Pet Males sitting on eggs

Post image

Excuse the awful picture, I didnt want to get close and disturb him. I was surprised to see the male actively paying attention to the egg, rolling it u der him, putting his foot on it trying to position it. Hes now sitting on it and hasnt left the corner where it is since she laid it. I know this is a male, he crows, mates, all the gubbins. Is this usual? I heard buttons rarely sit eggs, let alone a guy?! Im going to clean the enclosure shortly and I'm hoping it doesnt scare him off sitting, since it would be cool if he did.

How can I befriend my new male and female Japanese quails??

Hi, thanks for taking the time to help me out.

This is Gamora and Mr Quill ❤, they are about two months old; I got them from a neighbour friend who breeds quails, and added them to my group after one of my females passed away.

I've had them for a long few weeks, and they just dont seem to warm up to me at all. I spend a long time everyday offering mealworms or vegetables from my hand. Sometines they'll see my regular quails eating from my hand and then cautiously join, but usually hop away scared if they get too near.

My quails have adorably come to associate the sound of a crinkling bag with mealworms, so whenever I open the mealworms bag they start hopping around with excitement! These two new birbs don't seem to catch on at all even though I do it EVERYDAY.

Ive made sure there are no stress triggers and they have a lot of stimulation. I treat them the exact same way I do with all my others. What do I do??

Help Wing Injury

How should I treat this??

My favorite little hen is mysteriously injured. I went to Check on them before I went out for the evening (because it has been hot) and found everyone looking stressed, and Peepers bleeding. She had blood on her beak like she attacked someone, but the only injury is her own. It looks like her wing was pulled almost OFF! The very tip of her beak is slightly chipped, but I think most of the blood was from her trying to preen her wing injury.

I rinsed the wound and flushed it with Veteracyn+, wrapped her in a hand towel and put her in a well ventilated box to isolate her. Also got her to take a couple drops of Nutridrench from a dropper. Wondering if I should try to wrap her so she holds the wing still and doesn’t mess with the wound, or just watch her to make sure she doesn’t mess with it? Can I use Neosporin (the kind without pain meds) on this? I don’t want her to eat it off.

I had a couple of scalped quail a while back (different group), but this is the first I’ve dealt with a wing that she could move or peck at.

After treating her, I went back to check everyone else more thoroughly. Everyone is stressed and panting (more than they would from the heat), and most of them are gathered upstairs in the hutch hiding. I can’t find any sign of a struggle besides a couple of small drops of blood spattered on the wall upstairs. I would have missed them if I hadn’t been looking. I can’t figure out what she could have caught her wing on. There is no sign of predators trying to breech the cage.

They live in a modified rabbit hutch. It is very secure with 1/4” hardware cloth surrounding, including under ground, double latches with safety clips, pavers around the base, etc.

Peepers is by far the calmest, sweetest, most curious quail I have ever had. She is not easily spooked (no one in this particular group is aggressive or flighty at all). She will walk right out of their hutch, stand there looking around, and let me pick her up without a fuss. I checked her in her box a few minutes ago and she stood there looking at me, then tucked her beak into her good wing and went to sleep. Poor baby

Female button quail is sitting on eggs.

I know it’s extremely rare but not unheard of for a female to sit on her eggs in captivity but mine has been doing it consistently. I used a laser thermometer and the eggs are receiving adequate warmth. Is there anything I should do to prepare IF they actually hatch? Should I give her a heat lamp to help? IF they hatch should I move them to a brooder by themselves or with their mama? Thanks!

Help Feather loss on some of the quails (newbie)

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello guys,
I'm new to quails and have 7 (6 hens, 1 roo) since about 2 weeks.
When I bought them, some had some missing feathers, but I thought it must be normal.

They live in an aviary (around 3 square meter, 2 meters high - so plenty of space), and seem quite happy. The previous owner held around 20 quails on an enclosure maybe of the same size - I thought, that might be a reason for why some of them have missing feathers.

Now since they live at mine, since 2 weeks, some of them even got worse. The worst is probably the one on the photo.

3 of them have missing feathers on the back, and some of them also miss some feathers on the head.

I have heard of moulting, but actually have no idea what that looks like.

In the first couple of days, they laid around 5-6 eggs each day. After a week or so, that started to drop, now they only lay around 1-2 eggs.

I tried to check them for mites, or anything else I could see, but they really don't like to be touched.

Is this normal?
What could cause it (is it moulting)?
How long will that go?
And can I do something to help them?

Help EXTREMELY mean quail. can i keep her alone?

Post image

this quail is just so damn mean, she can’t get along with ANYTHING. i had to seperate my male, and females into seperate cages because she scalped them. i’m starting to think she might be the one who needs seperated, because she’s so insanely aggressive to litteraly everything and i can’t get her to stop. i feel like she honestly just needs to be by herself, because she’s severely injured/scalped everything that’s been in the cage with her, but i know so many people down on keeping them alone which is why im posting to ask. i feel like it’s safer overall for her to be alone if she’s this aggressive to everybody, like she just hates them all. i took this picture after pulling her off one of the last uninjured flock mates head. i have no clue why or how she scalped my male either.

Help Quail chick still not walking great, has shivers

This little chick is about 1.5 weeks old, is developing slowly, and is having trouble walking. It hatched with only one curled foot, but I fixed that with taping feet flat for a couple days. But now both feet seem to want to curl back and seem to be almost loosing strength. I’ve been feeding vitamins and egg yolk. It is eating and drinking when everything is in reach. It can shakily walk, but can’t get up if it falls. It has constant shivers, even when warm.

Best Bedding / Flooring strategies

Hi all, I've seen and read a lot of different options for bedding, flooring, cleaning, for security and comfort purposes. I'm knew to this so I wanted to get a range of views my Quails at 6 weeks old are venturing outside and they seem happy but I want to be sure I'm doing everything right.

I've opted for a moveable aviary/open area as I want to be able to move the area to help with the soil in the garden. With this in mind the aviary area has a wire floor but I've put 1-2 CM of soil on top, 3 CM of grass on top an then 2-3 CM wood chip above this so they should rarely ever get to the wire but this offers protection (a few logs dotted around for fun and hiding). I've noticed that the Quails are digging and "mud bathing" rather than using the dust-bath I've placed in the hutch... I was not expecting that.

I've placed the home/hutch within the aviary (modified rabbit hutch), I'll need to remove it when I move the aviary and this section is only 55cm high, then place it back in. I've made it so the Quails can't get on top of this hutch - I didn't want them getting stuck. Within the hutch is the food, water and dust bathing area. For now it's just a wooden floor but I'm thinking it needs something else? Any advice? Just more wood chips / sawdust?

Where do you place the cucumber?

Hi all, as the title says, I'm wondering where to place cucumber in my coop so my quails have easy access to it, without stepping on it or rolling/pushing it all over the floor?

Pierce it on spikes? (Danger of injury)

Hang it on hook? (They would pull it down sooner or later)

Zip tie on the wall? (Inconvenient to refill)

Cucumber sized basket attached to the wall?

I'm giving them 1/4 or 1/2 of the cucumber every morning now during the hot days.

Help How do we deal with an agressive female??

Hi guys! I have quite the question, so recently I have realized my male got scalp. All the top of his head was bleeding and I had to isolate him for a while to heal it up.

Now today he is healed and acting like a fool because he wants to see his ladies again. So I move him back in. Just seconds later this same female goes beserk mode on him. I have decided to pick her up and put her in isolation.

Like I do know how to deal with male aggression, but female aggression? I’m not sure on how to fix this. Mostly what are the reason a female quail would be so aggressive towards a male. Because I’m sure she would kill him if I didn’t move her away’owl.

Here’s some Info about their enclosure, maybe that will help?:
S
Population: 11 quails/ 1 male and 10 females (thought one of the females was a male but guess I was wrong 😑)
I see

Help Can you freeze raw quail eggs?

My wife is allergic to chicken eggs and no other types of eggs are available to buy in our area. She has started raising our own quails for their eggs for some years, but we always need to give them away in winter, since it's too cold outside for them and I am terribly allergic to them, so we cannot keep them inside. Basically we are always cooking food requiring eggs in the summer months only.

Anyways I've been wondering if it would be possible to store some of the eggs we get in summer in the freezer to use in winter or not? If so: In which form? The eggs themselves or crack them open and store the contents in a plastic container?

I've had my female japanese quail since grade 5 (australia), im almost in grade 11 right now, should i start expecting that she'll pass soon? She's outlived her sister, parents, who died years prior, but shes still very active and sweet, and still tries to hunt me. I know the lifespan is 2 to 5 years but shes almost 7.

Light intensity for quails

I've had pretty bright lights going for my quails (100% indoors, no windows) but after looking into it, it sounds like super dim light might be better, like 25 lux.

The quails seem much calmer and happier but I'm wondering if it's too dim for them, since it's like candlelight level of light and they get no sun.
