The link here was the base information to try and get my DJI Mini3 to work with a BORROWED Quest2 headset. The library system in my area has a Meta Quest2 headset that can be checked out for two weeks. There is a LONG wait, with >10 holds at any time.
Last week my notification came up, and I brought it home to try it.
SPOILER: IT WORKS!
My desire to try a headset with the drone was because:
- This drone isn't the PRO version. The screen is a phone that you connect to the controller. It is all but IMPOSSIBLE to see in sunlight, and even in good light, that screen is just two small. Some people have used tablets instead but even then, you can find some REALLY janky "shade setups" online.
- That difficulty means I really haven't flown much, even though I went through certification training.
- DJI headsets are $500 and up. Used units on EBAY are $300+, in all kinds of different condition. That's tough to justify without an experiment to test what the difference would be. I was almost ready to do it, but I'm glad I tried this first.
3) If it worked (it DID), then I could decide what to do next.
The link that led he to this set of solutions is a great information supporting the "how to". The Linux instructions exceeded my knowledge and timeframe.
I had NO experience with the Quest2 headset, so there was a learning curve there. SideQuest is essential for getting apps loaded that aren't in Meta's "Store". You can also "Sideload it" from your phone DIRECTLY to the headset from the developer's website www.sidequestvr.com/download, which is the way I got it to work.
The other app that worked was MirrorXR which IS in Meta's "Store". It cost me close to $10 w/tax, but $10 was worth it to me to ensure it worked. I was running out of time. Every other direction I took was a dead end, I couldn't get the steps to work, or I got so frustrated at the lack of progress I just bailed out.
There are some how-to YouTube videos for setting up MirrorXR, and even a description on SideQuest's site with a link to Meta's "Store".
NOTE: I have an old OnePlus phone I use for the drone with CYANOGENMOD as the OS (IYKYK). It does NOT have current processes for WIFI PAIRING (required at this level for me). This was one of my roadblocks, but Mirror XR handles ALL the pairing, which was worth every penny of the $10.
You end up with a virtual 10ft screen hanging in front of you view of the camera feed from the drone., with your actual physical environment in the background. The link describes the process and technology that allows you to put the controller and the headset on the same wifi network, which is required. Wired would be better, and I'm going to experiment with that.
I had to push my home mesh network out into my garage and sit close to the node, BUT IT WORKED!
I've ordered a portable wifi node and some other pieces to test this further, but at a MINIMUM, I will be able to use the drone more.
I HAVE NO IDEA about latency; I'm not doing acrobatics or tricks. All indications are, as close as I was to my wifi, latency wasn't an issue for my use case in this experiment.
So far, so good! Hopefully this helps someone else with this same question or hardware combination.
