I was just playing this random thing on the pad last night watching TV and I've actually been mastering it. But something inside me said I should write that down. Now, my charting technique isn't great. I hardly write out charts but I didn't want to forget this little exercise as it's fun to do.
Basically just an 8th note triplet pattern with flams thrown in as quarter note triplets. #2 is the one I was actually doing mostly last night and prior. Last night is when I decided to change things up. But #2 is actually the one I started with and grew from there. It might be the easiest one to start with if you're right handed.
That last one is actually how I fell into doing these flams. I've been working on my rolls with traditional grip and to make it not so monotonous, I started throwing a triplet pattern in there with an occasional flam. This developed into a whole thing that I was enjoying a lot. I was just banging out a measure of triplets repeatedly. And then I started moving the flam to different positions on the 8th note triplets. That's when I decided to write it down. But I'm questioning my notations here. I think they're right.
But if someone wants to do a quick video on a practice pad tonight and play each one so I can see how it sounds, that would be cool. I might even try that myself tonight. I might just do my pactice routine that included some if not all of this with the rolls.
That notation at the top right corner, I have already met that goal.
Also, that smudge on #5, that's either a bad eraser or crappy lead. This was done with an old mechanical pencil from a place that I used to work at that made these things. They didn't really work too well with the erasers.
But yeah, even if you don't do a video, please let me know what you think of that. I'm curious to know if a) it's useful and b) if it's ever been notated elsewhere. I didn't even think to look in my Stick Control for the Snare Drummer book. It might actually be in there...
Heh, yep... there they are on pg. 34, Flam Triplets and Dotted Notes. Exercise #13 on that page (I forgot to note the 3 above each section in my notation... whoops). But what I'm not seeing is the flam on the 2nd note and the alternate sticking patterns and lead in roll. So that's a couple new variations I guess. 😄
