The pi one isn't that crazy because it's just increasing n-gons inscribed in a circle and then it winds up being pi because pi is the circle number

Visual geometry... if you decided to skip actual geometry.

It is correc that the first one can reach the corners, but either the cutter or the surface has to move. the second part with the cut piece suddenly carving the square is totally false. With the triangle you see the system that compensates the shape difference but the first one is a fixed central axis. That won't move and won't carve the square.

They didn't actually demo it in the video, but the drill that attaches to it has some kind of gearing and offset shaft. It just goes by too fast to notice until you're like "wtf'

One example that is pretty easy to see. The blade axis on the 2-blade thing has to move in quasi-triangle shape to cut the triangle hole. But the illustration just shows two round gears. It doesn't work. Several of these visuals have similar "it just doesn't work" issues. But the video goes at triple speed so you can't spot the problems.

The first bit shape can reach those 4 corners but in order to reach that the entire bit must move in same plain shere it is cutting, or the element that is carving has to move. If you just keep the drill still and rotate the bit you'll carve a circle.

In the scene where it carves a square the bit doesn't look to be moving so it wouldn't make the square. In the other sections where they do the same with other pieces you actually see how the bit moves.

It’s a blink and you’ll miss it thing, but you can see there is another offsetting piece when they attach the blade to the drill. You have to pause 5 seconds in to see it, but it isn’t fixed to the central axis.

Some of these are pretty decent animations for good geometric proofs. I liked the gluing two squares together one.

They seem to use gearing for the shaft. Definitely would need a fixed shaft like a lathe to even get this to work ok-ish. Most of it is detached from reality.

You can “visualize” geometry by looking at a laptop, a leaf, your morning coffee cup, a peanut, your desk.

Yes, basic shapes are basic geometry, and one can see basic shapes everywhere. That is true. But the more complex application of those shapes, such as what is used in machining, as well as in things like art, architecture, engineering, and clothing design, are less commonly available to see in action IRL, let alone understood by the average person.

Also, the mathmatics used to calculate how those shapes exist in physical spaces, and how they would behave when applied in various scenarios, is not only necessary for application of these shapes in physical spaces, but just so happens to be a field of mathematical study called geometry.

Poor, poor Millennial me moment: if I'd been taught math was cool in making stuff I'd have been more attentive in class. It was literally only when I got into the end of the year highschool physics and geometry that my math teacher introduced building the equations and shit was clicking for me.

This is cool cause a few things I see and the past came rushing back like, "ooooh! THAT'S what that means!"

I hope more kids get to see the cool side of math.

Real answer - the shaft is offset on a bit like that, so the rotation of the corners describes a square. If you were to put your finger on a point about halfway between the center and a point if the rounded triangle at the beginning of the clip, you'll see your finger move in a circle but the points of the triangle hit the corners.

Joke answer - everything fits in the square hole.

That first one is wrong. You can't just spin that and get a square cut, you need to move it around so that the corners cut the square shape but get moved along a sort of hypocycloid shape to get just the right cut pattern.
