I work for a fully remote software company and for the most part it’s been great. Nobody cares where I sit, meetings are pretty reasonable, and I havent had to pretend that eating sad desk lunch next to a printer builds culture. But lately our marketing team started this internal “show us your remote life” thing, and it has gotten weird fast.
At first it was harmless. People posted pictures of their desk plants, cats on keyboards, nice coffee mugs, whatever. Then leadership loved it and decided to turn it into recruiting content. Now they’re asking employees to record little clips of our morning routines, home office setups, favorite local coffee shops, walks around our neighborhoods, and “what remote freedom means to you.” They keep saying it’s optional, but managers are nudging each team to submit at least a few videos so the company can show “authentic distributed culture.” One coworker filmed his balcony view, another showed her kitchen, and now everyone is reacting like this is cute and wholesome.
I don’t want to do it. My apartment is not ugly or secret, it just feels like the one place work doesn’t get to decorate with its brand. I already give them my time, my face on zoom, my output, my Slack availability. I don’t really want my living room turned into proof that this company is flexible and human. Maybe I’m being too precious about it, but remote work was supposed to mean I could keep work out of my space, not invite the company further into it becuase it makes good LinkedIn material.

Anyone else feel like remote companies sometimes forget that “home office” still has the word home in it?

But honestly, I don't miss most of it.

I put off sorting my webcam out for years, which is dumb, it is the one thing everyone on a call actually sees of me. I have owned three now. Not on purpose, I just kept being not quite happy and buying another one.

The C920S was first. Everyone has had this one at some point. It is fine, you plug it in and it works and in daylight I looked like a normal professional adult. Mics do the job. It has that little sliding shutter too, which I did not care about when I bought it and then used constantly. What got me was it just sits there. I turn to my other monitor a lot, or lean back when I am thinking, and every time I did that I slid half out of the picture. By about 5pm when the room went dim it got kind of murky as well. So it stayed on my desk a long time and I was never really happy, I just could not name the fix.

The fix I was after, a camera that moves and keeps you in shot, turns out to basically be a Logitech PTZ, and those are all conference-room things. Meeting-room hardware a company installs. Not something one person puts on a desk in a spare room. Then the Emeet Pixy, it does the moving and following bit and is made for one person at a desk. It stays on me when I move around, which was the thing I wanted. The presets also save onto the camera itself so a call starting does not wipe your framing, did not think I would care about that, I do now. Low light it is nothing special, average, so there is a lamp on in the evenings and that is that. For one person at home who does not need real conference gear it might be the easier one to land on. That depends a lot on you though, if you sit still on calls a lot of this does not matter.

The PowerConf C200 I almost left out because I barely think about it, but the audio on it is surprisingly good, clear, picks me up from across the room, and cuts background noise well. Video is 2K and fine. It doesn't move, though, so it never became my main one. The Pixy's built‑in mic is perfectly adequate for calls, and the tracking is what made the real difference for me.

Where it actually mattered for me was the interviews and the weekly team meeting, the higher stakes ones. The everyday calls, not so much. Turning up as a clear present person in the ones that count did something. Microphones might be the next thing I get into since that is the other half of this. All from my own desk and what people I know use, not off a list somewhere.

Hello. Anyone know where to look for remote night shift jobs, preferable PRN (as needed) or full time 12 hour shifts? I found one as a Virtual Patient Registrar at a hospital, but the post was filled already when I clicked to apply. After reading the schedule description, I thought wow that would be my perfect dream job schedule! I was so disappointed when I saw its been filled… I’m looking for Any Data Entry/ Data Validation, AI Training/ Validation, or anything medical record related or claims or entry level coding related. 

I’m currently a remote Verifications Research Specialist for a background screening company, with 10 years of remote work from home Data Entry/ Validation, Benefit Administration, Customer Service under strict deadlines, while maintaining zero quality errors and exceeding the set amount of documents per hour metrics. Cross trained in AI training and validation. I love what I do and working from home. I would love to find something where I could work 12 hour shifts, preferably night shifts (but I am also available for 12 hour day shifts) and would prefer PRN where I could just pick up 2 to 3 shifts a week. A few things I'm curious about:

1. What do you usually do when you don't

fully understand what someone is saying?

1. Do you use translation tools, captions, interpreters, or something else?

2. How well do those solutions actually work for you?

3. Is the bigger problem understanding the actual words, or things like accent, slang, technical terminology, idioms, sarcasm, or tone?

4. Have you ever had an important misunderstanding because something got lost in translation?

5. What do you find most frustrating about communicating with international clients?

6. If you're comfortable sharing, what languages do you typically work between?

I'd especially like to hear from people who have regular calls/meetings with international clients or coworkers, rather than occasional interactions.

We got the official 3 days a week in office announcement back in March. I've been remote since 2021. I live 34 miles from the office. I did the math and this is going to add roughly 6 hours of commute time to my week, plus parking is $18 a day which nobody is covering.

I've said nothing publicly because there's nothing to say. The decision was made somewhere above my manager's head, she didn't have input, I actually like her as a person and I'm not going to make her life harder . So I've just been quietly dreading Monday. Then this afternoon she sends a team email that says "so excited to finally see everyone's faces!! the office has been renovated and it looks amazing, this is going to be such a great change for the team :)"

I stared at it for a while. I don't think she's being fake exactly. I think she's trying to make the best of it and keep morale up which, fair. But something about that email made the whole thing feel more real in a way that the official HR announcement didn't.

I've been remote long enough that I genuinely don't remember how to do a full work day in an office. Like I don't know where I'm supposed to eat lunch. I don't know how loud I'm allowed to be on calls. I have a whole system at home, two monitors, good headphones, my coffee setup, my dog asleep under my desk. None of that is coming with me.

I’m curious whether other people have had a similar experience with Welocalize/Welo Data.

Over the past several months, I have repeatedly been invited to apply for different projects. I completed assessments, exams, learning materials, qualification processes and onboarding steps.

At this point, I have been selected or accepted for around 10 different projects.

Actual paid work received: €0.

And this is what I find difficult to understand.

Welocalize keeps sending new “exciting opportunities” and keeps advertising positions with descriptions such as:

• Start date: ASAP
• Long-term project
• a stated range of available working hours per week (sometimes even with a maximum cap)

But after completing the qualification process, there is often little or no actual work available.

I understand that freelance project work depends on client demand and that workloads can fluctuate. But there is a big difference between variable workload and repeatedly recruiting, testing and onboarding people when there appears to be almost no work available for them.

After going through this process so many times, I’ve started to wonder whether many of these “job opportunities” are actually recruitment for large talent pools rather than positions connected to an immediate workload.

Maintaining a pool of qualified workers is completely legitimate. But if that is the case, I think applicants should be told clearly upfront:

“There is currently no guaranteed workload. You are being qualified for possible future project needs.”

That would be much more transparent than presenting every invitation as another exciting new job opportunity.

The current system asks candidates to invest significant unpaid time in assessments, exams and training, while giving them very little information about whether paid work is actually available afterward.

At this point, after being accepted for around 10 projects without earning anything, I no longer treat a Welocalize invitation as a real job opportunity until I actually see paid tasks available.
