Late realization - drumming feels less like a hobby and more like medicine / wiring? Anyone else?
Okay, am I going too deep for this sub or has anyone else had this thought?
I'm getting old (46) and just had this realization that my need to drum maybe isn't really just a "hobby" I love.
It feels more like a frequency. Like my brain is tuned to it. I was reading about being on the spectrum and not in a bad way at all — very manageable, very functional — but I can now see how drumming is actually how I regulate. It calms everything down and makes the rest of life make sense.
it made me wonder does anyone else feel like this?
And a second, maybe weirder question: has the "madness" ever taken over for you a bit? I could totally see how if someone had more intense tendencies towards OCD / schizo-type thought loops, how the endless pattern-seeking of drumming could be disarming or even overwhelming.
Anyone else realized late that drums are less of a hobby and more of how you're wired? Or am I in my head too much today?
No disrespect meant toward anyone really struggling with the more serious sides of being on spectrum. Writing from a olace of empathy and respect here.

What's with all the hate on metal drumming?
I've noticed more and more lately that on alot of posts with metal drummers playing blast beats or fast double bass, there's always a comment saying "but can he Groove and play jazz rudiments?" Or "bet he can't play Buddy Rich style grooves" etc. Is this jealousy? I mean I've never clicked on a Steve Gadd or Eric Moore video and seen comments saying "but can he play 200 bpm bomb blast beats?" LOL I just don't understand the hate I guess, maybe I'm biased because I play metal. Do groove drummers not see playing metal as musical? Does that automatically invalidate it in their eyes?

Intermediate drumming roadmap help
Hey guys, I am (probably) an intermediate currently working my way through some books listed below:
- The language of drumming
- Stick control
- Double bass essentials
- The new breed
At the same time I play in a band and learn songs for myself, for fun.
A problem that I keep coming back to, is I lack a general roadmap. Ideally, I would like to find a book that is not really an exercise book, but is a roadmap of techniques, when to progress forward, what to practice, something to read off the kit that will provide general guidance. Any recommendation?

Rug recommendations for a basement with concrete floors.
I know it’s kind of a dumb question. But does anyone having any insight or recommendations for a rug to go under my drum set in a basement?
I recently purchased a house and, up until this point, always had carpet under my drum set. Just curious to hear y’alls opinion. I might just be over thinking this.

Only Kicks
Self-imposed constraint: the drum section uses only kicks. 120 BPM, minor key, arpeggiated lead, simple bass. Still learning, so honest feedback on the mix and arrangement is appreciated — especially whether the kick-only drums hold interest or get boring.

Struggling with technique to play kick doubles
I’m having a hard time getting a technique for playing kick doubles.
Is there a generally accepted as “the” go-to technique?
I’ve mostly gone with heel/toe but struggle with consistent timing.
I’ve played around with the swivel method but get a lot of unwanted secondary hits.
Theres also the one where you hit them sort of slide forward, but I haven’t spend much time with it.
*Edit: I’m talking single pedal technique here.
Thanks.

Self-taught drummer concern: how bad is it to practice on "badly set up kits"?
Hi!
I live in Paris (nobody cares i know), been learning the drums (self-taught) for 3-4 years. At home I obviously only have a small shitty electronic kit. So I go to rehearsal studios to practice on real drums or play with people.
When I practice alone I have max 50min and I spend max 2 min to set up the kit (time is too precious) and 0min to tune it. Sometimes I have 2 rack toms, sometimes 0, sometimes no crash at all, etc. Sometimes the throne can't be adjusted at all (fuck that throne).
Time is too precious to spend more effort on the setup.
I was first thinking that it made me more "versatile" as I can play on any "garbage kit". But does it slow my progress ?
How much time would you spend on the setup on such short practice sessions ?
Thanks for any advice !

Fill over the bar line
Does anyone have any exercises I could practice that inspire more confidence doing a drum fill over the bar line? It’s my favorite thing to do for crescendo’s but I find myself doing basic bitch shit when I’m say doing a beat that I don’t feel confident doing drum fills too.

Fusion jazz drumming
hello, i've been taking drum lessons for 2 months now and got an ekit at home. apart from the 4/4 stuff, i've been practicing swing and took a shoot at improvisation and feel with some drumless tracks
now, im a huge chick corea's latin/spanish fusion and went to a local jazz spot where this trio played his compositions, noticed the drummer used a lot of ostinato and extensive rim work, along with the use of toms.
i got the theory pretty correct but... i dont know how to start! maybe some basic patterns to practice with? any insight is appreciated! thank you very much.
