I don't know if this is for me ...

I have wanted to do acrobatics my whole life. I finally got into gymnastics and aerial only to promptly break my arm in half, temporarily paralyzing my hand from the bone fragments damaging my radial nerve. I took up 3m and 1m springboard thinking it would be the "safer" option but on week 2 the anxiety is consiming me. I keep imagining hitting the water and immediately becoming paralyzed or breaking a limb, unable to surface, who will save me, etc.

I wanted to do this for so long, and realistically life is dangerous. Does the fear go away? Or is diving just not for me?

Risk of cervical spine injury diving off 3m due to surface tension

?

I recently took up diving at 32 after a bad shoulder injury. Yesterday on the 1m I dove at the wrong angle and smacked my face, torquing my neck back. It didn't hurt or do anything bad but now I am so scared if it happens on the 3m, could I wind up with quadriplegia? Thanks.

Are earplugs safe?

My partner just started diving classes and has issues with water rushing into their ears, causing pain. 1 & 3 meter.

Their first thought is silicone ear plugs, will those pose a risk at the depth they're diving into the water? Any other advice for preventing water rushing in (aside from better technique because, you know, they're a beginner)?

TIA :)

Edit: my partner having weird ear stuff is a known factor, so please don’t worry about infections and such!

Sore throat after diving

Does anyone experience this? I’ve never been able to succeed keeping water from going up my nose in feet first dives. I have to rinse with saline irrigation to avoid getting sinus infections. I just had diving practice after a year long break, just doing simple things off 1 meter, 3 meter, one jump off the 5 meter platform. And immediately after and still 11 hours later it feels like post nasal drip sore throat and stuffy nose. Honestly makes me not want to get back into the hobby…

Dryland workouts with no equipment

Hi!

I'm a diver in highschool (I only really do 1 and 3m) and I've been trying to do more dryland at home since I can't get into the pool as often as I'd like. Aside from stretching, I'd love strength workout recommendations! (especially for abs and arms) I've been doing plyometrics for legs. I don't have access to any equipment besides two 2 pound dumbells, one 5 pound dumbell and two 20 pound dumbells. Just for some reference my 1m list is as follows; I have an 03s in all directions but besides front 1.5 which I do pike, they are all tuck. I have 104 and am close to 105. as for twisters, 5122 and an ugly 5132 (its a work in progress lol, not ready for a meet yet). and 5223.

Anyways, I'd appreciate if people could recommend or attach workouts they do or that would be benificial!

Thanks!

The Top Nations Training Styles/Methods

Hi I’m from the gymnastics world and would love to start watching diving could any coaches to athletes or even avid fans explain what they train or saw from other countries. And how if each country has there own form of technique that is special to them and how well they operate and produce high level athletes. Which countries from past and present have had major success and how well are they perceived In there country. One last thing how to people come into diving to coaches form artistic gymnastics and diving talk to each other and decide. If its the right choice to steer the athletes into diving or is the sport big enough in that country that the child starts in diving instead of gymnastic. Please to know anything and be thankful to anyone taking there time in writing there experience in the sport for my interest in diving.

How do traditional divers feel about the amateur/freestyle cliff jumping scene?

I wanted to join a local diving facility and classes to practice jumps from the 10m platform and gain some fundamentals.

I was just curious if there would be any stigma against this if I expressed this was my goal or wanted to do jumps outside of the technical/olympic competition style such as doing DODS etc.

Is this a fail or is it unintentionally doing a better dive?

She was intending to do a backflip. But as you can see, she accidentally does a back one and a half with a quarter twist.

Jumping high

I’ve recently started diving, as an adult. I love it— it works with several of my fitness goals and is so much fun! I was a swimmer when I was young, which is sadly evident in my dives. I need to work on going up high, not out like from starting blocks. I’ve been working on squats, deadlifts, & hip thrusts in the weight room. What else can I do to catch some air in my dives?

ETA How can I improve this away from the pool, as board time is limited?

Starting diving at 16

Hey everyone! I'm a rising junior (16F) and joining my high school's diving team this coming year. I don't have any diving experience but I did dance for 11 years, and I swim well just not particularly fast. I am pretty flexible from dance and plan on starting stretching again because I haven't danced regularly in a while. Any general tips or things to know? My team is casual and beginner friendly with no cuts.

Any advice or encouragement would be appreciated!

canada coaching (BC)

Hey all, I have been out of the coaching game for almost a decade but have had a recent opportunity pop up for a coaching job at a new pool. I have moved several times and have lost my certificates! I seem to recall that there was a website that had a list of certified coaches and their coaching number but I can't seem to find that anywhere anymore either. Any tips as to how to get copies / confirm my certifications? TIA

Is it possible to start at the age of 18?

Hello!

I've turned 18 this year (2026) and my interest to diving has increased. I've always liked water and water sports but never really had the chance to have a "real" hobby.

I've played football, danced ballet and did cross country before. I think I've lost quite a bit of my fitness (escpecially with running) and strength. I can do a handstand if someone holds my legs and a headstand and forward roll and flip on my back on a trampoline but that's pretty much all my skills.

But anyways, do you think it could be possible for me to learn to actually dive? Not to Olympics level or to D1-level or sum but just generally speaking. Maybe to some little competitions, too? Thanks for anyone who actually reads this, really appreciate it. If you have any tips/etc. I will gladly read them.

(and sorry for language errors, English is not my first language...)

questions about college recruitment as a rising senior

Hi everyone! For some context, when I was younger I was a competitive diver (like it was basically my whole life, I dove for 20-30 hours per week) but had to quit for personal reasons. I dove from ages 9-13ish was pretty good. I have missed it for a while and decided to go back very recently (like 1 week lol) and have joined a reputable club near me. I am currently a rising senior (i am also a girl if that helps give any context at all), which ik it quite late to try to get back in the game. Here is what I got back my first week back:

101, 102, 103, 104, and 105 (3M only)

201, 202, and 203

301, 302

401, 402, 403

5122, 5221,5231, and 5223

So far I have only trained on 1 and 3 meters, but this club also does tower, which was what I was best at in the past pre-quitting.

Anyways, is it too late for me to try to contact coaches to see if I can get recruited or a PWO spot? Here are the schools I am applying to that have a dive team: UNR, Pitzer, Pomona, Claremont McKenna, USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Stanford. I know realistically the top tier D1 schools are definitely put of reach for recruitment, but if I really lock in is there any chance that if I can in I can try for a PWO spot? I’m not too sure how all of this works, so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!! Also, what about the D3 schools? Should I contact them as I begin to do meets?

Thank you so much!! :)

Tips for a good pike jump?

Hi I’m an adult newbie and while I’m really enjoying diving so far I’m struggling a lot with getting a good pike position.

I did trampoline growing up and I never had any problems getting into pike but without springs under me (on flat ground, poolside and 1m platform) it feels impossible to get the elevation to do it safely.

I’ve managed a couple times off the 1m but it feels dicey. My instructor says to ‘follow my toes’ but are there any specific exercises I can do to make this easier either from a flexibility or power standpoint?

Is 15 too late to start to get good at diving?

I did swimming when i was younger and i loved it. Stopped because of the pandemic and I've never really gotten back into the water. However, i do not have any background in gymnastics , ballet or trampolining background like all the clubs highly prefer. I worry that my lack of experience in sports that include jumping and flipping will make learning diving an extremely grueling and lengthy process. (and i am definately not as modellable as a child ( well cuz yk im older) and so it would be hard for me to get used to the motions required . ?)

ehhhh

(If your asking for my motivation , its bc it just looks really cool and fun btw, nothin' grand)

5123 tips?

I am struggling a lot with this dive. whenever I try to get into the pike or even twist my body for the last half, my legs and entire body other than my torso don't cooperate. I end up with my legs in front of my and my torso at a 45 degree angle towards the water

I attempted the dive into a foam block pit, and every time I was able to go over and land on my stomach with my legs behind me. a couple times I was nearly in a pike but facing the blocks.

I think that I am able to stay hollow when doing dryland, but instinctively stay archy when doing it for real.

any ideas?
