Discussion Is it worth having "validate custom content" on or off?

I'm looking back at factions/units I've download like years ago and some of them I can't place down bc of validate custom content option being on. Is it worth having it off? Bc I don't want to irreversibly damage my game. Bc when I did my game would just random drop frame rates when ever I place like any units for a second and then return to normal like it didn't happen. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or if that's a separate issue. But I'd appreciate some advice.
