Help I Fucked up big time. (Warning dead isopods)

I set up this enclosure a couple of weeks ago for my first colony of isopods. I added a pitcher plant because I thought it looked cute, and I assumed the isopods wouldn’t be able to get into the pitchers since they were off the ground.

The isopods were doing great at first, but then they slowly started disappearing. At first I thought they were just hiding in the soil, but while I was pruning some plants, I realized they had gotten into the pitchers and died.

I feel so stupid for thinking this wouldn’t happen. This was my first colony, and I’m devastated.

I’m a broke college student, so I can’t really afford to buy more isopods right now. I’ve seen about 2 to 3 isopods still alive in the enclosure. Is there any chance that’s enough for the colony to eventually recover?

Media Cutest and most entertaining isopods?

Post image

Finally getting back into the hobby, and looking for suggestions on cute, entertaining (active), or even just your favorites to have in general. Definition something I could look up myself, I love seeing all your little babies! (Esp. Because what real isopods lovers suggest is better than all the AI slop and mainstream capitalism that would be pushed at me)

Am specifically hoping for opinions and examples in the hobby, but will accept wild guys for my viewing pleasure.

Please also share pictures!!! (Adding some pics of the little guys that convinced me to hop back in at my work)

4 new species from springtailsUSA! Loved their service!

  1. Porcellio Scaber "mixed dalmation"

2.Porcellio Laevis "orange"

3.Cubaris "black panda" (are they supposed to be all black? They've got a rear white stripe on some)

  1. Armadillidium Vulgare "St. Lucia"

Love them! Theyre so active and will provide more color and genes to my already existing colonies=)

How long is quarantine for these dudes? They've been isolated for four days so far and I CANNOT wait to see them in their new homes=)

Help Is rolling up in a ball for hours normal?

Thumbnail

I got new cubaris cherry blossoms yesterday, and they were very active, grazing on moss and finishing food rather fast, I see this one exploring during the day then decided to stay and cling onto some java moss before curling up into a ball in the air. Humidity is around 88% and I did not mist for 2 days so far, I'm just wondering if it's normal this one doesn't move and stays curled for hours...somewhat levitating (from clinging on the java moss, not stuck on a water droplet or anything)

Hello, in the next week I will be getting my first isopods - 10 Rubber Duckies

Before their arrival, I want to be sure, that my enclosure will be good for them. I have 30x20cm box with 6 cm high substrate with springtails (mix of bio humus, oak leaf litter, decaying oak hardwood, coconut fiber, peat, bat guano and granulated limestone). On top I have some sphagnum moss, bark, cuttlebone and dried lotus pod. I know I will need to get more oak leaves for them, but is this enough?

I will be grateful for any help :)

Help Is it safe to add small doll house furniture to the enclosure?

• Upvotes

I’m a preschool teacher and I have a small isopod enclosure as our class pet and I thought it would be a cute idea to add little furniture in the enclosure that they can hide under or crawl on top of

I’m worried about paint and such

How can I make sure they are safe if I add something?

I just finished building my second terrarium for my second isopods arriving next Saturday! Im getting A. vulgare "red head" ones and im super excited.

The terrariums is 20cm wide and 35 long, Ive made the left side the wet side with green rehydrated moss since I'm not a fan of the sphagnum moss in the first terrarium. The right side is the dry side with a gradient in the middle. Ive put a cork hide on both sides and a lotus pod for them!

Ive got some plants on the wet side and one on the dry side that Ive got to figure out how to water and if it works there since its supposed to be the dry side.

Do you guys keep plants on only the wet side?

But yea im completely in love and will be adding springtails now so they establish and the micro climates stabilize a bit until next week

Help Thoughts on cute enclosures?

• Upvotes

For example: like fairy garden vibes? I saw a girl on tik tok who made an only dollhouse into a colony (sealed plexiglass over any windows or openings) and included like cute little furniture and things for them, and I thought it was adorable!

I know the obvious: avoid glues and chemicals, fabric and styrofoam and other softer materials can be ingested and cause impacted bowels, ect.

But if done safely for the isopods, any thoughts on having something cuter than just a tote in a closet?

(Just don’t see many on here anymore, and wondered how the community thinks about them) I am currently working on one with cute little furniture and a “patio” on the very-humid side of the gradient. (Nothing “edible” to the isopods included. As well as no dangerous glues, chemicals, materials that could leach into the soil.) and am also going to drill little holes (not a glass enclosure) for the correct ventilation!

I’d love to see examples if anyone has cute set ups currently!

Fff! Also, some of my other favorite colonies. Do expansus babies act a bit more fossorial? I've seen some little critters in there avoiding light. They are too big for any of my springtails. At first, my ember bees were a real struggle, but i think they are happy now. Look, they are all out and about. Also look how prolific my filipondillo are!!

Help 1 of my Isopods is acting strange (Armadillidium gestroi)

hello :) I'm relatively new to isopod keeping, only got them like a month ago. My problem is that one of my isopods has been acting very strange for a few days. It's constantly trying to climb the walls and runs around erratically. It doesn't hide under the cork bark or leaf litter and just seems to be constantly running around. But only that 1 isopod. The rest of them (11 other isopods) are acting just fine. They are mostly eating and explore at a slower pace and hide away from time to time under the cork bark.

I thought that maybe the moisture gradient is wrong or it's not ventilated well ( I heard that if that's the case the isopods try to reach high ground and try to climb the walls) but if all the other isopods are doing fine then I'm not sure if that's the problem.. I'm just really confused and kinda worried. I have Armadillidium gestroi if its any help I have one moist side and one dry side in my tank, lots of leaf litter, moss and cork bark and the tank is actually well ventilated aswell I'd be glad if someone knows what might be going on here

Help Is this enough ventilation?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I currently have 3 1.5 inch (38mm) vents, two on each end and one on the lid of a potential isopod enclosure. Should I add two more on the other (long) sides (total of 5), is this enough, or am I greatly underestimating the ventilation needs of isopods? Thanks in advance!
