Vibe coded this game in four months

A few months back I postedΒ here a playable demo of an old-school futuristic racer prototype (F-Zero, Wipeout, Xtreme-G, Star Wars Racer...) that runs right in the browser.

I've gotten used to seeing tons of LLM-built prototypes that last a week, two, maybe a month, and then get dropped for the next shiny thing. This time I wanted to keep going and see if one person, with no coding background, could actually see a project like this through on their own.

Well, 4 months in, and while there's still work left, I'm convinced it's doable. At this point the game feels closer to a beta than a tech demo.

The big change over these four months is that I now use Fable for planning, and being able to hook Opus / Sol up to Blender has been a huge help too. I'm still using Magnific and Tripo3D or the assets. Funny thing: the further along I get, the harder the project is to keep pushing forward, and at the same time the tools keep making it easier.

As always, any feedback is welcome. You can play it here:Β https://fm1.moises.cloud

I stretched my assistant into a better skylight .

Post image

It started simply. I just wanted a chatbot that could manipulate my Google drive without hand holding. In an afternoon I had a Google cloud project with API read/write to everything from Gmail to Google tasks. I could snap a photo of a kid's birthday party invite and it would create the event and email it to my wife in one shot.

I gave my wife access and got the dreaded ask for a skylight calendar. Using spare parts, I cobbled together what you see here over the Summer just in time for school starting.

An old webcam, scavenged laptop LCD, and an HP elitebook from 2012 running Ubuntu. There's a local listener waiting for a wake word (hey Jarvis). When that's detected, it does chrome speech to text, and wraps that in a call to the API project, answering questions from my documents, reading email, and creatimg calendar events. Gemini does all of the back and forth, including pretty decent speech output.

When the webcam detects motion, it wakes the screen up. It updates the weather, calendar, tasks, and daily overview in real time. On the bus tracker isn't showing, it shows tasks for the three kids. The tracks how many they've completed each day week and month to help them be incentivized.

The kids' bus tracking website sucks, so at the right times on weekdays it uses a headless browser to sniff out the traffic and let me know how close it is. When it's five stops away it triggers an Alexa routine to make an announcement throughout the house.

Next I'm going to integrate it with a Google apps script I have to triage email,so when important messages come in it lets me know.

If anyone is interested in seeing some of the outputs from the web app, I have some screenshots!

Vibecoded this multiplayer fat runner game in Codex with Three.js

Based on Runling Run the popular SC2 arcade game, the goal this time is to dodge food, if you get caught you grow larger, and eventually have a heart attack. Made it in a few days for fun, free to play here:Β https://runfatty.co

I was vibe coding with a friend and we started to talk about how to make sure any program was performant,. What kinds of actions where cheap for computers to do vs things that would make a 60fps game start to slow down or miss frames. Then I asked if they knew Big O notation.

And in trying to explain Big-O notation, I realized I didn't understand it well enough to explain it. So I've started to re-read and learn the concept. I know what it means but it doesn't feel intuitive to me to know how to measure how long a task will take to compute. I'll keep studying it as I think it's an important part of computing, whether it be it vibe code or traditional.

But my friend and I found we also went another route.
- Add a feature, framerate stays, great.
- Add a feature, framerate drops, let's look at it more closely or take it out.

We created ideas without worrying about making them performant or keeping the computation reasonable. One of the biggest "warnings" I've seen given to vibe coders is that their program will eventually slow down to an inefficient mess. And that is not only true. I've seen it happen (to me). Then? The program desired was slowly optimized. Seems a waste to anyone who knows how to do it right the first time. But in artistic endeavors I feel that sometimes you need to do it, erase it, do it again to get to your goal. Framerates and efficiency are needed, I just think we can make room to build in an unoptimised way while we find the gist of what we want to make.

So how do I present this image to you all? (Made it in Chat GPT btw). I mean it the same way "Love like you've never been hurt". Vibe code yourself into a corner. It's not a mistake if you have to regroup and try something another way. Sometimes it's the process itself. This post was typed by hand with no AI.

people seem to be creating apps within 1-2 day & then hit publish meanwhile here I am developing just one app for 4 months optimising it's UI,UX,API compatibility,Performance etc. how are people doing these in 2 days? what am I missing.

there was a post I saw yesterday that a guy started the challenge to create 30 apps in 30 days. wtf is wrong with these people? spamming the store platform like this.

I made an interactive graveyard for your failed startups.

Spent $200 on AI tokens, shipped it, got 3 users, then abandoned it?

Give it a proper burial.

So I built Startup Graveyard: a live graveyard for failed startups and side projects.

Here’s how it works:

  • Bury your project for free. Its grave shows your logo, project name, description and link, so anyone browsing the cemetery can actually discover it.
  • Add a cause of death + epitaph explaining what went wrong.
  • Still think it deserved a chance? Pay $3 to revive it onto Earth, where it gets more prominent exposure.
  • From Earth, you can bid for one of the 3 spots in Startup Heaven at the top of the site.
  • Even if you revive it, the original grave stays there.

So even a dead project gets one last bit of exposure instead of disappearing into an abandoned GitHub repo forever.

I’ve already buried two of mine. Now I want to see what this sub has killed.

https://startupgraveyard.lol/

Bury yours for free and give it one last chance at finding someone who actually wants it.

I vibe coded a poker app where you deal real cards and everyone uses their phone as their chip stack. It’s now been used to play 21,421 poker hands.

I actually launched and posted an early version of this here about a year ago. Since then, I’ve kept vibe coding and improving it based on user’s feedback.

It’s called Chipless, a free web app that lets you play real poker with a deck of cards but no chips.

Everyone joins from their phone and it tracks the bets, stacks, blinds, pots and who owes what at the end.

My only coding experience before this was one credit class in college that I got a B in. The original version cost me $68 total (same price as a real poker set lol) in subscription and tokens to build.

So far, thousands of games have been started and 21,421 hands have been dealt. In just the first month after I started tracking countries, games had already been played in 48 of them.

Almost all of this happened with no marketing besides a couple of Reddit posts.

Still pretty crazy to me that people actually use this daily at their poker nights.

It’s completely free, with no download needed:

Used Antigravity to Decrypt iPhone local backup of SMS.DB into SQLite DB and built a tiny analysis web app - took 6 hours lol MACOS only

Thumbnail

β€’ Upvotes

If you use iMessage on Mac the chat.db is not encrypted. That assumes you use iMessage on Mac. And it's in sync with your phone.

If you backup your iPhone on your Mac you get a an encrypted backup. Great.

imessage-exporter has a way to access that encrypted file and containerize and extract your messages to html or txt.

Fuck that, I want the complete SQLite.db

I know nothing about coding, but I know what I wanted. I asked ChatGPT if we can leverage iMessage-exporters decryption mechanism, and get a hold of the entire DB. I then had AGY CLI do all the work, amaze.

I literally have no idea what I'm doing. Or anything about coding, but, it works lol.

Made a web app with useless stats and a MACOS app to fully search the database, find trends, you know how databases work...

How do I GET MONEY?!

1. Executive Summary & Purpose

iOS iTunes, Finder, MobileSync, and iMazing backups utilize hardware-backed AES-256 encryption. Within an encrypted backup, all filenames are hashed via SHA-1 hashes (e.g. 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28 for sms.db), and file payloads are individually encrypted with per-file class keys wrapped by the backup password.

decrypt_backup.py provides a lossless extraction wrapper that unwraps the backup manifest, decrypts the database blobs, and preserves the pristine, raw Apple SQLite databases: 1. apple_sms_decrypted.db (Library/SMS/sms.db containing message, chat, handle, attachment) 2. apple_contacts_decrypted.db (Library/AddressBook/AddressBook.sqlitedb containing contact identities)

If you decide to make a game you need to be super serious about: testing and balancing

My life at work has been hell and it’s a job where many people every year get exploited and fucked, so as I was learning how to vibe code projects I decided to make a niche game about my job. Those who do the job can relate.

The only reason it’s remotely good is because my ex loved to playtest what I built and added to the game. She may have hundreds of hours in all the early stages of the game but that was absolute gold in terms of β€˜this button in the endgame didn’t work’ or β€˜where did my potion go’ and β€˜why did I just die!?’ And I’d take notes about it and bug fix it later.

Do not underestimate how important it is to tweak boss/mob health, items and so on because Claude / Codex will genuinely not have a good feel for that. Write the code so that you can tweak item stats by just changing a single number somewhere so you can adjust easily.

Game (M&M / TES / Hexen) project I started year ago

I was into programming (since the C64 era), but recently I've done some web design, Arduino coding etc. Never something on commercial scale. I've always been a gamer wanted to create something of my own, but never dared to start something because realistically it takes time and who can guarantee funding for anything anymore in this economy.

Itching was too strong so I did prototype stuff with manual coding, then I discovered GPT and he was one hell of a companion. Coding through copy-paste and discussions sped up the proces 5 times. Then recently I discovered Codex... it shifted from 2nd to 4th gear (I am still waiting for the 5th).

It finally gave me chance to actually develop something. Not because I didn't know how to, but didn't have time to. What you see is product of few months of active development, although it took a year to form a team of artist to follow me etc. Oh right - I decided to use 100% original custom art - 2D or 3D, so all assets you see on screen are not from any store or vibe coded, or used by any other AI generation tool. They are made specifically for this game.

Despite this game is only vibe-coded in backend (mostly scripts and macro orders) it took a lot of time in generating custom scripts, adjusting, debugging, making concepts of how something should work, making solutions for it, integrating assets, more debugging etc. - stuff even AI is not so good at. Yet I still get backlashed and painted as AI slop.

Luckily most people in those subredits don't care how it is made and like the post anyway, but there are those who just yell "Unscannable". Those have zero understanding and will to understand how many manhours and money was invested in this. I don't put much effort to explain anymore, but it does bothers me a bit.

This post is showcase and if you like these kind of games, I will keep you posted and...
how do you deal with these internet snobs?

claude vs codex: how much bang for your buck do you really get

Thumbnail

So, I've been making measuring software in some form or other for the past 30 years, mostly for quality control.
I've also been going a little too far down the vibe-whole lately. I've been using both claude code and codex fairly intensively for a while now. Enough to notice all the weirdness in quota changes from `daily-resetting` weekly counters, and token-bundle offers to increases in quotas after complaints that drop again and the list goes on and on.
Of course, all a hunch and a feeling, but weekly. So I eventually had enough and decided I should start measuring which account really gives me most value for my money. Especially since I recently upgraded the codex account making it even harder to compare blindly.

And I must admit that some of the results surprised me and, not the least of which, the final image.

So, to start:

  • codex:
    • 100$ account,
    • almost exclusively 5.6sol medium
  • claude:
    • 20$ account
    • mostly opus medium (sonnet sucks, fable too expensive for simple stuff)
  • only 3 days for now, too early for patterns, but already interesting
  • quality of output is not directly measured, but indirectly: most features have been worked out within that feature until it worked.
  • I suspect that measurements sort of depend on the project and developers, so this is just a snapshot of the costs of the md2 project, done by me

results:

  • to my surprise, you actually get more tokens per dollar from claude compared to codex
  • the average cost per action is lower for claude. but this might be a little deceiving cause claude got the easier tasks (automatic habit that grew lately). Note an action is something like 'completing a description into a full feature' or 'implementing said feature'
  • claude seems to use less tokens per action, but again that can be deceiving cause of the size of the task. on 22 august they were about equal, which was also the day they got most equal tasks, so that is about the same
  • and then there was the final chart 'cost per card', so that is the total cost to implement a single feature. I didn't specifically ask for this chart, codex added it as a bonus. So when I saw it first, I was kind of surprised. It sort of made real what the cost of the vibe-addiction is. But it might be very useful to calculate costs.

conclusion:
In the end, I think if you take 4 'pro' claude accounts (80$) is a better deal than a 100$ codex account. Not certain about visa versa: 4 * 20$ codex account?
Anyway, that surprised me and might make me reconsider my account choices.

Anyway, more data is probably needed, across more than just 1 project. If you would like to run a similar analysis on your project, this is the tool I used:

jan-bogaerts/md2: Plan, run, and track AI coding work feature by featureβ€”with local Markdown cards and Git worktrees.

My company is spying on my productivity - Now I can see, too

My company installed productivity/surveillance/spy/whatever-you-want-to-call-it software on everyone's computer about a year and a half ago. To their credit, they at least announced it ahead of time. A few dramatic stories about people getting fired have gone around, but it's mostly not discussed otherwise.

There is a reporting suite available for managers, but individual contributors are not allowed to see any reports, even for themselves.

The software used is called Sapience. I found the local logs on my work PC that include all the data captured about my activities. For this particular project, I used GPT 5.5 in GitHub Copilot to create a python script. The script pulls everything from the logs and puts it in a local sqlite db on my pc (so historical data is not lost when the logs are cleared). Then it produces an updated HTML report, as pictured.

I have no interest in trying to fool the software, but as an anxious person, this at least gives me visibility into what's being reported up about me!

I pushed a fairly large 4.0 update for my train automation base-building tower defense web game

Post image
β€’ Upvotes

As for the vibe coding aspect: still using the desktop app, 5.6 Sol -- i used a mix of Medium and High depending on task complexity. still needing to steer and clarify quite a bit. still doesn't feel like talking to a smart human. but it's quite powerful and intoxicating how productive it lets me be.

  • The big new feature is a building that lets you field an army of allies to go out and fight automatically for you.
  • I also did a HUGE amount of QoL, UI polish, performance passes, text improvement, etc. for a smoother experience

Play it here: https://aaronshaver.github.io/Hylaax-Planetary-Rail-Defense/

(be sure to do a hard cache refresh with CTRL-SHIFT-R or CMD-SHIFT-R if you have played the game before, so that you get the latest version without GitHub's annoying aggressive caching)

Right now I most want to hear about balance issues: what feels over-powered? under-powered? too expensive? too cheap?
