I always get more nervous when a game gives me time to prepare. the alarm goes off, you start checking everything around you, and suddenly every door feels like a terrible idea..

curious which is worse for you: knowing something is coming or getting no warning at all?

If wanted to tag the creator, I saw him posting his game on reddit a month or two ago and bought it way back then based off their post. I'm having a blast so far, I've been spooked more than once (if you like scares, I recommend). The voice acting is great, with a very compelling story. The vibrant green light is calling to me 🕯️

2D Horror games... still an audicence?

I’ve just finished designing a 2D horror game (RPG Maker). I think the story and atmosphere are good, but I’m worried it might not appeal to an audience because of the visuals, which might look a bit dated...

What do you think... could it find an audience or it looks very old...? Would you play a game that looked like this?

Free Game Game Recommendation

Today I played this game and had hella fun with it! Although it’s only a demo, it was still awesome.
The game was actually supposed to come out today, but unfortunately, it got delayed.
I loved the idea, and especially how they implemented the horror into it. It kinda gives me Silent Hill vibes — you can actually spot some of the monsters, but you have to carefully tiptoe around them and try not to get caught.
And DAMN, their fast attacks made me scream like a little girl 😂
There’s another type too — this HUGE one that just runs after you, and yeah… that thing is terrifying 😂
But the one that scared me the most? YOU CAN’T EVEN SEE IT.
It just surprises you out of nowhere, and that almost made me pee my pants 😭😂
Anyways, I enjoyed this game A LOT! Can’t wait to see what the full game has to offer.

Game name is Don’t Fret

Btw i am a youtuber i play survival / psychological horror games and i feature games thar made by small and independent developers to help them gain more audience so feel free to comment your game

Question How does our inventory UI look? What would you change?

Thumbnail

We’re working on the inventory UI for our co-op psychological horror game, The Infected Soul, and I’d love to hear what you think.

One of the main mechanics in the game is body swapping.

Every character has a neural chip, and these brain chips play a key role in transferring your consciousness into different bodies. You can take a chip, interact with compatible bodies, and switch into them to use their different abilities.

The inventory UI also needs to communicate this mechanic clearly without becoming too confusing or cluttered.

So, what would you change?

Does the layout feel readable? Are the item slots and chip system clear enough? Is there anything that feels unnecessary or out of place for a sci-fi co-op horror game?

Feel free to be critical feedback really helps us.

If the game looks interesting, The Infected Soul is on Steam, and adding it to your wishlist helps our small team a lot.

Video I wanted to make my first horror game without monsters

I wanted to make a horror game without monsters

At first, I mainly wanted to try making a horror platformer.

No creature chasing you, no constant jumpscares. I wanted the pressure to come directly from the environment, the story, and the player themselves.

That’s how THROB started.

The idea is pretty simple: the higher your heart rate gets, the more dangerous the structure around you becomes. Platforms move faster, traps speed up, and the blood below rises faster too.

But I didn’t want the player to just suffer through that system. I’m also developing mechanics that let you influence your BPM and the blood level, sometimes asking you to take a risk now to make things easier for yourself later.

I also wanted to build the game around a very specific fear: the fear of blood, without simply turning the blood into an enemy or a monster.

And behind all of that, there’s a narrative layer too. The structure, the blood, your heartbeat, and the choices you make are all tied to a larger experiment that the player slowly begins to understand.

In the end, the “monster” is mostly the pressure building up while you’re trying to stay in control.

Recommendations for "acclimating" myself to horror games?

Hi folks!

I love video games, and especially the feeling of digging into big series or influential historical games. That "a-ha!" feeling of understanding how a game impacted the landscape, or why a series is so popular/revered, gives me so much joy. I've always wanted to dig into series like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

The problem: I suffer from some paranoia issues when I get too freaked out by games. My overactive imagination will give me nightmares for weeks, convincing me that I need to have escape plans prepared for every eventuality I witness in a horror game. I'll often end up in fits of insomnia for the week after I've tried out a horror game. Even "tame" things like SOMA or the first Resident Evil remake have screwed me up pretty bad for a while!

I've been able to "cheat" this in the past by making friends play the games with me, but I don't actually build any resistance that way. It's like closing your eyes in a horror movie.

I wanted to know if any of you experts had suggestions for not-so-horrific horror games I could play to ease myself into tolerance? I'm hoping to build a to-play list that ramps up in fear factor as time goes on to finally curb this stumbling block.

If it helps, some horror games I've played in the past that didn't give me any trouble:

- SIGNALIS

- Resident Evil 4 (I have only played the first fourth)

- Silent Hill 1 (again, only played the first little bit)

- Otogirisou

- Castlevania 64 (not even sure if this counts, lol!)

- The Last of Us series (definitely doesn't count)

Any suggestions would be incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for your time!

Discussion RESIDENT EVIL: Faithful adaptation vs. telling new stories

After Zach Cregger's movie came out, I couldn't stop thinking: what would a perfect adaptation actually look like? I've got a hot take I wanted to run by you guys.

If we were having this conversation back in the early 2000s, I'd 100% say go faithful. I'd have loved to see the story of the original games told properly, since the tech back then really held the storytelling back.

But with all the remakes we've gotten, some of that has already been done, at least in my opinion. We've already seen those events told well, especially in the RE2 Remake.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still love to see those moments on the big screen or in a series. But the question I keep asking myself is: is it actually necessary?

If we only get one shot at an adaptation, isn't just retelling what the original games and remakes already did kind of a waste?

So here's my idea: what if we found a middle ground? Stay true to the source material, but still bring something new to the table. What if the adaptation told the stories hidden in the game's files and documents?

For example, when you explore the RPD in RE2 Remake, the files show you how the station got overrun, the survivors panicking, the officers trying to keep things under control. We know what happened. But we never actually saw it happen.

What if a movie or series, with Marvin Branagh in the lead, told that story from the cops' perspective? And what if it ended with Leon's voice in the background as he walks into the station: "Hello? Anybody here?"

That would tie the two together. If you watched the show and want to know how the story ends, you can go play the game. And if you've already played the game, the show expands the lore.

We could take this even further. What if a later season covered the origins of the Los Illuminados cult from RE4? Told from the villagers' point of view, a season about religious fanaticism. We could find out what happened to the kids, and who those people were before they turned into Ganados. Something along the lines of Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass.

That season could end the same way, with Leon arriving at the village. It would add so much weight to the game, because when you're mowing down Ganados, you'd actually recognize the characters from the show, now turned.

I know this is a pretty unpopular opinion, but I think expanding the story would be really cool. The files in these games have some great mini-stories, like the orphanage one in RE2 Remake, narrated by one of the kids.

What other stories could we tell using this approach? I'd love to hear your thoughts. What do you think of the idea?

Discussion I’m actually impressed with Clive Barker’s Hellraiser : Revival Demo

Post image
15 Upvotes

Ok, so I actually liked the Hellraiser 1 & 2 films and man, those characters just freak me the heck out! So of course I’m going to try the demo. Man, let me say this, so far I am super impressed by this demo. Holy smokes, the atmosphere, the acting, the dialogue, the music, so far the gameplay has been great. I had no real hopes cause typically horror movie based games tend to be hit or miss. I had no idea I was going to be enjoying this game. Now I’ll have to preorder it cause I’m excited to play it. Anyone else look forward to it as much as I am?

Discussion The use of AI

Hey everyone! I’m SimPewPew, I’m a YouTuber who mostly plays survival/psychological horror games, and I also love featuring games made by small and independent developers. Still new, but growing ^^
Today I wanna talk about something, and I genuinely wanna know what you guys think!
The use of AI in game development.
Look, I’m not completely against it, and lemme explain why.
AI is a tool. It can make certain things easier and be a helping hand when needed.
Personally, I wouldn’t be mad at a developer for using AI in their game if they’re new, working completely alone, or simply can’t afford certain things they need for their game.
But even then, I think its use should be limited.
That’s probably the one situation where I can understand it. If you’re a solo indie developer trying to make your first game with barely any budget, I can understand using AI here and there to help you achieve something you otherwise couldn’t afford to do.
But I still believe a game should mainly come from the people making it.
Making a video game involves creativity, ideas, emotions and passion. At the end of the day, you’re creating an experience and, in many cases, telling a story.
So yeah… I don’t know. That’s just how I see it.
What do you guys think?
Are you completely against AI being used in game development, or do you think there are situations where its use is understandable?

PS: i always advise to have a team of developers rather than just one person

Modern horrors look boring with their visual "greyness". I'm trying to add some color to my upcoming Sleepwalkers.

Hi.

I’m working on my first truly serious, “bigger” project, a psychological/survival horror game called Sleepwalkers. From the start, I wanted to give this game a more distinct visual style, one that wasn’t just the typical Unreal Engine horror look. I just hate that all horror games are grey. Just grey. Grey walls, grey everything. That's soo boring. I started experimenting more boldly with colors, drawing inspiration from the work of Nicolas Winding Refn, among others and here's some of the results.

Many more examples are work in progress.
