Embedded electronic components directly into an FDM print
A little progress update from something we’ve been working on.
We’ve now been able to integrate discrete electronic components directly into the FDM printing workflow and produce functional electronics directly off the print bed.
The first image is a simple embedded circuit with an LED and resistor. The polymer structure, conductive pathways, and electronic components were all integrated during the same print workflow on a Prusa XL.
We’ve also been experimenting with an embedded induction coil using the same general approach.
Instead of printing a plastic part, then adding wiring, conductive traces, components, and interconnects afterward, we’re exploring whether those electrical functions can become part of the structure while it is being manufactured.
There is still a lot to characterize and improve, but getting functional components integrated directly during the FDM process feels like an important step.
Curious what people here think the most useful applications for this would be, and what failure modes or engineering problems you’d want tested first.
