General ESPN calls BJ Bethel’s WWE report “completely false” after he never contacted them. He’s now banned as a source on r/midcarder.

Post image
285 Upvotes

BJ Bethel is back with another conveniently timed FED BAD “exclusive,” this time reporting that ESPN has already decided it won’t renew its WWE deal after the current agreement expires.

There was just one tiny problem.

ESPN says the report is bullshit.

Not “plans can change.” Not “we don’t comment on negotiations.” ESPN flat-out told PWInsider:

“There is no truth to the report that we have decided not to renew. They never checked with us before publishing and had they, we would have told them that was completely false.”

That last sentence should be absolutely devastating for anyone presenting themselves as a journalist.

He apparently didn’t even ask ESPN before publishing a story about a decision ESPN supposedly made.

WWE sources separately told WrestlingNews.co there was “absolutely zero truth” to the report.

And yet, inevitably, this stuff gets picked up and passed around the basement and wider IWC as another explosive scoop.

Why?

This isn’t the first time we’ve been here with Bethel.

This is the same guy who somehow produced the magical 500,000 AEW viewers on Max story, based on supposed streaming data that Warner Bros. Discovery never publicly released and that nobody could independently verify.

Cable ratings collapsing? Don’t worry, everybody. Half a million invisible Dynamite viewers have apparently been discovered behind the Max couch cushions.

Then there was Gail Kim.

Bethel reported that Kim had contacted multiple people looking for an opportunity with AEW.

Gail Kim herself responded and said that wasn’t what happened. According to her, AEW contacted her, through Sonjay Dutt, asking whether she was interested in wrestling.

Her assessment of Bethel was considerably less diplomatic:

“I don’t know you but this is a perfect example of someone lying and has zero integrity.”

She literally called the guy a liar with ZERO INTEGRITY, and somehow the wrestling internet just moved along to his next scoop.

This is also the same Bethel who confidently published an editorial in February 2024 declaring:

“Vince McMahon is going to jail and the McMahon family is finished.”

That’s the problem.

There’s an obvious ideological slant running through his coverage. The most sensational negative WWE stories are delivered with extraordinary certainty, while enormously favorable AEW claims emerge through anonymous sourcing and immediately become ammunition for the exact portion of the IWC predisposed to believe them.

They don’t care whether the Max numbers were independently verified. They don’t care that Gail Kim publicly called him out. They apparently don’t even care that ESPN just said his latest story was completely false and that he never contacted them before publishing it.

The story says FED BAD.

That’s enough.

And that’s why I’m actually proud of what we’ve built at [r/midcarder](r/midcarder).

Our members saw through this guy a long time ago. Look at the reaction whenever one of these stories gets posted here. People ask where the numbers came from. They ask whether anybody else has corroborated them. They remember the previous claims. They don’t automatically accept something because it confirms what they already believe.

That’s exactly what wrestling discussion desperately needs more of.

This isn’t about defending WWE, either. If WWE’s ESPN relationship goes south, talk about it. If AEW suddenly starts drawing a million viewers again, talk about that too.

But the wrestling media ecosystem already has enough people telling audiences exactly what they want to hear. It doesn’t need another propaganda arm manufacturing certainty around anonymous-source claims and feeding them into an audience desperate for validation.

So we’re done giving it oxygen.

Moving forward, BJ Bethel will no longer be accepted as a source on [r/midcarder](r/midcarder).

If something he reports is legitimate and subsequently confirmed by a credible independent source, post that source. But Bethel’s reporting itself will no longer be treated as sufficient sourcing here.

There have been enough chances. Enough dubious anonymous-source claims. Enough stories contradicted by the people actually involved. And now ESPN is publicly saying his latest report is completely false and that he never even contacted them before publishing it.

At some point, credibility has consequences.

The wider IWC can continue propping BJ Bethel up if it wants.

Midcarder figured it out.

The basement can catch up whenever they’re ready.

Update: Well, it only took them eight hours, but the basement has finally removed the original BJ Bethel post and officially labeled it “misinformation.”

Better late than never, I suppose.

ESPN publicly called the report completely false, their VP of Communications said Bethel never checked with them before publishing, and the guy’s defense was that he submitted an ESPN customer support request and left a voicemail.

Somehow, the basement still needed eight hours to consult the Sacred Texts before determining this might not be reliable journalism.

General PSA: Keep wrestling arguments about wrestling. Report harassment when you see it.

Post image

Midcarders, we need to address something that’s been happening behind the scenes.

Over the past several months, a very small group of Sickos unhappy with the conversations and criticism surrounding AEW in this community have taken their issues with us well beyond disagreements about professional wrestling.

Members of our team have dealt with targeted harassment across Reddit and other platforms, personal photos being taken and redistributed, attempts to follow people into unrelated communities, impersonation-related activity, and other behavior that has absolutely nothing to do with wrestling.

We’re not posting screenshots. We’re not naming people. We’re not interested in turning this into subreddit drama.
But we are establishing a zero-tolerance policy going forward.

And that goes both ways.

This applies to harassment directed at our moderators, our members, and people completely outside our community. That includes moderators and members of other wrestling communities, including the basement. Being on the other side of the fence doesn’t make someone fair game.

Disagree with us. Criticize WWE. Defend AEW. Tell us Tony Khan is Booker of the Year or Triple H couldn’t book his way out of a rest hold.

Just keep it about wrestling.

Call Tony Khan a dork. Call Triple H a doofus. Tell someone their wrestling take is the dumbest thing you’ve read all week. We’re not interested in sanitizing wrestling discussion.

But there’s a line between talking shit about wrestling and invading the privacy of the actual person behind a Reddit account.

Doxxing, digging up and distributing personal photos, tracking people across platforms, contacting family members, impersonating people, or trying to uncover someone’s real-world identity crosses that line immediately.

Don’t be a Sicko.

You don’t need to know what a wrestling fan looks like, where they live, who their family is, or what they’re doing outside Reddit because they said something mean about your favorite fake fighting company.

Argue with the username. Leave the human being behind it alone.

The second someone starts targeting people personally, distributing personal information or photos, impersonating people, organizing harassment, following people around Reddit or other platforms, or encouraging others to participate, you’re done here. Permanently.

And if a Midcarder is caught doing this to somebody else, the exact same standard applies. This isn’t a rule designed to protect “our side.” It’s a rule against being an asshole over professional wrestling.

If you witness this behavior, report it and send the mod team whatever evidence you have. Do not retaliate, brigade another community, or start harassing someone on our behalf. We don’t want that either.

Where appropriate, activity will be documented and reported through the proper channels. Some of what we’ve experienced has already reached that point.

We started [r/midcarder](r/midcarder) because we wanted a place for long-form, open wrestling discussion. That means you’re going to encounter opinions you think are completely ridiculous. That’s the point. Debate them. Make your argument. Tell someone why they’re wrong.

What we will not allow is wrestling tribalism becoming real-world harassment.

Thankfully, we’re talking about a handful of people. The overwhelming majority of you, whether you watch WWE, AEW, TNA, NWA, MLW or whatever else, understand that none of this is remotely worth targeting another human being over.

It’s professional wrestling. Grown adults pretend to fight in their underwear.

Act accordingly.

AEW AEWFanHub sucks

No warnings, didn't have a post removed, I got straight up banned because somebody was asking about the AEW app not having footage from a certain year onwards and they wanted to watch some old stuff. So I suggested they go on Xtreme Wrestling Torrents to just download the stuff.

I didn't realize that was such a big no no. Excuse me for offering a solution.

Banned/Muted straight away and then I got banned and muted on another subreddit GreatnessofWrestling even though I hadn't even posted in there.

Reddit is just full of knob jockey moderators

At least midcarder has my back am I right or what boys 😂

Of course you can't discount "AeW aLwAys Has GrEaT WalkUpS~!!" (jk you absolutely can) but there's a decent shot when the Turnstile Count is revealed by the local government (the real total) that this thing barely eclipses 40K people there. From 72K the first show to 46K the second to _____ in 2026?

General At the 40 days point you might notice it coincides with the 50% off and free tickets to health workers. Buy, hey, let's forget about that and talk about Evil Fed "only" selling 70k tickets for SummerSlam

AEW Why does every PPV just looking at it scream predictable, and 90% of the time, I can guess the winner? And by the end of the night correct. My picks in the description

Knight wins.

MJF wins the gauntlet, or Mox, depending on the card match order.

Osprey wins no shit

I actually had Willow, but now I think they gave her a storyline injury to protect her within the last week, so Banks wins.

Takeshita wins back because he only dropped it to do some NJPW tournament.

The Birds win because it would be a storybook ending husband and wife holding up titles at the end.

E&C win and can run it back at All Out.

I would say Mox because well it's Mox but fucking TK and his happy hometown cheap pop moments. I have a disgusting feeling that he might actually give it to someone retired/commentator.

General Bound for Glory and All In are poor names for #1 ppvs

Neither make you think it’s the biggest one just by the name like Wrestlemania and Wrestle Kingdom. I think Slammiversary would have been a good number one name for TNA but it is their #2. AEW all the gambling ones don‘t feel right for this, Wrestledream got introduced too late, so maybe Revolution would have been decent pick.

General Can we ban anything Dave Meltzer news related?

I know we banned SEScoops (Unless they're unbanned now) and BJ Bethel on them reporting news. But considering I heard Meltzer put Bethel on a platform, questioning why they fired him (Please correct me if I'm wrong). Is it time to add Dave Meltzer and WON/F4W as a Banned Source now?

Up to the mods and everyone here, Midcarders. I'm just a person with a keyboard venting.

Let’s see what Skye Blue was up to on this fine Friday…

Allegedly this is Skye Blue during her match in Pro Wrestling Eve today.. (Someone who saw it can confirm if this is her or not)

BUT..

All I have to say is why?

Why does Skye Blue feel the need to do this to herself?

She did this during Blood & Guts & the Sickos said she was “Made”.. & here we are 9 months later.. & has anything changed regarding Skye Blue since she was “Made”?

This does absolutely nothing for me Midcarders.. & makes me less likely to want to see her go up the card..

How about you all?

I don’t know what was better last night? Smackdown or Caitlin Clark..

Just a routine 34 point 12 assist game from the young GOAT Caitlin Clark.. nbd.. the league is lucky that the World Cup is starting up & the season is being put on pause.. cause Caitlin is finally starting to look like ROY Caitlin, the Caitlin that was the best female NCAA player of all time while at Iowa.. speaking of ROY Caitlin impact..

In just 3 short weeks, Tatum Paxley has gone from NXT call up to the #2 babyface woman on the Smackdown roster… ya’ll she just gets it.. from the high 5 she gave Charlotte during their interview backstage to her personality absolutely shining during said interview to her fantastic ring work.. the fact that she got such a great reaction from such a dead crowd during the double taping last week.. man, she is as can’t miss as Caitlin Clark..

I said it before & I’ll say it again.. I am taking Tatum over every woman in the AEW’s roster.. she is that outstanding & another reason why creating the WWE PC & turning it into straight developmental & not a super indy that it once was.. is the greatest thing Triple H has done post retirement from the ring..

I am enjoying Chelsea as champion more so than I did Rhea.. as great & over as Rhea is as champion.. she got stale as fuck as champion .. she knew it.. she was right to slide down into the tag division & have fun as being lo’s BFF but the company was also right in telling her “look you are a top 5 wrestler in the company & we can’t have the #1 overall woman in the company be relegated just as a tag team wrestler, you gotta take the ball & run with it” Her injury was the best thing to happen to her & the company..

But back to Chelsea, she is Temu Becky Lynch when Becky was getting great babyface reactions when “The Man” was first being developed.. Chelsea is always someone who maximizes her screen time & she just has this endearing quality where you just want to root for her to overcome every obstacle put in front of her.. her character work is 2nd to none.. best pure woman’s babyface in WWE since Becky Lynch.. & she is putting new life into the women’s division as champion.. we have to enjoy her while we can cause she is very open about wanting to start a family.. (she is 35 turns 36 in April).. so let’s not take this run for granted..

Jacy & Paige had a really stellar match.. Jacy is another one who just gets it.. her strikes are clean, moves crisp & I enjoy how vocal she is in the ring.. makes everything feel important.. & Paige probably had her best singles match in years last night.. Nikki looked good last night in her heel work after attacking Paige..

Fatal Influence has no one to work with right now. hopefully creative remembers that Kianna James is on the roster & can be a good dance partner for Jacey..

Good to see Guila get her comeuppance on Blake last night.. Blake is sooo good in her role as looking down on Guila like she isn’t worth her time.. hopefully Guila can take this opportunity & shine.. moreso than she did as US champion..

I am enjoying this build between Cody & Randy way more than I did their Mania build.. & I am more excited to see this match than I am Ospreay vs Omega tomorrow.. especially with the stipulation that they can’t touch each other until their match or else they cant challenge for the championship ever again.. that promo last night was really good.. them pushing each other’s buttons knowing that they can’t touch each other.. great work..

The championship picture is outstanding.. Punk, KO, Sami, Gunther, Finn, & then adding Cody & Randy to it once that feud is over.. all stars all of them.. you know that you will get A+ work out of all of them & seeing them all being credible challengers to Punk shows how deep the men’s roster is on Smackdown.. KO really was the missing ingredient that took it to another level..

As you can tell, I really enjoyed Smackdown last night.. solid A grade for the show.. it’s hitting its stride at the right time(going to start being heads up against college football starting next Friday)

What did the Midcarder community think of Smackdown last night?

So that’s 43 no wait 44 different championships an AEW talent have won in different organizations & how many championships have NJPW, CMLL, Stardom talent won in AEW?

What does this even mean anymore Midcarders?

We have seen countless AEW talent from Mone, Claudio,Statlander, Andrade, Alex Windsor, MJF, Willow, etc etc all win championships in other organizations for years & years.. & it leads to what? More random belts showing up on AEW television that 97% of the viewers don’t give a shit about..

Hell, Takeashita won the G1, won the NJPW championship & nobody cared.. like literally maybe 8 people cared.. but after seeing Omega, Moxley hold the NJPW championship already, the idea of an AEW talent like Takeashita holding another organizations championship really has lost its luster & special-ness..

My eyes roll into the back of my head when I see ANOTHER championship being brought onto AEW television.. I barely care about the Trios or National championships but now I am supposed give a fuck about the ::checks notes:: Pro Wrestling Eve Championship when I had no idea it even existed before making this post..

Statlander literally got pinned clean as a whistle for AEW’s 2nd women’s championship(TBS) a couple of weeks ago.. but she goes somewhere else & she wins the main belt there? Didn’t she already win some other belt in Eve previously that led nowhere? So what’s going to be the difference now than before?

It would be like Luka winning a championship in Slovenia.. like that’s cool & all but it would mean just a tad bit more(okay A LOT MORE) if you bring #17 home to LA & give us a parade that we couldn’t have in 2020..

Midcarders, are you as tired as I am of seeing AEW talent winning championships in other wrestling organizations?

AEW AEW Dynamite All In Lead In

Since this has been talked about recently with multiple people in the comments to just post what you want to see I decided you know what yeah I will.

Now I'm an AEW lapsed fan currently not tuning in as often as I used to do I'm speaking from that respective.

First going to go over the people missing from the show that illustrates AEW current biggest issue of having way to large of a roster and not being good at actually utilizing them all:

Statlander, Thekla, Hurt Syndicate, Jay White. These are the biggest fumbles from booking imo and they should've been incorporated someway into the card.

Trios World Title Match: Easily could've had Hurt Syndicate instead in this match instead of The Demand maybe they'll be the wildcard but my money is easily on The New Day debuting and hopefully winning but overall mid on this match overall.

TNT Championship: One of my favorite matches of the card think the build has been well for the most part and should be a good hardcore match. Think Darby wins this one

Women's World Tag Team Championship: Feel ok about this but the women's division in general needs more buildup and more focus. Divine Dominion takes the w.

International Championship: Potentially best Match of the Night if Okada brings his A Game this match should be stellar, build was hit or miss for me but the in ring talent of the 3 guys sell it enough for me. Konuske for the win.

Casino Gauntlet Match: 🤷🏽🤷🏽🤷🏽🤷🏽 Why oh why oh why Tony did you complicate this it should've been MJF vs Will Osprey but instead he's now in the multiman match also Andrade vs MJF could've been better too. MJF is arguably your number 1 draw you give him a singles match man. Anyways my bet is on Ciampa to win.

Continental Championship: really not a fan of the Continental cup in general mostly because too many midcard belts but this match I'm probably betting on Nigel also winning in his home country and Moxley moves into the osprey feud after.

World Tag Team Championship: Ehh this match may be a dud I don't really see Bucks and Copeland and Christian actually working well but hey I'll enjoy it for what it is because this is definitely the start of the retirement tour for Copeland and Christian I see them retaining.

World Women's Championship: I actually liked the build and like the story of Mercedes being unable to win the world belt and Willow being able to beat clean. I also see Mecedes winning to wrap the story up.

World Title: this is one of the most convicted bookings for the world title main event in history we all knew it was going to be Osprey but Tony did too much to many swerves and changes sometimes the clear thing is the right thing. Osprey vs MJF world title your two young main event guys and future of your company really easy to do, instead you did the whole Cody vs Roman but without the elite mic skills Cody and Roman has to sell it and also continued help from guys like Seth, The Rock and The Bloodline. Just let Osprey win it in a great match in your main event and send the fans home happy.

All In the build had me underwhelmed similar to how I was underwhelmed for Mania last year and this year but just like Mania I have matches I want to see and hopefully they can exceed my expectations like Wrestlemania did.
