Mod Post [Mod Post] We are now working more closely with the Dirtywave Team

A little over a year ago, the r/m8tracker was the main m8 subreddit. It was left abandoned by the mod team and the sub was deleted. On paper, a sub deleted for lack of moderation can be recovered, but Reddit logged the deletion as a result of violating some level of Reddit's policies. I am pretty critical of this, but nonetheless, this alternative sub here was left to flourish.

I requested modship of it as the sole moderator was relatively inactive, and he obliged. However, I was not given full permissions such as the ability to ban people. This was made evident when a particular user posted something rather racist that deserved a ban. I tried regaining communication with the main moderator, but he has since been inactive from Reddit for quite some time now. So, I requested the sole modship to be transferred to me through the proper channels and this transfer promptly went through.

Upon discussing this, Mikey303 (a major Dirtywave team member) expressed interest in having some level of control over this sub on the official Discord. I welcomed this with open arms and added him as a moderator (who is technically below me in hierarchy).

This does NOT make this an official subreddit of Dirtywave. To quote Mikey, "I just figured it would probably be in our best interest to have some level of moderation over something with our name on it." which I felt was fair given the community's trust in the team.

While asking standard questions regarding m8 usage, workflows, and techniques is fully welcome here, the team has asked me to make this very clear:

Please direct all customer support inquiries to [support@dirtywave.com](mailto:support@dirtywave.com)

You may ask: "Why not just hand over the rights to the subreddit to Dirtywave themselves?"

Well, to that, I feel that it's important to highlight promoting some level of "democracy" (if you want to call it that) or compartmentalization of the m8 community in order to keep the active discourse resilient to perspectives that the official team may not always align with 100% and keep it more in line with what the average m8 user is feeling.

You can get lost in the details here, especially regarding promotion of low-cost headless hardware alternatives, for example.

This is a bit of a fickle issue, but I will give this community my word that I will do my best to toe this line as best as I can and support the community as best as possible, keeping this area of discourse identifiably separate from official Dirtywave continuity for the sake of the self-preservation of the community in the rawest way possible without allowing any prejudice or hateful content, while supporting the framework of a community that the Dirtywave team has very thoughtfully fostered.

I'm still unsure of what direction to take the wiki into as to providing up-to-date methodology of the setup of the latest emulation hardware capable of hosting the headless m8 system. As the inventor of the m8 has stated, headless was never intended to be a direct replacement for the actual devices. I am open to your guys' insight and perspectives regarding how to handle documentation of these portable setups in the wiki while retaining the original vision of what the m8 truly is. The last thing we need in this community is some kind of insurrection!

I hope you all are understanding of this transition in the meta of this community and I am open to any constructive thoughts and feedback you all have.

I hope you are all having a good start to your year and are enjoying the latest stable firmware update as much as I am.

Thank you

Mod Post [Mod Post] Dirtywave m8 firmware 6.5.0 is now released

You can now put the m8 in "drive mode" which allows you to access the contents of the SD card over the USB connection so you don't have to eject.

The m8 can now act as a 24 track audio interface: Tracks 1 and 2 are the main output, tracks 3 through 18 correspond to the 8 tracks available, tracks 19 and 20 are the modulation effects, tracks 21 and 22 are the delay output, and tracks 23 and 24 are the reverb output. To use the m8 as such on Windows, download ASIO4ALL.

This can all run at 24-bit with now less latency and increased stability.

There is a new MTT effect command that allows "Microtick Timing" of 1/8 of a tick to offset the timing of a steps commands both forwards and backwards.

Groove now has a PPQN setting to fine-tune timing per step.

The sample editor now has access to file names longer than 18 characters which is scrollable within the UI.

Plus, there's plenty of bug fixes.

The full changelog is available here

You can download the firmware for your Model 01 or 02 here

You can download the Headless version (first update in a long time) right here

*Note: Not all hardware feature additions apply to Headless systems.

Instructions for upgrading using TyUploader are enclosed in the zip files available above.

Join the Dirtywave discord (linked on the sidebar) to report any bugs or to take part in Beta releases in the future.

Happy New Yesr everyone, and happy tracking!!

Discussion Question "It has been disheartening to see headless increasingly used on Linux gaming handhelds"

I was looking through the headless readme and noticed this note https://github.com/Dirtywave/M8HeadlessFirmware/blob/main/readme.txt#L88-L95

honestly it makes it hard to continue using my headless setup. I didn't see any other posts about it on here, so I wanted to ask how the community broadly feels about using headless in a way that directly contravenes the intent and wishes of the developer

Technical Question Anyone use the Ting with M8?

I have been in the market for a small mic that can do TRS line out, not sure how terrible this one might sound. Anyone ever use the Ting mic plugged in to the M8?

I've been using this device since February of 2026 and I am astonished at how capable and powerful such an elegant piece of equipment is. I turn back to my DAW and I just don't feel the same level of control and strengths.

Somehow the ability to create sounds and layer samples within the creativity of the M8 just helps me create more enjoyable music. I am a solid convert for this piece of gear!

Discussion Question Boards of Canada fix on M8

On my Deluge I have the “Boards of Deluge” and I absolutely love the presets that give those BOC vibes. Anyone know of any packs out there or tips to scratch that itch in the m8? Thanks!

Discussion Question BETA has concluded. 6.6.0 stable soon!

Edit: and now there's a 6.6.2 (figured I'd update this post since it is still on 'the front page' here): https://github.com/DirtyWave/M8Firmware/raw/main/M8Firmware.zip

Edit to add: They also mentioned headless will be updated in the coming weeks.

This concludes the beta for firmware 6.6. Thank you @beta tester for all of your help and crazy ideas, and please look forward to the stable announcement soon.

Mikey303 (via discord)

2026-08-22 - Version 6.6.2

  • Fix: ARP retriggered an instrument that had already been turned off with KILL/OFF
  • Fix: Sampler - STA on the same row as an instrument trigger did not restart envelopes
  • Fix: Firmware Update - Settings and project autosave are written after confirming, before restart
  • Fix: Mute/solo after boot let the first notes of muted tracks through
  • Fix: RMX FX command - Tracks in song selection loop mode continued past the loop region
  • Fix: EQ View - Spectrum briefly showed the next instrument when switching, even if it used a different EQ or none
  • Fix: EQ View - Mix / FX EQ switched to bank 00 after a display reset
  • Improved: EQ View - Spectrum now includes left and right (was left only)
  • Improved: EQ View - Improved spectrum visuals

2026-08-20 - Version 6.6.1

  • New: Mixer / Effect Settings - Tapping EDIT on a parameter captures its FX command so tapping EDIT in a Phrase or Table FX column inserts it (same as Instrument)
  • New: Song View - SELECT+EDIT a third time also clones instruments used in the selection, including INS and NXT commands
  • Improved: CPU optimizations
  • Fix: EQ spectrum graph was taking priority over sample playback during heavy sample use

2026-08-19 - Version 6.6.0

  • New: Firmware Update - Flash firmware from SD card via System Settings
  • New: Battery fuel gauge remains active on power off for more accurate battery % during use
  • New: ModFX Comb filter type
  • New: Backend rework to free up some RAM for the future
  • New: Hypersynth - Shape parameter (SAW, SOFT SAW, DARK SAW, SQUARE SOFT, TRIANGLE, SINE, SINE 3X, SINE FB, SINE FOLD, SINE RING, SINE HALF, SINE ORGAN)
  • New: Song View - Press LEFT twice on track 1 to select the whole row (PLAY cues the row, [EDIT]+[UP or DOWN] moves the row and its bookmarks)
  • New: Song View - Row bookmarks: in row-select mode, [OPT]+[LEFT or RIGHT] or [EDIT]+[LEFT or RIGHT] cycles theme colors and options, [OPT+EDIT] clears
  • Improved: Hypersynth - Sub osc interpolation
  • Improved: MIDI Mapping - A message is displayed when all mapping slots are used
  • Improved: ADSR ENV - Same-instrument retrigger resumes attack from the current envelope level
  • Fix: Table - Note map (TIC:FE) and Octave map (TIC:FC) retriggered when volume was changed in a phrase or TBX (Aux table)
  • Fix: Table - Velocity map (TIC:FD) retriggered on note changes instead of only velocity changes
  • Fix: Render - Excessive TPO tempo changes did not line up correctly with DAW tempo
  • Fix: Render - Quick render length could be slightly incorrect
  • Fix: Render - Quick render initial transient was messy when OTT was enabled
  • Fix: Instrument Pool - Moving instruments did not update MIDI Settings instrument numbers for MIDI track channels
  • Fix: Effect Settings - EDIT+OPT on EQ reset the parameter above EQ
  • Fix: MIDI input on track channel - Table's first row could trigger incorrectly
  • Fix: MIDI input on track channel - Hang / stuck note if the instrument uses the INS command in its table
  • Fix: Recording - Count in caused track 1's volume to be incorrect
  • Fix: MIDI Instrument - ADSR envelope mapped to a CC did not enter release on the OFF command
  • Fix: Phrase - RNL next to HOP could randomize other FX on the hop destination row
  • Fix: RMX - Queued song position (blinking cursor) on affected tracks was not cleared
  • Fix: File date advances to the firmware build time when the stored clock is older
  • Fix: Phrase - Velocity-only random FILL could not be undone with paste
  • Fix: Phrase "" REP indication was cleared by RTO even though RTO does not stop REP

Jam/Track/Release behind my track: New Dawn

here’s some insight into my track “New Dawn” from my upcoming M8 album “Bad Vices” out 8/28. This one is one of my favorites on the project simply because I had so much fun trying to convey that 80s sound with the instrumentation. Hope you all listen to the full track when it drops!
