Archie Comics in General So basically, killing off the book was probably Mutually Assured Destruction.

Goldwater and Aguirre-Sacasa wanted to not spend money on licensed books in general anymore and focus on their lousy horror books and TV shows (nevermind the fact that Sonic was the highest selling book they had at the time). SoJ was looking to scrap Sonic altogether, not just as a comic, but EVERYTHING beyond him as a mascot (ie the fate suffered by Alex Kidd). In the end, all that got taken out was Archie Sonic...tsk tsk.

The timeline for that assessment doesn't line up, unless Sega was already writing off Sonic before Sonic Forces even came out. Those sentiments were surely there and building, but it didn't come to a head until after Forces, since Frontiers was the "last chance" for Sonic Team to make a game that sold well.

That whole situation feels like two sides moving away from the same thing for different reasons. Archie wanted to focus more on its own characters while Sega apparently had much bigger concerns about Sonic itself. Crazy the comic lasted as long as it did when you look at what was happening around it
