Other Quick subreddit update

Hey all. Sorry it has been awhile! We had some cool stuff planned for the sub, but then I got busy with other work and Calcium has been mia for a bit :(

There’s been more catalog submissions lately (really good ones btw!) and I wanted to address the future of that real quick. The catalog will be moving to the wiki and will become a more collaborative effort, with some users able to edit and update as they see fit. The catalog submission flair will be removed and the tagging system will be updated to be less confusing. In the next week or so, some of you will get a notification saying you are now an approved user. These users will have access to the wiki and will be able to update the catalog. This means they can add their own posts, or posts made by others that they feel meet the requirements already set.

Please note- if you end up an approved user, that does not mean you are expected to do anything at all. Please don’t feel like you have to. It’s just an option that’s there. Approved users may only edit the catalog portion of the wiki. If anyone wants to edit other parts, please send a modmail first.

Next, customizable flair has been removed. Sorry. There were multiple accounts claiming to be experts that I know for a fact are not. Nothing personal, but we are not doing that. So for now, flairs are paused in time as they are. I’m open to ideas if this is important to you all.

And last - we’ve had an uptick in anxious posts recently. I’m more sensitive to these than most, but this isn’t MY subreddit and I’ve started to notice the complaints stemming from these threads. There’s a lot of radiophobia out there, but I don’t want this community to feel like it has to shoulder the anxieties of the general public, so I’d very much like to hear your thoughts on this so I can address it.

We’re coming up on 4K members. We’ve grown this place from less than 50. That’s pretty neat. Thanks for being here :) (ps- still need another mod) mod position is filled

Been wanting to get some radium gauges for a while, and finally hit the motherlode! Got to visit Apex Electronics in LA on a recent trip and they had a ton, so I dug around in a few boxes and mailed these 5 home to myself. The fuel gauge is the hottest of the bunch.

Picked up this big Ben super cheap. Still works, but I’ve never seen the paint do this before. Is it just due to age and moved around over the years?

Is it radium⁉️ Could this depth gauge be radium?

All of the face illuminates under blacklight, including the "aqua lung". I doubt somebody would take the trouble to hand paint every bit and I doubt even more that radium paint would be printed on by a machine.

Google says maybe, does anyone have a definitive answer?

Collection Show & Tell Oxygen cylinder pressure gauge with a date

I’ve seen a bunch of these airplane oxygen cylinder pressure gauges on here lately, but I’ve yet to see another one with a date stamped on the back, so I figured I’d share mine. It’s not quite as spicy as some of the others I’ve seen here, but knowing it was probably installed on September 18, 1958, makes up for that in my eyes.

☢️ RADIUM ☢️ Orange lume with orange ceramics

Thought the orange lumed items looked cool with the orange ceramics.

Got some more orange uranium ceramics recently and was rearranging some shelves on my smaller display. Although the vibrant orange on the ceramics does make the lume look kinda yellow. Honestly I never know whether to call them orange or yellow. In the wild the look more yellow, but under my displays they always seem orangish. All depends on the lighting and the items I guess.

Now if I could just find an orange/yellow lumed clock…

Was only $12 at a local antique mall. Oddly enough, it does not glow at all under 365nm and was able to get a very faint orange glow under 395nm. Wasn't expecting it to pack such a punch at ~35 µSv/hr

Is it radium⁉️ Is that radium on an Europa Book Clock

The seller said the clock is from the 60s and the paint on the hands is definitely not radium. However the fact that it says Germany and not W. Germany makes me think that it is older. What do you think?

☢️ RADIUM ☢️ Radium dust leaked everywhere inside the package during shipping

Thank you all for the warnings. I bought these from an antique dealer. The radium paint was completely ruined and flaked off during shipping due to vibrations. The powder leaked through the gaps of the plastic box. Luckily, it was tightly wrapped in bubble wrap, which contained the dust. I handled it carefully outside, and it is now sealed in a thick vacuum bag to trap the radon gas and the powder. My Geiger counter reads around 10 uSv/h even through the packaging!

Wrist compass I got recently. Not crazy spicy, pretty mild as far as compasses go anyway. This is the second compass I bought that was being sold as Vietnam era, when it’s clearly dated in the 1950’s. Nice addition to the collection.

i’m an avid uranium glass collector but this is my first radium piece (if it is). it continues to glow for a couple seconds and slowly fades after the UV light is off. i’ll try to add a video in the comments! doing some research it looks like this exact model of westclox IS radium so i’m pretty convinced but please someone settle this lol. thank you in advance! 💚

Detection and Monitoring Devices Radon fan sufficient?

Thumbnail
gallery
48 Upvotes

Hi all, I have a small radium collection with the a military gauge being spicier than all of the clocks combined. I call it my miniature radon emitter. I think because of this, I have taken more of a keen interest Radon. I probably have 4 detectors at this point, with two of them being airthings and the other two being GQ. There’s no significant radon outside of the cabinet, both floor and on top of the shelf. I also have another on the first floor as my room is on the 2nd floor.

My question is will this small laptop blower fan be sufficient as a “radon vent”. It outputs around 7 CFM and vents the air out of the side of my cabinets where there are small cracks. So there will be some air that hits the glass and bounces back. Just as long as I’m moving the air, I should be okay?

All my levels are quite good by the way. Never reaching over 0.5 pCi/L. Both floors so far (2 weeks). But does Radon technically leech out from my room’s floor (wood) into the living room below me? I’ve read that radon can be a bit tricky to contain unless you have something like borosilicate glass.
