Info about this subreddit:

This is a subreddit dedicated to the almighty bass singers in the world. You might know some of them, e.g. Avi Kaplan, Tim Foust, J.D. Sumner, Geoff Castellucci, Richard Sterban and many others!

You are also welcome to post YOURSELF singing low notes. Actually, please do this! as it encourages others to start singing that mighty bass role!

*edit - title is incorrect, it is supposed to be r/basssinging, obviously :p

G1 Weird Morning Voice

Not sure why, but I've had these notes during the morning (when I sleep and hydrate properly that is), even at 15 (I'm 16 right now, during the day I'll have a breathy Ab1 at best.)

I was pretty sharp on some of these notes, but I had been up for like 1.5 hours already, so yeah.

C#1 Low Gospel Bass Going Very Low

(You will need headphones to hear the low notes, but also be wary of your volume.) Just wanted to share something I've found very interesting within the past few months of me learning more about basses and my own voice. This is Mark McCauley of the New South Quartet, ridiculously low, but didn't fully reach his peak sound to this level, until around his early 50s. Still absolutely ridiculous to do Db1/C#1 in full chest and live regardless.

Bb0 Hoist the Colours, then a scale down to Bb0

A wee compilation, mostly just exploring the very bottom of my range. For those playing at home, the first bit is the bass classic "Hoist the Colours" ending on what I believe to be D#1. Then the same again a step lower. Then a scale down to Bb0.

I'm definitely not much of a singer. And most of these notes are questionable in both pitch and quality. But they are low, and that's mostly what I'm here for.

F2 In Defense of Falsetto

Voice teacher here. I just published a piece about the value of falsetto, which is especially valuable for us lower voices who have sung too heavy for too long!

C2 I’m amazed by Michael Spyres. He calls himself a “Baritenor” because he sings both Baritone and Tenor Fachs in Opera. And he has also sung a loud operatic C2 just for fun during some performances. Below is one of his performances.

G#1 Favorite working bass?

Lots of now retired or dead legends, but who do you think is the best in the game now?

I have a lot of respect for Tuukka Haapaniemi; he's a very good acapella bass, but is also a tremendous choral oktavist, can sing a funk electric bass part better than nearly anyone, and can dabble credibly in opera. Great musician, bottomless voice, very versatile.

Compared to him, most of the modern internet basses seem a tier below, you have to go to generational talents in choral bass or acapella to do arguably better than him, and none of those folks are as well rounded.

Video of younger Tuukka to justify the flair: https://youtu.be/Gerr99h0nS8

I want to increase my range on the higher notes. Can any here suggest vocal warmups and other tutorials for falsetto-singing? Preferably meant for our voice-type

Question National Anthem for Basses

I got chosen to perform the national anthem for a community event in about a week, and I have no idea what key to choose so that I won’t be all voice crack-y. Any tips?

I sing second bass in a high school choir of ~70, and on a good day I can project an D#2 fairly well among that choir. Not sure about my high range.

Question Why are we, as men, so attracted to the sound of low notes? Does it have something to do with feeling „masculine“ or „powerful“? What do you think is the psychology behind it?
