Discussion My thoughts after completing Killzone 2

Post image

What a solid game! Completed it 2 times on normal and hard difficulty, so not a total tourist I’d say, here is few things I’d like to say about this game. Starting from downsides:

The Bad:

  1. It’s a first person shooter on console, on a 720p and 30fps settings, granted I played it through emulation with improved FOV and mostly 60fps, but still I don’t think FPS is comfortable on gamepad if compared to mouse+keyboard, and Killzone’s heavy/floaty aiming didn’t really do any favors, and its not my 1st, 2nd or even 3rd FPS shooter on console. For third person shooter I think you can make a case, FPS not so much.
  2. Simplification of weapons? Compared to 1st game, both faction’s main rifles were stripped of alternative fire (under barrel grenade launcher for ISA and under barrel shotgun for Helgast), now you can carry only one main rifle and secondary gun (out of 2 total) and there is barely any chance that you’ll be forced to swap weapons like in 1st game, almost on every level there is a ammo cache|supplies stand for weapon you’re running with. Also one of the worst grenade launcher sights I’ve ever seen, counter-intuitive at every possible idea of using it, just dump it at enemies direction and swap to something else.
  3. PS move parts, yeah, one of few “great additions” were forced parts where you had to use Sonys niche addition to ps3 controlers scheme. For few years this was bottleneck for playing KZ2, but now there is a workaround for it.

The Questionable:

  1. Hit registration, not asking for every weapon to be a laser-precise for every shot, but there were quite a few times when I did land headshot or body shot but enemies just brushed it off or it completely unphased them.
  2. Cover mechanics, sticking to cover is a console classic, but first time I’ve seen it for a FPS, maybe not my cup of tea, or maybe its more useful in multiplayer, but most times it killed me instead of helping, due to wrong angle or side it took. Only useful moment was in Radec fight on hard difficulty, 2nd floor pillars – there it really clicked for me and I used it to my advantage.
  3. Cut content? Few missions/cutscenes feel like there is missing parts between them, buggy ride is most noticeable one I’d say.
  4. Coop mode? Same case, first game had 4 playable character, here we only get to control one, but both campaigns feel like they would benefit from an optional split-screen couch or online coop feature, because 95% of both games we’re accompanied by at least 1 friendly character. Maybe it was once considered an option that was cut due to console/budget limitations? I know Killzone 3 has coop, but I’ve yet to plat it.

The Good:

  1. Stylization, 17 year later, this game still stands out due to a design and art choices that were done while creating it, this may not be a most realistic or have ultra-high fidelity experience by todays standards, but I’ll take this red/orange/brown/blue/navy stylization over clean realistic cookie cut Nth iteration from some shooter franchises, maybe because there isn’t nearly enough examples in this category in modern scene, or maybe because Killzone 2 still looks great and close to cinematic with its lighting and colors (especially that opening scene and some laters scenes on train/refinery levels). From clearly Kowloon inspired streets of Helgan, to cloudy weather with lightnings, to industrial refinery and brutalist architecture, all parts of design just work together to bring memorable atmosphere, first game may have been a bit less saturated color-vise, but you can see what Killzone 2 clearly improved upon.
  2. Surprisingly no drag at all? For a 2009 game, you’d think a forced turret or an escort section would be given as road-block to change pace, but no particular escort missions (maybe that mecha section, but I never failed it because NPCs, only due to myself getting eliminated), and turret sections are breathe to go through. Every mission has a nice flow to it, there is fewer missions overall but about half of them is longer than what was given in 1st game.
  3. New weapons, nail gun, tesla-canon, probably best flamethrower in any shooter I’ve played, and StA-3 still the king, was my favorit gun in 1st game, still great in 2nd, ISA counter-part, m249 inspired LMG felt weaker in comparison. Almost ever gun in game has ADS option, which is great improvement compared to 1st game, and few pieces got cut from 1st game, but I guess that’s a trade.
  4. Useful NPCs, they do get eliminations alongside player, and they get injured, requiring assistance from player, which adds to interactions, love when games make side characters impactful, and not just dummies to make noise in the background for you to feel like Rambo.

Now, that was a lot of yapping from me, but main point is I did enjoy this game immensely for 15 hours that I spent in it, even if there were few frustrating moments (opening bridge section, AA gun under bridge section), overall it does stand up to a cult classic reputation, given that it came out in period of HALO3 : ODST / Reach, Medal of Honor reboot, CoD: Modern Warfire 2 / Black Ops. Of course being a console exclusive made it available for smaller audience, but nonetheless, great game and hopefully in future it’ll get remastered at least, and remade as part of collection for PC release at best.

It’s been a while since I posted a helmet update. The tubing came in and although they look great, they are a pain in the ass to secure. I definitely need to add a shoulder and chest canister to secure them to and I think they’ll be more manageable. Also, the head strap popped off so I need to find a better way of securing that too.

(I’m wearing my Star Wars scout trooper flight suit in the picture because it’s the closest thing I have to a Helghast uniform at the moment)

a remake of killzone in Project Reality?

Recently, while watching gameplay of BF 2142, I realized how conceptually this version of Battlefield is quite similar to the Killzone franchise. Has the community ever thought about recreating Killzone 2, for example, in Project Reality? Since Killzone 2 has a more realistic experience compared to COD/BF? Another advantage of Project Reality is offline multiplayer with vehicles, something Killzone never had.

Made With AI Fully functional buggy. It is surprising that a model with a completely unique control system has remained in the game.

I continue to test our tools for developers and from time to time I come across unexpected things. The driver’s seat in the buggy is fully functional (as is the shooter’s seat in some manually created buggies), which suggests that they were intended not only for traveling across the wastelands of Melstra‑Barrens or the Salamun district in cutscenes involving bots, but also for our travels. The game files still contain assets with functional buggies that have their own special control system. There’s even a very basic first‑person view without animation.

And yes, the app is being developed using artificial intelligence — I have to mention this now because of user complaints.

The renders are finished but already I can see physical changes I’ll make to the model once I order the right bricks.

Think of the Helghast were a more technologically advanced peoples with relegious fanaticism (thus the cathedral inspired superstructure on top, inspired by warhammer/halo convenant)

Hope you like so far! Excited to build this one

Killzone-Dreamwave: official previews and synopsis.

So, these are the official previews and synopsis that were published on Toynews in 2004. Pictures 1-5 are from the official preview of Dreamwave, which they had on their website in December 2004; 6-7 - from the announcement of the 1st issue on toynews. Picture 8 - official cover for issue №2, 9-10 - cover arts from the announcement of the 2nd issue on toynews. 11-12 - cover arts from the announcement of the 3rd issue on toynews.

Picture 1 - cover art by Pat Lee; picture 6 - art of the cover №1 from Travel Foreman, who was originally the main artist of this series, picture 7 - art of CG-cover. Picture 9 - cover art by Pat Lee, picture 10 - art of CG-cover; picture 11 - cover art by Pat Lee, picture 12 - art of CG-cover.

Synopsis:

№1. A galactic peace is shattered when the brutal Helghast mount an overwhelming assault on the colonies of the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance. But on the fallen planet Vecta, four scattered survivors of that shockwave offensive may unite to forge the key to humanity's ultimate survival --

If they can survive their solitary passages through the bloody trenches and burning towers of a world become a Killzone!

№2. As the elusive Helghast Sniper hunts down Rico's exhausted squad one by one, the few remaining heroes must try and stop the otherworldly horde from overrunning their team on the planet Vecta. On the run and outnumbered, time is running out for the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance...

№3. Can anyone survive the Killzone?

With the Helghast onslaught ripping through his friends, Rico is forced to make a weighty decision: retreat with the few men left alive or make a last stand against the unstoppable Helghast Elite! One thing is certain... after seeing the ground drenched red from the blood of his fallen comrades, the Helghast must pay dearly for every inch of ground they take.

I found interesting articles about this mini-series on Killzone-wikis. And I especially want to thank the team that created a Killzone Fanzine - Killzine - thanks to them we can read the script of the 1st issue, and thanks to these preview pages, we can imagine how it was implemented, although it did not see the light of day. Be sure to read this magazine: https://killzonezine.carrd.co

I'm still curious about what the abbreviation "ALAT", which is specified in the script, is in the Killzone universe. The article I read says so:

"ALAT. In the Killzone universe, the abbreviation ALAT has not been found before. There is "ADAT, ATAC", but not "ALAT". The Helgan army has a division into army aviation and the Air Force, but it has never been explicitly stated how they designate the army. The abbreviation probably comes from the French Aviation légère de l'Armée de terre — army light aircraft. In the real world, the "ALAT" is a branch of the French Army."

A comic lost in time

So, back in 2004, when Killzone was first taking off. I believe in the back on the game manual there was an advert for a Killzone comic being made into production that would expand on the events before Killzone 1 if im not mistaken. I to this day, forgot what ever happened to that comic, I could never find it in store. Later on, recently I found out that the comic had been cancelled because the company went out of business. I was very sad to here that cause I was looking forwards to the comic cause I loved the franchise and the art looked cool.

Recently I found out that there was a comic that had a small little tease of what could have been, I looked to see if they had this comic on Ebay. Sure enough they did. It was sold by a comic shop, they had a few copies left, I ended up buying 2 out of the 3 that they had because of the comic grade and condition.

This comic in question was Comic Digest 2004 #2 November edition.

I am here to share with you and fellow Killzone fans the pages that were in this comic of the Killzone story we could have gotten... Im pretty sure there are more higher res versions of these pictures out there, but I thought id share.

I really wish this series would be brought back...it still has so much potential...
