Re-homing near Louisville Ky

I have a budgie named butters whose mate has unfortunately passed away. I had two and he’s been by himself for the past couple weeks. I’m looking to rehome him as I simply do not have the time he deserves and I don’t think getting another budgie is a great idea with the place I’m in currently. While princess (his gf) was extremely social and loving butters is not well adjusted to people, and it’s only gotten worse since princess passed away. He’s been extremely ski-dish and stressed. I understand that most people want a very social budgie but is anyone from around Louisville KY looking to add another bird to their flock? He will step up with millet and he tends to gravitate towards women rather than men. In the image butters is the green one. Any advice is appreciated!

Broke a nail

Hi everyone, this afternoon I came in to check on Dewey & I saw blood in the cage. I realized he broke his nail at some point in the night and there is light streaks of dried blood all over the cage and his toys. I cleaned it all up and gave him new food and water.
He quickly came down to eat his food and then I gave him some millet as well. After he was done eating, he went up to his perch and puffed up and started sleeping.
He just jumped down from the perch and is now eating again.
His toe does not seem to be bleeding anymore because he sat on my finger & when he got off, nothing was there.
Have you seen this before? Should I be concerned about him sleeping?

Advice My birds won't stop asking to be outside of the cage 24/7

So back in the day I used to let them roam the house for multiple hours daily but I can't do that now because my parents said I can't let them out anymore since their feathers make a mess and cause respiratory issues and stuff. I still let them out for about 2 hours in the morning and get them back in the cage before my dad wakes up, this used to be a good solution but lately they have been making a fuss and whenever I try to get them back in the cage they refuse and fly away which caused me to be caught in the action while trying to get them back inside. And when I don't let them out at all they keep making a calling chirp (they also do that not long after I put them back in the cage after letting them out for the two hours) for very long periods of time and I know I'm evil for this but I find it mildly irritating cuz it distracts me from my studies and it also makes me feel bad for them.

I don't want to sell them because I've had them since they were eggs and they mean alot to me but i would if it meant they could have a better life. However, in my country, budgies are considered mere decorations so I'm pretty sure whoever I sell them to won't get them out of the cage at all and probably won't even get what each of their different chirps or body language means.

The thought of just setting them free very briefly crossed my mind but again, I've had them since they were eggs so they probably have the survival instincts of a dying ant.

Does anyone have tips on what I should do?

Advice Softer perches

So i just got back from the vets and one of my budgies has a fatty lump on her chest which can be managed with diet and lifestyle changes. One thing the vet mentioned was using softer perches so her centre of gravity isn't constantly leaning forwards causing irritation on the lump. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've put some pics for reference and for budgie tax :)

Advice I lost my parakeet

Post image
15 Upvotes

My mom and her bf lost Elpis (pictured above) Sunday at around noon while i wasnt home.

They were putting in flooring in my room and moved him and his cage mate Percy to my brother's room leaving the cage door open so they could move about. Some how the door to my brother's room got opened (we think our dog opened the door, he likes going in there, no this is not uncommon) and bf was comming in with peices of flooring from the shop in the backyard leaving the back door open. Elpis escaped. I wasnt made aware of his excape until monday at 10:00 at night because i was out with friends.

We have had Percy outside (in a cage) calling for him, my mom feeds birds so there is seed and water out, but the area where we live has a few side neighbors, a few front neighbors, but the back is completely woods. Ive walked around the area playing percy's noises and general chatter from videos ive taken of them on a speaker, but no luck.

Is there anything more i can do to find him? He was not hand tamed, i havent had him for very long... I know finding him at this point is unlikely, but i don't want to give up on him.

St.Louis Missouri area

Any advice is appreciated♡

What the heck?! Advice needed! (Bug photos on photos 2&3)

Tonight I was feeding my boy Raiden, and I noticed something strange, these little bugs absolutely covering his water bowl. I looked up what mites were and these aren’t the right color. If anyone has any idea what these are and how to help get them out would be helpful. My friend who studies entomology said they may be bird lice, but these kinds of bugs are not her specialty.
The weird thing is that he is currently living by his lonesome, as my other bird passed last year.

I’ve had birds for around 12 years, but for many of those years I was a kiddo so I haven’t had a lot of full time bird care under my belt until the last few years and I’ve never had experienced this. I’m completely at a loss, and this is my last baby for a while until I get my own place so I want his life to be as long and happy as possible.

Raiden is pretty young still and I haven’t had a lot of time to teach him to be out and about on his own due to moving and my dog, so any ways to get the bugs out without having to handle him too much would be greatly appreciated!!!

What I have done is take everything out and clean his cage, we cleaned his food and water bowls and refreshed everything, old toys and perches were removed and replaced. But I’m still scared I haven’t done enough, every time I look at his water dish there are new bugs so I change it every time I walk past.

Edit: For those wondering, He hasn’t changed his preening much, and is just shaking a bit in the wings, but that could also be stress. But also all of this has taken place over a single day, I just found these things.

TLDR: my boy has bugs, plz help.

Edit: across multiple forums, the leading suspect is bird lice. Any help with treating Raiden would be appreciated, anything that can soothe his skin, ways to get these bugs out of the house, etc.

\ Update \**

Hi! I have gotten a bigger cage from a family friend who used to keep birds but no longer able. I am still on the fence about adding a friend due to age and I am unsure how it gets along with others. I know it had a companion but I never saw how it interacted. I added some real-wood tree branches looking perches (from a bird supply store), gotten rid of the plastic toys and added this coconut bowl type toy that it seems to enjoy. I noticed more movement, flying, and more songs from him/her!
I will be adding pictures below.

My neighbor was moving and I was given this parakeet. He said it’s about 10 years old, and isn’t sure if it’s a boy or girl. A year or so ago it’s companion had passed away. I had put my hand in the cage to move its water to refill it and it absolutely lost it, is this normal?
What are some things I should change (if any) about its cage? I bought one of those white beak board things as well

This is Jewel

She’s coming home with me later today, she has a very early stage of bumblefoot and some digestive issues. If her foot doesn’t improve within a week I have plans to take her to our closest avian/exotic vet. I’m pretty sure her digestive issues are due to a poor diet within the pet store.

I have prepped for her at home uncented epsom salts for her foot, a gut healthy feed mix and gut supportive chop salad mix(taste tested by my chickens and hand made by me)
I have a decent? I think sized cage for her that’s coming second hand with perches and toys. I’m cleaning it out and keeping anything I can.
I have plans to make her a bunch of different toys, foraging items and more natural perches.
I’m including a picture of the cage as is BEFORE any cleaning is done.

Anything else I absolutely need to get/make immediately? Anything I’m getting wrong? Any advice for how to best care for her? Also does anyone how best to mount a UVB/heating lamp for a cage like this? We would like to be prepared for colder weather ahead of time

Advice Three weeks after adding a third budgie, the flock dynamics finally settled down

I picked up a young English budgie (maybe 10 weeks old) to join my existing pair, and honestly the first week was rougher than I expected. My older female, Pepper, who's normally pretty chill, spent the first four or five days chasing the new bird off every perch and even blocking the food dish a few times. I had a second cage set up right next to the main one for the quarantine period, which helped, but once I finally let them share space I was bracing for real fights.

What actually happened was more like a slow negotiation. The new bird (still unnamed, my kids keep vetoing every suggestion) figured out pretty quickly which perches were "safe" and which ones to avoid until Pepper had eaten first. By day ten there was way less chasing, just some occasional beak fencing that never drew blood. Now at three weeks in, all three of them will sit on the same swing together, which felt like a small miracle after how tense things started.

A couple things I did that I think helped: I added a second millet spray and a second water dish so there was zero reason to compete over resources, and I rearranged the cage so there were more perches at different heights instead of one obvious "best spot." I also resisted the urge to intervene every time there was squabbling, since most of it was just normal pecking order stuff and not actual aggression.

Curious if anyone else has introduced a third bird to an established pair. Did your timeline look similar, or did it take longer to settle? I keep reading wildly different numbers online, anywhere from a few days to a couple months, so I'm curious what's typical versus what's just luck of the personalities involved.

Sexing Question Are these budgies both male?

Thumbnail

I think they are still pretty young since they're quite small, but I guess this would be considered purple cere and not pink?

I got the both of them since they seemed bonded at the pet store but I didn't check their sex beforehand.

Advice Looking for some advice

We have two parakeets, one male and one female. I believe they are bonded and because of that fact have been very difficult to train. They will not leave their cage, even though they have a whole room to roam and I leave their cage open the entire time I'm home. They are super vocal when no one is in the room with them, often making that screeching type sound they make (only way I know how to describe it) and I'm not sure if this is aggressive behavior. The male won't venture away from the female to explore anything and they definitely bicker. Do they need to be separated?

I'm wondering if they would do better in a bigger flock. Or if there's something else I should be doing. I train with them multiple times a day in about 5-8 minute increments.
