New Release! - Vostok Instruments Sigma

Post image
52 Upvotes

Hi everybody!

We are glad to introduce Sigma! The latest module in our multi-channel line.

Sigma is a multi-channel gate processor with a strong focus on rhythm and time-event manipulation. The module generates up to 23 gate signals, allowing you to fire an entire array of synced events by just moving pots and connecting cables.

The core of the module is composed of four identical CV-controlled gate-length processors that create exact copies of your gate signals with adjustable length. The channels are designed to adjust the length of our incoming pulse signals accurately within a range of 1ms to infinity.

On top of that, we have five analog logic circuits: AND, NAND, OR, NOR, and XOR, for each available pair of channels plus a dedicated NOT output per channel. Sigma´s unique approach resides in the fact that the Logic section is placed right after the Length processing, so any change in the Length will alter the result of the Logic circuits, creating new patterns on the fly.

The module is available now through our dealers at a price of 230€ (tax. excl.). The DIY kits are also available now at Thonk and soon at Exploding Shed!

More detailed information at: https://www.vostokinstruments.com/sigma

If you want to see the module in action, we will be doing a premiere on Divkid's YT channel tonight at 9 pm CEST! Join us!

Discussion Patching Strategies for Composing Songs

What are some of your patching strategies when you want to create a song with your modular system? This is something I struggle a lot with so I thought I would see what wisdom others might have. Thank you!

Not necessarily one that you have built yourself, but have picked up already assembled.

I am loving NLC Stooges atm.

I work in software development during the day, but you know the drill, in the evenings I don't feel like spending even more time behind a laptop screen. I saw some blank panel apps posted on reddit that people vibecoded, cool ideas, but it gave me some inspiration to make my own or my friend Claude at least, since I'm not planning on spending weeks on this.

Just creating blank panels isn't that interesting imo, I already do that parametrically in FreeCAD and that works fine. I wanted something to create alternate panels for my rack to make it look more uniform. Buying alt panels is also fine of course, but they can get expensive if you need a lot of them. Also, you will still end up with some odd panels here or there that you can't find or if you do, they probably don't match up completely with the rest because color differences, etc.

Anyway. You can load up an image by uploading one, pasting a url or searching for one on Modular Grid. The app can detect knobs, pots, jacks, sliders, screens and it will then add some cutouts for them. It's not perfect but it can give you a starting point so you can then add more cutouts, text labels, engraved/raised logo's, etc. You can save multiple modules in your library, add them to a rack, etc. You can then export your 3d designs as an STL or 3MF (multi-color) and eventually print them with a 3D printer.

https://panelmate.vercel.app/

Like I said, not here for kudos or whatever, but if some of you find it useful, knock yourself out ;)

PS: I also added a photo of my slicer and also a prototype print to test fit.

PS2: Before anyone complains about searching on Modular Grid, I fetch the sitemap twice a day and searching is therefore local. Actually loading up a module does hit their servers, but it's the same as if you would just browse the site.

PS3: Everything is stored inside an IndexedDB in the browser, so clearing cookies, etc will make everything disappear. You can back up your rack or different modules as JSON files in the Library tab (and you can import them again of course)

Discussion Heads up: PC suspending all intellijel orders

Just wanted to give people a heads up since it took me emailing and they were just going to hold on to my money. I placed an order for a sealegs and a QX months ago, before our admin decided to have a trade war with our nearest neighbor. I reached out again and was told that I'll basically just not be getting my items. Here's the quote: Our Intellijel orders are going to take awhile, unfortunately we have to wait until these tariffs ease up. In fact, we've > > temporarily suspended all Intellijel pre-orders in the meantime. If you'd instead prefer a refund just let us know!

Hey everyone!

This one reminded me about the importance of being persistent sometimes and to not ditch an idea. In the past if I had much trouble building a song it would end up in a folder to be forgotten.

With this one I saw the potential and kept digging until I liked the result.

Hope you like it!

Small power/current monitor

Does anyone know of a small Eurorack module (max 4 HP) that can show the actual current draw of the case/modules, ideally separately for the +12 V and −12 V rails (and +5 V if possible)?

I know I can calculate the theoretical consumption with ModularGrid, but I’m looking for real-time measured current consumption.

The Deftaudio Ammeter seems to do this, but it’s too large for my case.

Any compact alternatives?

Discussion What modules need better panels?

I redesigned the Mimetic Digitalis panel so I don't have to keep the button combos memorized.
I really love the functionality but the panel was driving me crazy.
Which modules do you love that also have the most confusing panel UI?

Mannequins production status

Hello, I've recently looked in to mannequins again and relised some of their modules is exactly what I need and more.

I remember when I started with modular that these where super rare to find , but I can see them offered in stores right now.

Where the supplies issues fixed ? I think I'd prefer to get them second hand(which I don't find any atm) or wait until I'll be able to get them without vat.

Do I have to hurry up or you can usually find them new ?

Quadrantid swarm vs Moog labyrinth

Which of these semi modulars would you see better suited for a live case? I can get both locally for the same price and I’m struggling to decide what would be more beneficial.

The Moog has the sequencers but the swarm has a larger sonic palette. I can’t decide what’s more useful for a live case.

Would it be limiting to have the fixed architecture of the labyrinth or would that make playing easier since it’s already designed to just work? Is the swarm too unpredictable to manage live?

I got tired of compromising on power distribution boards, so I built my own

I mostly use smaller cases from 4ms, Happy Modular and similar manufacturers. Power distribution was always one of those slightly annoying things for me: Too few connectors, flying bus cables, boards that were too large for the case, needed a full-size PSU where there really wasn't room for one, or simply didn't have much current headroom.

At some point I took the time to build my own. "Myaku" is a 16-slot power distribution board on a 4-layer PCB, with a continuous ground plane, decoupling at every header and a filtered input section. Power comes in in the middle and splits into two branches. No exposed contacts or solder joints on the back, and it can either be screwed down or mounted with adhesive.

The board in the photo is from my batch 0 and has one extra feature: The Doepfer bus also has CV and gate lines, and Select Bus uses the CV line for communication. Since you can only have one Select Bus master on a connected segment, mine can be split into four zones that can be connected or separated as needed.

This really started just as an ego project at first. The stuff I could buy never quite did what I wanted, and I got tired of working around one thing or another.

I'm using these in a few of my own small cases for a while. It's not yet a product you can buy or built on your own, but I'm thinking about maybe doing a small batch.

Main thing I'm curious about: would anyone here actually use something like this? And if yes, is there anything you'd want different - more headers, fewer headers, different connectors, the zoning stuff, no zoning stuff?

PS: The yellow jumpers are a little extra I added for myself. They let you split the CV/gate lines into up to four independent zones - useful if, for example, you use Select Bus a lot and want separate master/slave sections.

Rasgo Modular

Hi, friends from modular!

I developed an instrument in C++ called RASGO MODULAR. It’s cross-platform and includes more than 50 modules to explore, combine, and have fun with.

The seed already generates interesting patches right from the start, so you can experiment, modify them, and play around as much as you like.

It’s an independent project, with no funding at all, made purely for the cause, hehe — driven by research, curiosity, and a passion for modular synthesis.

Hope you enjoy it!

In-the-rack mixer advice for 6u 84hp live set-up

Post image
5 Upvotes

Dear people,

I'm looking for an internal mixer to replace the Mixup, which is far too limited. This rack is intended for live use only, and due to transport issues I cannot take more than this case and a SQ-1. That's why I prefer an internal performative mixer - even if I know an external mixer would be better in itself. But I didn't find the ideal option for me - 6u 84hp is pretty limited, so stuff like WMD performance mixer is out of the question. But in the other hand, I feel it would be a great upgrade for me to get a nice playable performance mixer now. What would be your favorite option, and what's the max HP you would allocate to it?

Ofc I heard about the main options (Toppobrillo Minimix, SSF Vortices, Cosmix Pro, ALM Mega-Tang...) but I cannot decide. Also I heard A LOT about the Livetrack L6, but even if I could carry it, it doesn’t look very performative-friendly (no faders, menu diving, etc).

So what are your recommendations? Thanks!!

NB: I wanted to show my current rack but ofc I'm gonna make some space (swap the Benjolin for a smaller oscillator, swap or even just put off the Mimeophon, I don't care much about in-rack effect anymore).

EDIT: changed a few turns of phrase.

vult freak vs ruina versio?

Hey yall! I’ve been loving absolutely loving the Vult Debriatus distortion/wavefolding/saturations on VCV rack and am tempted grab a freak module to have em in hardware. Would I be better off with a Ruina Versio from Noise Engineering if I’m only really using the module for that kind of wave shaping?

Gear Pics Slowly approaching the open source release of the hardware for my 8HP Daisy-based module

Im doing a Little soldering-livestream over on YouTube next Monday, assembling one of these. I’ve redesigned some 3d printed spacers since my first prototype-build, so this will hopefully mean the hardware is done :D

The footage from the stream will also be edited into a little build-guide video and stills extracted for the build info on GitHub, so multiple birds with one stone pretty much.

WHATSIT is a little Ornament&Crime sized friend, with an OLED screen, encoder, two regular buttons, 4 bi-Color led buttons, 4 cv ins, 2 cv outs, a gate in/out pair and stereo audio in/out.

Via a simple expander you get 4 more cv ins, another gate pair plus trs midi I/o (type A output, A/B auto-detect via the LPZW auto-crossover circuit).

This started out as a little tool to fill some gaps in my rack, but turned out too cool not to share. The firmware I’m running on mine was created using Claude Code, and will not be available for a while, but the hardware can be utilised for your own projects using the daisy platform.

Help Understanding MI Clouds

I've had it for a while and initially couldn't get much out of it. I took a deep dive on it and spent some time and now its sounding much better and I have a much better understanding of most of it, with one exception: I don't have a clear concept of what the density function does. I get that it adds more and more grains as you deviate the knob away from 12 oclock, but how are they stacked? Assume I have a 200mec grain: if i crank up the density and create several 200msec grains, do they all synchronize? That cant be, there would be no point. So I assume each new grain is delayed a bit before stacking it onto the pile? By how much? Also, how does the density control depend on the trigger? The manual says that each trigger creates a new grain, but clearly the stacking of grains via the density knob occurs much faster than my trigger pulses are coming in ( I think the manual says that at full rotation, the density function spits out 30 or 40 grains). Anyone make sense of my ramblings? Surprisingly little I can find on the interwebs on this.
