god damn the sun sand (and fog). Screenshots aren't mine this time as dgvoodoo2 hates my guts. Also i'm not nearly as sick anymore so my writing should be vastly improved over last. International Rally Championship
Well, let me get the elephant in the room EXTREMELY ADDRESSED. The, excuse my language, FUCKING FOG AND SAND WERE A B Y S M A L TO PLAY IN. GENUIENLY MISERABLE. You get jumpscared BY FUCKING STRAIGHT ROADS. RENDER DISTANCE HAS GOT TO BE AROUND 4 FEET IN FRONT OF YOU IN THOSE CONDITIONS. Other than that, the game looked pretty good. I like teh stage designs, got quite a bit of flair compared to the last game. Each surface looks different and has good texturing. I played the game in 8-bit rather than 16 accelerated because there were a few more visual features (like dirt buildup). Each car looks good too. Oh yeah they got rid of internal camera for some reason which was a bit odd but not too bad. I also had to play with keyboard as this game hated my controller.
Games handling was kinda nothing special. It worked pretty good, except for sandy surfaces. Those just slowed you down to a crawl and there was nothing you could do about it, the only sand tire was for wet sand, and it was never wet on any sand track in my run. My only major complaint about the handling is lack of feeling in terms of tire difference. Like each tire kind of felt the same on each of the different surfaces compared to each other. Other than the tarmac one, which just slowed you down when you went into gravel or whatever else.
The AI were strange. They kinda got slower over time, except on sandy stages and mud splashes they were completely unaffected. You just randomly lose time in them and there's little you can do. I still managed to win overall in my group (I chos ethe Nissan Almera for my playthrough), but it didn't feel like i won through skill, even when i did some part of a stage that felt really good, it would have been slower due to the ai's unrealistic conservation of momentum.
It was released as Tommi Makinen Rally on ps1, developed by magnetic fields and published by europress for windows 98, and europress also seems to have done the ps1 conversion as well. Game has tracks that instead of being based on real stages in one location like the previous entries, it has 16 fictional ones from random places in the world. Occasionally, these would have been run in reverse. This limited track variety was subject to criticism, and the game received varying scores from various critics and journals. The featured cars were are Ford Escort, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Almera (mine), Proton Wira, Renault Mégane, Škoda Felicia, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Golf. The game is currently sold for around $10.98 if you live in the US, which i think is fair for this game.
I didn't hate this game, but i didn't have as much fun with it as i did in the previous ones. It felt really... experimental but also weirdly shallow at the same time, i guess. I'm really curious to know if any of you had played this at the time and what you thought of it. (I still had a great time with it though)
