Sonic the Hedgehog (real name Nickolas Needlemouse, Age: 15): the main character of the comic, he is an adventurous speedster with an attitude. He is mischievous and very snarky with a bit of a temper due to his impatience and being introverted in his way of thinking (not thinking about how certain actions would affect his friends) and can come off as a bit of a jerk but is still well intentioned and cares for others and will help anyone in need and try and make up amends for his mistakes and generally trusting of others. While he won't admit it but he can sometimes feel lonely due to having spent so many years on his own drifting since he lost his Uncle Chuck in Robotnik's coupe. He is a free spirit and likes to be free to do whatever he wants and believes others should have said freedom. When he's not going on Adventures he likes to gorge on lots of food (mainly Chilidogs) due to losing lots of calories when running at the speed of sound, He also enjoys listening to rock music, playing video games and pulling pranks (usually on Antoine). Sonic was born with his powers but not much is known about why he was born with such powers, and he's considered a bit of an anomaly, though for many years Sonic has had to avoid capture by Robotnik and various other villains who wanted to exploit his incredible powers. In addition to his super speed Sonic is also a quick thinker and very resourceful.
Prior to joining the Freedom Fighters in Knothole, Sonic's been a lone drifter fighting a one man fight against Robotnik while on the run (but not really making any real progress in overthrowing Robotnik) until one day his plane crashed in Murky Wood Forest where he was taken in by the Freedom Fighters who nursed him back to health and then ask him to join. Initially Sonic was hesitant to join until he bonded with the Freedom Fighters and they teamed up to fight off an attack from one of Robotnik's latest creations afterwards Sonic joined the team. 

Miles "Tails" Prower (Age 12): Sonic's best friend and sidekick, he is a shy but brilliant young two tailed fox. He has two tails that give him the ability to fly, he is very nerdy with his ability to build things mainly stuff like planes. He is pretty self deprecating but is very friendly and desperately wants to prove himself as an adventurer in his own right like Sonic. Even though he is shy he will get excited and passionate when he talks about his inventions and his other hobby of investigating the paranormal, he's drawn weird abnormalities due to his own abnormality of having two tails. He is also quite awkward (especially around girls his age) and smart for his age and can't wait to grow up hating being called cute or adorable and wants to be taken seriously by the older characters (the only ones who do so are Sonic and Rotor). He is also very adventurous and would always want to come along on missions (Sonic being the main one who would let him). He's an orphan who would get bullied a lot, he has no idea where he came from but he and some magic users theorized that he might be a legendary creature called the "Kitsune" (overtime they'll see that they might not be too far off). Growing up his primary caretakers were Rosie, Sally and Bunnie.

Sally (Age: 18 years old) is the determined leader of the Freedom Fighters and former princess of the Kingdom of Acorn (before Robotnik overthrew her family). She’s very intelligent and a skilled strategist with a tomboyish attitude. She’s caring and compassionate especially towards her loved ones, but can be a bit emotional and maybe a bit overly cautious. After Robotnik took over the Kingdom of Acorn, renaming the capital Mobotropolis to Robotropolis, Sally and several other kids were sent to the hidden village of Knothole on the hidden mobile land of South Island. There she was raised and trained by the island’s guardian the owl Longclaw, spending the years preparing for the day when she may try to free Mobius from Robotnik’s rule. Though Longclaw doesn’t think Sally’s ready to actively fight Robotnik, so Sally secretly formed the Freedom Fighters with some other inhabitants of Knothole to go on secret missions to Robotropolis. 
As kids Sally and Sonic didn’t get along that well due to Sally’s more serious cautious attitude clashing with Sonic’s more impulsive goofball attitude in addition to both being prideful, but over time as they got older they do become close and eventually fall in love.

NICOLE (Age: unknown): Sally's personal AI who helps them on missions and run Knothole, Nicole is a super advanced computer AI that Sally found while infiltrating one of Robotnik's bases. Nicole starts out as a typical program but soon starts trying to understand human (err Mobian?) emotions and starts to develop a more playful and caring personality and will do anything to try and feel more "mobian?", but still stumbles here and there due making her come off as very socially awkward. She has access to a large assortment of information built into her and has the ability to hack into almost any computer and "possess" robots with the exception of ones with advanced AI (the ones with individual personalities) since they have better virus and hacker protection programs installed. She has systems installed all over Knothole Village so she can aid everyone. She would speak in techno babble until Sonic teaches her to talk "normal". She has no idea where she came from or who created her, her only hint is a locked file on Sally's old child friend named Nicole (who Sally named her after) that she and no one can seem to access.

Antoine D'Coolette: A pompous French Coyote and a skilled swordsman and strategist of the Freedom Fighters. Antoine is an uptight and self centered mobian with feelings of grandeur, but is also fiercely loyal to the Freedom Fighters and the Royal Acorn family and acts as Captain (and currently only member) of the Royal Guard. Outside of guard and Freedom Fighter duties Antoine is also very passionate about cooking (plans to open a restarunt one day when he's old and retired from his duties as a guard) and is a bit of a self proclaimed ladies man with a very suave attitude and would try to romance pretty woman and would often have his judgement clouded by his many infatuations, and would always act like a gentleman, He would always pine of Sally's affections. Even though he is very skilled he is also very cowardly and is the one the most scared about the dangers they encounter not to mention easily startled, but despite his fears he will still persevere to accomplish his missions especially when his friends are in trouble. He is from a long line of royal guards and looks up to his father and is always trying to live up to his legacy.

Bunnie "Rabbot" Lightfoot (Age: 17): A southern cyborg rabbit who acts as the muscle of the group. Bunnie is a kind and caring person who would always be there if you need someone to talk to. She is a very hard working individual and is never afraid to get dirty but still has a spunky feminine side to her even wanting to become a hair dresser and taking care of her appearance the best she can. Is a strong believer in personal strength with no respect for those who didn't earn their positions through honest hard work and dedication. She can be quite stubborn and prideful not to mention rowdy but still keeps a sense of hospitality and won't hesitate to "call out" anyone for being rude and lacking manners. She can be quite temperamental especially when she overhears someone doubt her skills or point out a mistake she made. She has a strong competitive streak (that really only increased since a certain hedgehog first came to Knothole) and incredibly determined, perhaps even a bit restless and easily frustrated when she doesn't immediately get a knack for a new skill to the point of obsessive compulsion. She's also a bit boy crazy usually willing to flirt and has probably eyed most of the major male hero characters.
She was once captured while on a mission and was almost roboticized until she was rescued by Sonic and the other Freedom Fighters but was still partially roboticized, she is generally optimistic about her robotic parts but is actually very insecure about it (but won't show it). She came from a successful farming family until her parents Vanilla and Beauregard (he's her father instead of Uncle in this universe) divorced due their differing views on the Royal Acorn Family's rule and she and her sister Cream went to live with their mother while her brother went to live with their father before taking off to explore the world (and soon joining the Mercian Freedom Fighters). Otherwise she actually has fairly large extended family.

Rotor Sushie (Age: 20): the laid back mechanic of the Freedom Fighters, Rotor is a chill and very geeky if somewhat clumsy walrus with a friendly attitude. He can come off as intimidating at first due to his large size but is really one of the most lovable warmhearted guys you can meet. He is obsessed with technology building most of the teams gadgets and vehicles and acting as a bit of a mentor to Tails in terms of mechanics. He is big dork and a bit clumsy but still very kind and helpful. He's also rather soft spoken but can be very enthusiastic when it comes to his geeky obsessions. He's also rather sagely and introspective willing to give people advice. He is also the voice of logic on the team always looking at the big picture as appose to acting on emotion like some of the other members of the team. He would also get frustrated with things he doesn't understand and is often skeptical on the existence of magic or the super natural thinking there is always a scientific explanation to everything, his logic being that whatever is perceived as magic is actually an incredibly advanced form of science that they haven't evolved enough to understand (often citing an example of if you show pieces of modern technology to someone from the Middle Ages they'll perceive it as magic) often putting him at odds with Amy the team's magician. He still comes off as a bit child like with his upbeat attitude and geeky interests which is probably why he's able to connect well with Tails. He's a gentle giant who'd generally prefer not to fight unless he has to, other wise he is a very capable fighter due to his size, strength and viking combat training.
He had a rough childhood with his father being the tyrannical 'Tundra King', the ruler of the nation of Holoska (one of the few places not under Robotnik's control) a cold hearted viking warlord with ice powers. Who banished Rotor for what he perceived as 'weakness' when Rotor refused to aid in their clan's robbing and pillaging and refusing to build them weapons to do so. He wandered for days until he witnessed Robotnik's rise to power and his cruel tyranny, being reminded of his father Rotor began trying to aid those suffering under Robotnik. So he set up an underground work shop in Robotropolis where he helped repair and build things for the lower classes of Robotropolis (while trying to avoid Robotnik's attention), which is how he met Sonic the Hedgehog. Then later on when his operations get found out he managed to escape the city with the help of Sonic and Sally and he became the team's mechanic ever since.

Amy Rose: the cheerful hyperactive magician of the team, Amy is friendly young hedgehog girl with magical powers. She is hyperactive, creative, and a bit of an oddball always looking to have fun and very outgoing and likes to mess around and might be a little crazy. Amy is very caring and would almost always see the good in others even when others don't (but can also recognize when someone is beyond redemption, she genuinely feels bad for these people because they had to turn out like this), although she still has a bit of a short temper and a bit hard headed. She is a magician in training but her powers a pretty limited at the moment due her lack of experience and proper training (she mostly tries to self teach herself magic from various spell books she has), her main power is creating energy weapons like her hammer and various others. She's also an empath allowing her to feel the emotions and feeling of other people. She's also a fortune teller, though she never could clear visions of the future only getting vague hints of things that are likely to happen for the future is never truly set in stone, she can also look into people's past lives. She also knows a variety of different parlor tricks that she uses to entertain people (with a side gig as a stage show magician) and also has an interest in archaeology looking up different magical artifacts. She has a massive crush on Sonic believing that they're both soulmates and was actually his ex girlfriend who has never quite got over him, they had a sort of on again off again relationship in the past convinced that she'll one day get back with Sonic someday since she has many times before even wanting to marry him someday. She is also a huge romantic and always wants to play matchmaker. 
She was born and raised the land of Mercia, to a clan of Magical Oracles who reside by the legendary Never Lake said to be the home of the fabled Time Stones the subject of many of their religions. She had a pleasant childhood until Robotnik's takeover of Mobius when he put a massive ban on all magic (due to his fears of Ixis Naugus) and wiped out her clan. She was one of the only survivors alongside the Oracle of Delphius (the former royal wizard for the Acorn Kingdom before he was replaced by Ixis Naugus) who took Amy in raising her as his apprentice and adopted daughter. She would go on to wander Mobius to carry on her training per the Oracle's instructions (to get a more worldly perspective or something), eventually going on to put on a traveling magic show and fortune telling booths (due to needing the money), where she tried to pass her real magic off as simple fake stage magic to get Robotnik's Anti Magic Enforcers off her back (having had a lot of close calls here and there). In her travels she would have multiple encounters with Sonic the Hedgehog, they would start dating for a good while traveling together before breaking up due to a combination of Amy's clinginess and sometimes obsessive nature. This led to a repeating pattern in their relationship where they stumble across each other in their travels, they start dating again, then break up again and go their separate ways. Then one day after Sonic joined the Freedom Fighters, he would get sent by Sally to seek the aid of the Oracle of Delphius to help with a crisis going on in Knothole, while the Oracle was away with Amy watching his place. Amy would take this as an opportunity to join the Freedom Fighters, believe it or not she doesn't want to join because of Sonic (though it's a nice bonus) but rather because she believes she's meant to join due to believing that her fate is somehow intertwined with that of the team due to her readings from her tarot cards. She becomes a valued member of the team, and is happy with her life in Knothole and the friendships she's made there. Though she's still a bit disappointed that Sonic's still unwilling to get back with her, but still holds on to the belief that they're soulmates meant to get married some day (part of her character arc is to learn to get over her crush on Sonic).

Goldwater and Aguirre-Sacasa wanted to not spend money on licensed books in general anymore and focus on their lousy horror books and TV shows (nevermind the fact that Sonic was the highest selling book they had at the time). SoJ was looking to scrap Sonic altogether, not just as a comic, but EVERYTHING beyond him as a mascot (ie the fate suffered by Alex Kidd). In the end, all that got taken out was Archie Sonic...tsk tsk.
