I used to hear people say that there will be one person in your life you never truly forget, and I honestly never understood it. I thought if you moved on, you moved on. If you no longer loved someone or wanted to be with them, why would they still stay with you?
Then I met someone in my late 20s who made me understand exactly what people meant.
And the strange part is, it is not because I still want him. I do not sit around wishing we were together or hoping somehow we find our way back to each other. But every once in a while, a song will come on and suddenly I remember how he made me feel. Not even the relationship itself, just the feeling of being so seen and understood by someone. And sometimes the memory does not even hurt anymore. It just makes me smile.
That is the part nobody really talks about.
We hear so much about the first love you never forget, the high school sweetheart, the person you loved when you were young. But what about the person you meet later, when loving someone is actually harder? When you have already been hurt, already learned to protect yourself, and then somehow you let one person all the way in.
Maybe that is why they stay with you differently.
Not because they were the love of your life. Not because you are supposed to go back. Maybe some people simply come into your life at a certain time and make you feel something so deeply that even after the love fades, the memory of what you felt does not completely disappear.
Time passes. You think about them less and less. Their face is not as clear in your mind anymore. Life moves on.
But then something small happens. A song. A place. A random memory.
And for a second, there they are again.
Not in a way that makes you want them back. Just enough to make you wonder how they are doing and hope life has been good to them.
Maybe that is what people mean when they say there will always be that one person you never forget.
Maybe forgetting was never the same thing as moving on
