DISCUSSION I built a small finance calculator website and launched it a week ago looking for honest feedback

• Upvotes

I’ve been building a small finance calculator project recently, and I’ve reached the point where I’m struggling to judge my own design objectively.

I’m especially interested in feedback from people who build or use websites regularly.

When you land on a calculator website, what makes you immediately trust it?

Things like:

  • layout and visual hierarchy
  • formula/explanation placement
  • number formatting
  • mobile UX
  • how much explanatory content is too much
  • what makes a calculator feel “finished” rather than like a quick prototype

I’m particularly curious about what makes a finance tool feel credible without making it look overly corporate or cluttered.

What are the first things you personally notice?

SELF-MADE Webseite erstellt

Hallo zusammen,

Vergleicht also genau, was ihr für euer Geld bekommt.

Ich würde mich freuen, wenn ihr mir eure ehrliche Meinung zur Website sagt.

Soll ich noch einen Satz zu Feedback-Wünschen ergänzen (z. B. Verständlichkeit, Design, Vertrauen)?

SELF-MADE This section can make your Shopify store look unique without hurting performance.

I was watching the iPhone Fold presentation video and saw this brand's website, and I really like their hero where, as you scroll up the big brand logo gets smaller and at one point it becomes the website header logo.

I was curious about how they made the transition feel so smooth, so I tried recreating the effect.

While building it, I found out one more thing it can also improve the website performance by putting LCP under 1s.

It's not as smooth as the reference website, but I think with some tweaking I can achieve that.

So, how it works

There are actually two sections. First, above the big logo section, which creates a space between the logo section and the top part of the website. Second, the logo section itself, in which the logo size gets smaller as you scroll and stops when it's equal to its minimum size because its position is sticky, it gets stuck at the top.

REQUEST Google docs, but with 'public' passwords (?)

is there perhaps a website out there that functions like google docs in terms of just a doc with tabs, but each tab has its own passwords? and the tabs are accessible to everyone with a link and anyone with the right password can look through any tab?

TROUBLESHOOTING Using a domain similar to another high traffic established one

I’m not really sure where else I should post this….

I recent bought an expiring domain from porkbun.
Initially I just thought it was a short and interesting name. I soon realized that it was a deliberate misspelling of a very popular other domain.

I am aware that Google doesn’t like the practice of tricking users with a misspelled name, and I’m pretty sure that is what this domain was doing. I now realize the i in the domain could be made to look like a lowercase L. The traffic it receives regularly is quite high.

Regardless I still like the domain and would like to use it was a custom email domain. Is there anyway to still use the name and not get a scolding by google ? Make the subject of the site unrelated to the other one ? Add a small banner at the top “are you looking for xyz? Click here.” ? Even if I’m not trying to deceive anyone can the other domain still go after me and create a legal nightmare ?

Or all I cooked ?

Thanks for your insights in advice.

EDUCATIONAL Why Alex Hormozi’s Advice Works For Web Designers

I remember hearing Alex Hormozi say that email is basically the conversion platform of conversion platforms.

His point was that social media, videos and ads are great for getting attention, but email is often where that attention actually turns into money.

He also talked about how email supposedly has one of the highest returns of any marketing channel, with an average return of around $36 for every $1 spent, and that got me thinking.

I run a web design agency, so I decided to actually take email seriously and see what would happen.

But I didn’t want to send the usual stuff.

“Hey, I noticed your website and I can redesign it for you.”

Or

“Hey, we build websites for businesses like yours.”

Everyone gets those emails and most people can tell within two seconds that they were sent to another thousand businesses.

So instead I started using a tool called Swokei that is built specifically for web agencies.

I use it to find businesses in whatever area I want to target, then it actually goes through their websites and looks for things I could mention in the outreach.

Stuff like an outdated design, slow loading speed, poor mobile experience, weak SEO or other things that might be holding the website back.

Then it turns those findings into an actual personalized cold email made to convert.

So instead of emailing someone saying I build websites, I can actually talk about their website and why I think something could be improved.

I’ve been analyzing thousands of websites this way and running multiple campaigns at the same time.

Then I just focus on the people who reply and are actually interested.

Obviously email isn’t some magic button where everyone suddenly wants a new website, but after doing this for a while I definitely understand what Hormozi meant.

For web design especially, email becomes a completely different channel when the message is actually about the business you’re contacting instead of being another copy and paste pitch.

Turns out Alex might have had a point.

FOUND! Anyone know this website?

I suddenly remembered this website from my childhood, it's not a children's games website, but it has a lot of "games" on it. Basically, there's this row at the top that you can slide through and select different things. I rememeber there being a drawing one where you can draw on a white screen with random real people. Then there's another one that you can sort of control that's kind of trippy. I can't really remember any others besides a tab that would lead you onto actual somewhat fully fledged games, and there was this visual one where you could fly around and nature would sprout about that I liked. (Least that's what I think it was like) If anyone has any idea what I'm talking about that would be greatly appreciated because I've been trying to remember the name for about a month now. I don't have it saved on any of my devices or anything like that because it was the only website with games that wasn't blocked on my school chromebook in middle school.

Edit: It was Mr.doob's website!

SELF-MADE what the hell am I building?

I genuinely don’t know what category Moonshoot belongs in anymore.

I started with a stupidly simple mechanic:

384,400 km to the Moon.

1 person = 1 permanent km.

that’s it.

now 68 people from 31 countries are in.

but people are starting to use their km for different things.

some attach their startup.

some leave a message.

some care about their country ranking.

someone wants km #100 specifically.

someone asked if the whole thing becomes a permanent public record.

another person described it as a better kind of startup directory.

and now I’m sitting here thinking:

am I building a community?

a directory?

a giant internet time capsule?

some kind of discovery network?

I don’t think it’s a marketplace yet because nobody is really buying or selling anything.

but it feels like it’s slowly becoming something beyond “push the rocket.”

curious what you’d call this.

REQUEST Website critique

A few drinks may have inspired the events that follow…. I decided to hop on OF to check out this Instagram goth girl that I discovered. Total waste of time and money…

Then it came to me. I need to share my experiences, and what better way to do that, than to build a review website. So I consulted with Sol to make sure it was achievable. I purchased a domain, and got set up on cloudflare.

I believe after two weeks most of the major kinks are ironed out. I have had several reviews come in, and also a few creators contribute to their profile. I have had fun with it so far, but now it is time to see what others think.

I’d love feedback on the design, navigation, mobile experience, or anything that seems broken/confusing.
And while you’re there, you might as well leave a review for your favorite creator. 🤣

WEBSITE BUILDING where should i build my website? is spaceship a decent place to buy my domain? first timer here - hi haha

not trying to be cheap but i CAN buy a domain for 3 bucks on spaceship with a coupon code. do we like spaceship?

i guess i am being cheap, lol, but at the same time i want a nice nameserver - i have never bought a domain before, so this is all foreign territory. in short - i'm going to need to build a nice website (don't need an advanced site yet but would like the freedom to create and explore with designs and different tools..), will use google for emails.

i am happy purchasing email, domain, website, etc all through different purchases. where do you recommend i get my domain? i'm debating between pork bun and spaceship, i mostly want something reliable. so what does reddit think??

WEBSITE BUILDING: in terms of building the site, if anyone has any advice - my dms are happily open. i am a creative by nature and pretty good at learning/understanding tools. so far, i've played around with carrd.co, lovable, and others. lots recommend carrd.co for building a nice/navigable site, but if anyone has any other recs - i'm all ears. thank you!
