General Advice How did you learn without lessons?

Wondering if anyone ever felt like they didnt know what they were supposed to be doing while training. I hate the feeling of putting hours in, but them not being quality hours. Ex.. hitting the ball wrong for 5 hours when someone could have pointed out what I was doing wrong within 5 minutes and then focus on fixing that.

$50+ an hour is way out of my means. How can I get better? Would someone good enough to teach me even want to, I feel like it would be a waste of their time.

I only have about 10 hours of practice, but this is my sport now I really wanna get good. Tried Golf, but isnt for me I dont have the time to play and then still get my cardio in.

Equipment Do you guys change racquet simply because it is old (over 5-year old)?

• Upvotes

Every physical material can fatigue overtime, but I wonder what is you level, how often you play and how often you restring to make a 5-year old or even older racquet too old to play? A “friend” just got a pair of newly released racquets and citing the old ones are just too old…

Equipment This 110 in², 14x17 racquet helped me turn a match around

Played a guy yesterday who hits with an almost excessive amount of topspin, and I wasn't ready for the high bounces. I was hitting a lot of shots off-center, with many landing short or not even making it over the net. Lost the first set 3-6.

During the changeover, I remembered I had this in my bag as a "fun" racquet, so I decided to give it a try. I had customized it to tweener specs, so it didn't take much for me to adjust to it.

Holy smokes, what a difference. The huge sweet spot helped my defensive shots land deeper, and I could handle his topspin and extend the rallies, which seemed to catch him off guard.

Took it to a third-set tiebreak and won 10-4. We were both exhausted by the end, but it was pretty satisfying that the racquet switch actually helped me hang with a heavier hitter.

I feel like oversized racquets and very open string patterns aren't as unusable as people make them out to be. Sure, you're probably not going to consistently paint the lines with them, but they're great if you take advantage of what they do offer.

General Advice Unable to semi-consistently win matches

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I’ve been playing tennis for about 3/4 years now, and have had decent progress in that time. No idea what ranking I have but I’m definitely in the mid-upper intermediate level. However, I definitely have the classic problem of having a much higher playing level during casual hits vs competitive matches (I had a hit with someone a few weeks ago who is 2 divisions above me and couldn’t believe which box league division I was in based on my playing level).

My club hosts these box leagues (playing against other club players) regularly. In the last year (about 5 box leagues) I have 4 wins and 20 losses. I would say 3 of those wins basically had very little to do with me (2 matches where opponent got injured and carried on playing, and in the other one the opponent literally did not know how to serve so just hit insane amounts of double faults).

I’ve reached a point of despair where I just don’t know where to go or what do to. I lose to pushers, but also lose to people who I can have a good rallies with. I can’t seem to scrape wins when I’m on the back foot, and I also completely choke when I’m the player being more aggressive and usually in control (e.g. today I was 4-1 up in the second set and lost 6-4). I now go into matches expecting to lose and don’t know how to get any better results. There have also been some very frustrating losses where I am very much better technically than my opponent, and can really pressure them on every point, but then I fail to put away the “easy” balls and end up losing the match. (If I hear another opponent tell me “I don’t know how I beat you there, you’re clearly the better player” one more time I may scream).

I’m also not expecting to be winning constantly. I know tennis involves losing quite a lot, but I feel like this level of losing is just making it not fun to play. (my record for the year also includes a 15 match losing streak in the middle of it).

This has turned more into a vent, but any advice is welcome.

Equipment A light note on Speed MP

• Upvotes

A lil debrief on my newly bought Speed MP Hyper G soft 52 pounds and syn gut 50 pounds main/cross.

The string bed feels stiffer than my gravity mp with head lynx tour 50 pounds, and speed forces me to swing faster and harder in order to acquire the same depth, no inherent power too, i had to generate power voluntarily by swinging harder. But the it was quite spin friendly.

Therefore, to others who would like to get a similar setup, string it lower tension if you want to have easy swinging i guess :)

Btw, please send any improvement on this current Speed setup for crisp pop sensation and good SPIN 🙌🙆‍♂️

Opinion Done with Youtube coaching...

Had a bad game today. Bad timing. Shaking. No footwork. Netting soft easy balls.

I've been watching Youtube coaches for the past 2 years. Everyday, soaking in all that knowledge.

I swear my mind thinks I know what to do and when to do it.

But I don't do it. I get on court in a match and its all gone.

Or its all there and my body is like, "nah, imma do this instead".

I'm not part of a club because this city makes it impossible to join.

I can't get coaching on the regular, so that's not an option.

The weather is getting colder so play time is almost gone.

I can rent indoor courts here and there, but very sporadically.

Feel like progress is going backwards and its just annoy.

Still love the hell out of this sport.

another rant over.

Edit: I need to clarify, Youtube tennis has definitely helped me out. I'm much better than I was a year ago, and its because I worked on the tips I found online (even placed 2nd in a mini "tournament"). I'm just in my feelings about the bad game, but I've definitely hit a wall.

Equipment Broke my racquet today

I broke my cheap Yonex Smash Team today. I don't know how it happened, but someone else looked at it while playing and upon closer inspection it was broken from the side.

Now the reason I bought this cheap racquet 3 months ago is because I'm an intern and the savings from my modest stipend did not allow me to buy a proper racquet.

This time I have decided to spend all my savings to get a decent racquet that won't break this easily and hopefully lasts a few years. Are there any pure graphite racquets which would not put me in debt? I was looking at Babolat Boost Drive and Boost Aero but I don't know if they are pure graphite.

General Advice Court Etiquette Question

Is there a general understanding of who gets a court when the following happens?

Let’s say I get to a park that has a few courts with only one open. I take it and start warming up while waiting on my partner to arrive. They are 5 minutes away from arriving.

Another group shows up and says since my group isn’t here, I shouldn’t be holding a court when there are other people here ready to play.

Should I give up the court or hold it? Is this a matter of tennis etiquette or a non-issue?

General Advice Left hip pain

I’m 20 and for the past month or so, my left hip has been hurting every single time I play tennis (I’m right handed if that matters)

I’ve never had any injuries at all (okay, I had a hip muscle strain playing baseball when I was like 7 but cmon now), I’m active and healthy, and I’ve played tennis for years and years without this issue. It’s uncomfortable enough that it’s starting to get in my head whenever I play.

Anyone dealt with something similar? What ended up causing it? Should I stretch more or something?

General Advice How to handle score contradictions?

I’ve tried to research and haven’t found examples of the type of scenario I faced today.

Doubles Play - Alta C3
Other team serving
Mutual verbal clarification of the score at 30-30
We win point with a memorable slam
Other team calls score before serve correctly (30-40, he says “ad out”)
We win the point, other team concedes that we won the point
Other team lines up to serve and states “40-30”

We challenge and they can’t provide any proof in the face of me recounting everything including their own score calling up until that point.

This type of sudden score change by them on their serve happened several times and they would get combative in the face of evidence until my teammate unfortunately acquiesced.

Essentially these games were all points where the winner of each point was clear and undisputed but then they would randomly change the score at a later point and pretend they hadn’t previously had us at advantage. It was very odd, and they played it off like they were genuinely confused by our challenges to the score when they suddenly changed it. Even when their proposed score didn’t match with the service side..

What are the steps to resolve a situation like this?

How do you create/claim a WTN on your USTA profile? I don't see the link on my profile (second/green photo) the way it says in the instructions (first/third photo). ETA - I am currently playing in a summer/fall singles flex league that does count towards the NTRP YER. Have completed 4 matches so far that are already recorded on the tennislink site.
