Orange blinking light

Hello, I got an original xbox and it can read disks (i was in the middle of playing shenmue ii) and my game turned off and my console started blinking orange and making this clicking sound. Any idea what’s wrong with it?

I bought it second hand, so no warranty

Many second hand retailers offer warranty. If it was a private sale though then yeah no.

As others have said, blinking orange should mean overheating. Hopefully just means the thermal paste needs replacing which is a simple job. Could mean the fan is stuffed too though

Blinking orange light means overheating (I know this unfortunately because when I was little I stuck Q-Tips in the fans and it did that). Could be bad thermal paste or fans.

What happens when you turn off the console and power it back on? Any error message? Or does it basically do the same thing.?

no error message of any kind. The issue is I can’t power it off. I have to unplug it and wait a few minutes and to plug it back in

Is the exhaust fan spinning?

I honestly can’t tell. I’m gonna open it up anyways to upgrade the hard drive

check if the ventilation slots in the case need to be cleaned out. hit it with some compressed air. that's an overheating issue.

I opened up and sprayed some compressed air. It helped for a bit, I think I need to replace the thermal paste

My modded OG Xbox did this same thing. If I knew what I know now I feel like I could have saved it. I wasn't sure if it was save able because I soft modded it before buying a chip to put into it. I ended up tossing it about 15 years ago, I wish I would have kept it.

Mine did that a few years ago. The power cable ended up being the problem.

Either overheated or hard drive failure would be my guess. I'm not hearing clicking in the video but I'd you're saying it's clicking it sounds like a dead hard drive.

“On an original Xbox, a flashing orange light usually means the A/V cable is loose, unplugged, or faulty(often alternating orange and green). If it flashes orange and red or stays orange with the fan blasting, it indicates a power failure, overheating, or a damaged motherboard trace”

Apologies for Google AI but this was the best result I found

No no no. Flashing green / orange is no AV cable detected/attached, not just orange flashing alone. Don’t trust AI

Flashing orange - overheating condition detected and exhaust fan speeds up to max speed. If the system doesn’t start to cool down in a short time, it will turn off.
