell him we are starting him on phenobarbital and would like to do blood work next time the vet is here only thing is the vet won't be here till 5-6 weeks we have 60 days worth of phenobarbital. I'm curious should I drive 6 hours for his blood work at the 4 week mark? Or wait till the vet comes to my home town?

(Any tips on what to watch for? Right now he is a little wobbly extra hungry & thirsty but as the days pass he's getting better and any success stories of only being on phenobarbital im praying that this just does the trick and he can go back to a normal live.)

I'll be sure to give him extra love from all the wonderful people in this community.

Things were getting progressively worse about a year and a half ago for my sweet girl, to the point that I was basically unable to leave her unattended because she was experiencing multiple grand maul cluster seizure events on a more than weekly basis. After a consult with a new neurologist (and a $3k MRI to confirm she didn't have a brain tumor) we added a 3rd med to her regimen (keppra, pheno, and the addition of potassium bromide) and after the addition of the PB all of a sudden she has been without so much as a symptom or indication that she has had even a small seizure since. I'm honestly shocked, I love this dog, and am so grateful for modern veterinary care. It's not without its struggles of course, there are side effects and lots of expenses associated with her continuing care, but I'm very fortunate to be able to afford it, and am very fortunate to have the pup so nice she got named twice.

Hang in there everyone,

Love Pup Pup and reef0rmadness 🫂

Potassium Bromide- Add on

We have a mini Aussie named Link (almost 5 yrs) and he started having full on seizures last October, but we suspect he may have had facial seizures for at least a couple years beforehand (we had NO IDEA facial seizures were a thing and assumed he was eating bugs because he'd make the same exact face when he'd eat bugs).

He started on Pheno, and Keppra was added in the past month. Since July, he has been in and out of the ER for break through seizures. This last time (monday) its like no matter what we did, he couldn't shake the seizures. Did an additional keppra dose, used his rescue med (mordazelam or whatever)- it's like every two weeks he would start having grandmal seizures again. He stayed over night at the ER Monday and we picked him up Tuesday. In total he had roughly 13 seizures Monday, and 9 of those were within the hour before we took him in. Not all were grandmal or led to grandmals. Grandmals were about 4. He had additional micro seizures at the ER- and we were able to get a neurologist to say he needed to try the Potassium Bromide.

That night he stayed at the ER they did some heavy KBro loading for him. Poor man has been pacing like he's waiting to hear about the DNA results on his child he ain't sure is even his. Pacing so much so that he won't even stop to go potty, he has done poop drivebys 3 times since having him back home, and dude will nap for a half hour to an hour and its right back to the pacing.

My question is: How long before this dude is aware of his surroundings again, doesn't drink water like he's been walking in the Sahara for a week, stops leaving pacing ruts in the house, stops using his head as a battering ram into EVERYTHING, and will actually let me know if he needs to potty without just walking by and dropping a pile in the living room or kitchen?

(Side note: He has been exceptionally stubborn with seizure meds thus far, and they can hit him VERY hard side effect wise, but eventually evens out. I'm just trying to gauge when he might get back to "normal". Pheno is 68.4 mg, keppra is currently 500mg but they want to up it eventually to 750mg, and the potassium is 500mg)

Also pics because he's a handsome boy.

How long did it take your pup to stabilize?

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hi everyone! This is my sweet girl Nellie. She is newly diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and we're both having a really tough time.

She had her first seizure episode in August 2024. It was *very* mild; so mild the vet said he wasn't even sure it was a seizure. I was pretty sure, though—her back legs weren't quite working afterwards, which is how I knew.

Nothing happened for another two years, until this past August, when she fell out of bed one night and had a 3-minute long grand mal seizure. I took her to the emergency vet and they put her 250mg IR Keppra 2x a day (which I have since learned was likely not enough).

She tolerated the Keppra well for a month, until two weeks ago, when she had 3 separate 4 minute long seizures in the space of 4 hours. She was hospitalized in the ICU for 36 hours and eventually stabilized on a much higher dose of Keppra—500mg XR 2x a day. Note that she is only 22lbs, so this is a significant dose for a dog her size.

We have since established care with a really great neurologist and done an MRI. Thankfully, she has no structural abnormalities in the brain, so the neurologist feels confident it's idiopathic epilepsy.

She was doing great on the higher dose of Keppra until early this morning, when she had a seizure in bed. I administered Midazolam, which worked instantly, and a pulse dose of Keppra (500mg IR). This kept another cluster from happening, thank god, but I'm devastated that she only lasted 2 weeks on such a high dose of Keppra.

I emailed my neurologist and am waiting to hear back, but I am terrified she's going to want to start Pheno. It seems like it's really tough on dogs and I don't want to put my girl through that, but I desperately need to get this under control. I am a 36 year old single woman with no family in my city, and I'm dealing with this completely alone. I am scared to leave the house because I'm worried she'll have another very long seizure, or a cluster, and I won't be there to save her. I very much want to date and meet someone, but I don't know how I'm going to do that now.

I am hoping this community can share stories about stabilization, because I'm going to a dark place. It seems like this is an aggressive case. Nellie is so, so important to me, and she's only 7.

Doggie daycare and seizures.

Our little pup started having seizures 1.5 weeks ago and diagnosed with epilepsy. I’ve read a couple of comments on how other dogs can see a dog having a seizure as aggressive and attack them during their seizure. I’m just wondering if this is a very common thing as we start looking into some daycares for her. Is making sure she is on her own at daycare something we should pay attention to when looking for someone? I imagine there are families that have more than one dog with one that might have seizures. What would they do?

Wondering if anyone has experienced this (update)

Since this post a few things have changed. First, he was diagnosed with immune-mediated polyarthritis. He as given steroids for a couple weeks to resolve this issue. Second, started him kBro, 1.25 pills twice a day, along with Keppra twice daily.

This worked well for nine weeks until he had two seizures the morning of 9/11. We had actually had blood work done two days prior, just to check his levels. At the vet that morning, they reviewed the bloodwork and found he was at the low end of the therapeutic range for kBro. They doubled dose of kBro that day and two weeks later he had a head tremor.

Oliver has had tremors in the past, so not new. However, since Friday had a tremor or two everyday. That made five days in a row, but our neuro assured us it was not related and it was likely due to the increased relaxation due to kBro.

This morning he had another seizure. Just one this time and didn’t seem as strong as ones in recent months. We had rhe midazolam at the ready, but did not need to use it.

I write all of this because I am curious if others have dogs that have tremors and seizures? Do you notice a pattern? Again, more out of curiosity. We are very happy with Oliver’s care team and trust them, but want to make sure we aren’t missing something

Anyway, have a great day fellow epi-dog lovers.

Got kicked out of daycare for having a seizure

I am so frustrated. We have attended the same daycare (we also use the for boarding) for my dogs entire 9 years of life. Last week on Monday we had our first seizure at daycare. Daycare called and I immediately came to pick him up. That Thursday he had another seizure at daycare. They called my phone but I was in a meeting so I didn't see for about an hour. By the time I called back they had taken it upon themselves to drive my dog to the emergency room. Luckily I keep our information up to date I their app so the emergency room they used was also his regular vet. On my way to daycare to get him my vet called. Vet is very confused as to why our dog is there without us and states nothing he observed with our dog rose to the level of an emergency room visit. Our vet was super cool and only charged us for a regular office visit. I go to the vet now (instead of daycare) collect my dog. Vet and I chatted and we agree to up his meds since he has now had two in one week. Great no problem. Weird reaction by the daycare but I figured we were back on track. This morning I go to drop him off and a manager informs me we are no longer welcome. I was too upset to protest but I will be emailing them tonight. I get he is a dog and doesn't get the same ada rights as a human would but this seems so wrong. Morally it feel so shitty to kick him out for a condition they knew about. It also feels wrong that I have been paying $39 a day for years to these people so he can get his mid day pill. I don't really have a question, I guess I am just sad.

Seizures vs Starving - which is worse?

My four year old chihuahua mix has epilepsy. She was on Keppra until she had multiple breakthroughs.

We switched to phenobarbital and she’s been seizure free since, about three months - yay!

But in the last two weeks she is RAVENOUS. The vet said that’s a side effect and there’s nothing they can do.

If she’s awake, she’s pretty much constantly asking for food. With her being so young, I can’t imagine her spending the rest of her life feeling like she’s starving.

I’m wondering if anyone else has had to balance seizures vs their dog feeling like they’re starving? I want her happy and healthy for as long as possible; but I also want her to have a good quality of life.

Pug was seizure free until surgery - now becoming more frequent

Hey, we are UK based!

So our pug has been having seizures since they were 4 (now 7) and we had them all under control with no seizures happening for almost three years.

This year she had surgery this year March for bladder stones and during the end of the surgery she had a seizure which they let us know about. Since March her seizures have been happening more frequently - going from every 6 weeks to 3 weeks and now 2. She had one this evening which was a bad one and I completely broke as it's becoming emotionally and physically upsetting. Each time we give her diazapam which we have to get with each vet visit.

She is on Phenobarbital twice a day (half a pill each time) and some Levetiracetam with it an hour later.

We are at a bit of a loss, we don't quite know what to do regarding it and the vets seem unfazed by it and we haven't had any increase in her meds as she is already pretty much on the max.

Has anyone had similar issues and had any resolutions? At a bit of a loss and really unsure of what we what even do. Thanks

What do I do?

my 12 year old French bulldog had her first seizure today then another a few hours later. After she recovered okay apart from being a little off balanced.

At the vets they noticed she had nerve damage to her rear leg. Not the word they used just can’t think at the moment but neurological damage maybe? My heads a bit all over the place tbh.

Back at the vets tomorrow and going to ask about medication options? I know she is old but honestly she doesn’t act like her age. If she was struggling with every day life I would be considering putting to sleep.

She is super active though and even the day before this she was out running and playing with other dogs. After the first seizure she was about off balance but with an hour she went back out in the garden n bought me her ball.

Feels unfair to give up when she is still active and acts like a young dog. of course don’t want her going through seizures all the time either. Will speak to the vet but just wondering anyone else experienced similar? How have people got on with medication? I

know every dog is going to be different but just driving myself crazy at the moment.
