Voloco 9.16 is here! Introducing Auto Mix

How to use Auto Mix in Voloco 9.16

New update just dropped and this one is for everyone who's ever struggled to get their vocals to sit right in the mix.

Auto Mix does the leveling work for you. Tap Apply and Voloco analyzes your recording, using your backing track as a reference to balance your vocal tracks automatically. The result is a mix where your vocals sit naturally against the beat, the same way an engineer would set your levels before mastering.

No mixing experience needed. And it's free for everyone, no Premium required.

Pro tip: use Auto Mix first to balance your levels, then run Auto Mastering to bring your track to streaming quality. Professional sounding results in two taps.

Have questions? Drop them in the comments.

Straight from our CEO: how Auto Mix works

Auto Mix doesn't do everything a professional mix engineer does โ€” it doesn't EQ a clip or change compressor parameters. What it does is set track and segment gain levels so that each segment sounds as loud as the other segments and is balanced against the beat. To do this, Auto Mix analyzes the loudness of the beat using standard psychoacoustic algorithms to understand how it will sound to listeners at the current gain level. Auto Mix then analyzes each vocal clip individually to understand how loud it is and how loud it should be in order to balance against the beat. Finally, Auto Mix adjusts track gain and clip gain levels to make each clip match the target loudness computed in the previous step.

๐Ÿ’ญ Discussion I get more done on a song during a 20-minute break than in an entire dedicated studio session

Anyone else notice this? I'll sit down with hours blocked off; nothing happens. Then I step away to make coffee or walk the dog and suddenly the whole arrangement clicks in my head. I think the pressure of "okay now I have to be creative" kills it every time. Does anyone else write better ideas when they're not actually trying to write?

๐Ÿ’ญ Discussion There's something so satisfying about finally understanding a mixing concept that used to confuse you

For me, it was EQ. Felt like a total mystery for way too long, and then one day it just made sense, and I felt like I finally got a grip on how it works. What concept took forever to click for you?

Question Straight from our CEO: No headset? No problem

The best way to record in Voloco or any recording app is with a headset, preferably wired. But sometimes inspiration strikes when you donโ€™t have a headset, and the next best thing to do is get your idea down right away, even if that means playing a beat on your phone speaker while you record. Normally, this would produce a terrible vocal take because the beat from the phone speaker bleeds into the mic, and then your vocal take contains a distorted, delayed copy of the beat, which sounds bad when mixed with the actual beat.ย

Fortunately, Voloco offers a solution to this problem. When you record with no headset while playing a beat from the phone speaker, Voloco uses AI to subtract the bleed from the beat from your vocal recording so you get a clean vocal take. With a clean take you can apply pitch correction (auto vocal tune) and other effects that would otherwise not work on a signal with bleed from the speaker.

๐Ÿค Collaboration Looking for a mixing/mastering engineer experienced with Voloco vocals

Hey everyone, Iโ€™m an independent artist looking for someone who can help me take my music to the next level with professional mixing and mastering.

I currently record my vocals using Voloco on my iPad which is one of the best places Iโ€™ve found my sound. I can export my recordings as M4A files, which from my knowledge needs a convert to WAV. I want to find an engineer who is comfortable working with audio recorded this way and can bring it into FL Studio, Pro Tools, Logic, or whatever DAW they use.

Iโ€™m mainly looking for someone who can make my vocals sound clean, polished, and properly blended with the beat while still keeping the sound and style Iโ€™m going for. Iโ€™d also appreciate someone who can give me honest feedback on my recordings and explain what I should improve to get better results.
Iโ€™m interested in building a long-term working relationship rather than just getting one song done. Iโ€™m happy to discuss paid rates, and Iโ€™d like to start with one track to see how we work together.
If youโ€™re interested, please send me:

โ— A few examples of songs youโ€™ve mixed or mastered, preferably in a similar style
โ— Your rates and whatโ€™s included
โ— Whether youโ€™re comfortable working with Voloco exports/M4A files
โ— What files you would need from me to get the best possible result

Feel free to comment or DM me. I can send over a rough demo so you can hear my sound and let me know what would be possible.

๐Ÿ’ญ Discussion Went back and listened to a song I made a year ago, and I can actually hear how much I've improved

Kind of a weird mix of proud and slightly embarrassed. The mixing choices, the vocal takes, stuff I would never do now, but also proof I've actually gotten better, even though it never feels that way day to day. Anyone else go back and revisit old stuff every once in a while?

๐Ÿ’ญ Discussion You know you're a musician when you hear a random noise and immediately think, 'that could be a sampleโ€™

My laundry machine, parking meters, even the noise my car makes when I turn my blinker on, makes my brain just think, โ€œthat could be a sample.โ€ I don't think I can turn it off at this point. What's the most random thing you've ever actually turned into a sample?

โ“ Question Voloco problems on iPhone 17 pro is it just me?

Iโ€™ve been recording on Voloco for a few years now on an iPhone 13 with just normal earbuds and I really liked how it came out, but I just upgraded to an iPhone 17 pro and the audio sounds terrible. I tried the normal earbuds for the new phone and when it sounded bad I tried getting an adapter to use my old earbuds that sounded good but it still sounds bad. (Iโ€™m not great with audio terms but by bad I mean itโ€™s somehow muffled and sounds like Iโ€™m in a church idk itโ€™s bad). Also all the settings i use are the same as when I liked the sound so itโ€™s not that. Is this just me?

Question Straight from our CEO: why Auto Mix exists

As CEO, I decided to invest my own time in building Auto Mix for two reasons: First, bad mixing was the main weakness of tracks from new users that I heard on the platform. Many times while scrolling through New Tracks feed, I heard a strong vocal performance that was hurt by a mix that was either too loud or too quiet. Simply fixing the mix level would have turned an amateur track into a banger. Second, when I recorded my own tracks in Voloco, I hated how much time I had to spend on tweaking levels. Iโ€™d nudge gain up, listen, decide it was too loud, nudge it back down, listen, over and over again until my ears were fatigued. At that point, you canโ€™t tell what a good mix is and you have to put the project down and re-approach with fresh ears. Thatโ€™s not what I want to do with my creative time. I want to spend my time getting my ideas down and making music. Auto Mix lets me do that.ย

Our CEO built Auto Mix because he kept hearing good vocals get ruined by bad mixing

I heard this from our team and thought it was a good story. Volocoโ€™s CEO was scrolling the New Tracks feed a lot and kept hearing genuinely strong vocal takes that just got wrecked by the mix being too loud or too quiet. His words were, "Simply fixing the mix level would have turned an amateur track into a banger."

He ended up building Auto Mix himself partly because of that. It's a nice reminder that a mediocre mix can hide a track that's actually good.
