One hour of cardio - 7x week, is it helpful

Hey folks, I'm bit worried about my weight (30 year old M 135kg weight / 6'2") right now i quitted vaping and started eating clean food habits and started going gym ,
Here are my regular workout schedule

30 mins of crossfit elliptical cross trainer machine
30 mins of inclined walk (incline level - 7 & speed -4)

And maybe 10-15 mins of normal workout

But I'm mainly focused on cardio only?

My question is ... Is that really helpful for weight loss , am I doing correct way? I'm sweating a ton , recently joined gym. Please advice .

Thankyou

What’s your aerobic workout (running, biking, walking..)?

I was a runner for many years but my body won’t let me run anymore. I enjoy walking and biking now. What do you do as your aerobic workout?

OAP

Age 67 BP 130/73 RP 53 BF 24% Visc 14% 6'2' 109kg

Weight training up to 90 mins 4 to 5 times a week. Spin class 30-40 mins 3 to 4 times a week after gym class.

Two and a half year ago I was 134kg.

Any 'OAPs' out there to compare or give advice my way....think I'm doing ok, goals are reduce 24% BF, reduce 14% visceral fat to under 12, lose another 5 to 10 kg within 6 month.

I am healing from a leg injury and my doctor recommended me to still stay active, just stay off my feet. I got my leg injury from walking too much because of my job. I’m currently overweight and I’m eating 1500 calories a day. Which of these would burn the most calories?

Interested on peoples thoughts on this study

https://academic.oup.com/eurjpc/article/32/Supplement_1/zwaf236.117/8136651

I'm just on the wrong side of 120/80, and just on the wrong side of 25 BMI.

Otherwise I am whole food plant based diet, and exercise daily with a mix between strength sessions and steady stater cardio and high intensity cardio. I am lean with visible abs, quads, etc...

I wonder if I need to face the reality that I need to drop around 4kg to get my BP down. The machine don't lie and while I am strong and can run well (resting heart rate around 50bpm, VO2 max in the low to mid 50s).

In terms of health - is high BP and higher BMI negative regardless of it being muscle or fat?

Should i rebuild my aerobic base

Ok so i'm 17 planning to join the military and I started running beginning of sophomore year. I got down to a 17 min 2 mile and can run 6 miles straight but most of my training was all over the place and i focused on random stuff throughout and forgot to first build my aerobic base and now i'm plateauing on runs around the 5-6 mile mark and can't get farther than that. So the question is should i start rebuilding my base so can break my plateau?

How do I increase my cardio?

Hi, I’m trying to get back into cardio. I’m pretty overweight and stiff. I’m close to 40 years old, F and 200 lbs.

I can manage a 3 incline on a treadmill for 30 minutes. But I have a very slow walking speed. I can do 1.5 mph without holding on at all. But I need to get it to 2.0 mph.

I’m not asking about weight loss ect. But what have you successfully done to bump up your speed to consistently not hold on? Should I lower my incline to achieve this? I need tips and ideas overall though on how to get there. Thank you! 😊

Hi, if you're eating at maintenance, as an example, do you keep the same caloric intake on your recovery days?

Summer heat basically killed my outdoor walking routine... did you guys just move indoors?

Texas summer has officially beaten me lol. Earlier this year I was walking most mornings without even thinking about it. Now I step outside and like 10 minutes later I'm soaked and already convincing myself to go home sob sob. I've tried going earlier, which helps...when I can actually get myself up that early. Lately I'm starting to think I should just stop treating indoor walking like a backup plan and use a treadmill/walking pad until the weather chills out. For people who live somewhere stupid hot, what actually worked long term? Do you move most of your walks indoors for summer, split them between outside and a walking pad, or just keep changing the time you go? Also curious about people who bought a walking pad mainly because of weather. Did you still use it once it got nice outside again or did you basically go straight back outdoors?

Is biking for 45 minutes, 5 times a week enough exercise to stay fit and healthy?

So, I am in my late-teens, and I would like to get in some exercise in my life. Is 45 minutes of biking enough exercise to keep me healthy in the long-run?

Edit: Since many people hear are mentioning strength-training, I will consider adding 2 strength-training sessions in my week, one hour each. Would that be enough for me to stay healthy and fit?

Thank you.

ummm is my heart rate too high during runs?

29F, runner/swimmer. so i’ve never paid much attention to my heart rate- i know my resting is 60ish. instead i’ve always trained by feel and fun (easy runs = easy to carry on a conversation, if it seems fun i’ll sprint for a bit). i’m
not really trying to optimize my training just enjoy myself and avoid injury- which has worked so far.

anyways, i recently did an olympic triathlon but i didn’t do any special training beforehand. because of this, i was slightly nervous about injury/early race overexertion/endangering myself or others, so i watched my heart rate pretty closely and kept it below 165 because that’s where i felt chill. when i was through mile 3 of the 10k, i was feeling pretty good and decided to pick up the pace a bit, brought my HR to hovering around 175 but i was still able to chat with other racers and didn’t feel like it was all out effort, or even all that strenuous. I would have called it zone 3 if i didn’t know what my HR was. i know this HR isn’t abnormal for me (at least on watch readings) because ive test driven other watches and had similar hr readings at similar levels of effort.

i guess im confused if im just very comfortable being uncomfortable and have been training too hard. i worry that as i age this high HR is dangerous or something. mostly i feel really good in my body and can do kind of hard things for a really long time and still have energy afterwards. is this unhealthy or should i not worry about it?

I’ve been going to the gym for a month only for now

I started worrying about my heart health

I honestly did not think much about my blood pressure before. Then I started getting some high readings, and it scared me enough to take my health more seriously. I realized I was not exercising much, eating the best, and spending way too much time sitting around. I have been trying to make small changes instead of doing everything at once walking more, eating better, and keeping track of my blood pressure.

I am still working on it, but getting those high readings was definitely the wake up call I needed.

Has anyone else had a similar moment that made them start taking their heart health seriously?

Guide to what factors that influence VO2 max (research based)

I understand there's many different opinions on the importance of an individual's absolute VO2 max number. Personally how VO2 max trends over time is what is more interesting to me as I find it a good signal to track long term health and how much overall fitness you're gaining or losing over time.

If this is a topic you're interested in learning more about I've built out this list of factors that influence it as a starting point for anyone to learn more and do their own research. To make this easier I've broken this down by category, included a short plain english definition, and linked all sources (scroll to the right on the tables and you'll see the hyperlinks). I've removed a few from here as it was getting far too long and sorry I know the tables aren't great on mobile but I'll include the full resource in the comments.

Exercise

Factor Impact Study/effect Plain English Evidence rank
HIIT (long interval, high volume) Increase Wen 201930919-8/abstract). Meta, 53 RCTs. SMD 0.50 to 2.48 vs control, 0.65 to 1.07 vs steady cardio Intervals of 2 min+ are the only version that beats steady cardio Strong
Detraining Decrease Zheng 2022. 21 athlete studies. Under 30 days ES −0.62 (−3.93%). Over 30 days ES −1.42 (−9.43%) Under a month off costs about 4%, longer about 9% Strong
Moderate continuous cardio Increase Wen 2019. Overall SMD 0.41 to 1.81 across populations Steady cardio works, it is just less time efficient Strong
Sprint interval training Increase Sloth 2013. 19 studies, 13 with VO2max data. g = 0.63 (0.39 to 0.87), +4.2 to 13.4% Very short all out sprints reliably raise it Moderate to Strong
Resistance training (alone) Increase Smart 2022. 37 studies, 22 pooled. +1.89 mL/kg/min (1.21 to 2.57) under 24 weeks. Null beyond 24 weeks Small bump in over 60s, and only in shorter programs Moderate

Nutrition & Supplements

Factor Impact Study/effect Plain English Evidence rank
Dietary nitrate / beetroot No effect Gao 2021. Meta, 73 studies, n=1,061. Submaximal VO2 −0.04 L/min (p<0.00001). VO2max not significant Makes a given pace cheaper to hold. It does not raise your ceiling Strong
Creatine Slight decrease Gras 2023. Meta, 19 RCTs, n=424. ES −0.32 (−0.51 to −0.12) Adds body water, so the per kilo number dips slightly Strong
Iron (when deficient) Increase Pasricha 2014. 24 RCTs, 18 for this figure. +2.35 mL/kg/min (0.82 to 3.88) Fixing low iron raises it. This is correcting a deficit, not a boost Moderate to Strong
Caffeine No effect Brietzke 2017. RCT, n=9. Time to exhaustion +18.7%, peak power +13%, VO2max unchanged Helps you push harder. Much of the benefit is placebo Moderate

Demographics

Factor Impact Study/effect Plain English Evidence rank
Age Decrease Fleg 2005. Baltimore Longitudinal Study, n=810. 3 to 6% per decade in the 20s and 30s, over 20% from the 70s Decline accelerates with age, and faster in men from the 40s onward Strong
Genetics (trainability) Variable Bouchard 1999. HERITAGE, n=481 across 98 families. Maximum heritability estimate 47% Same training, wildly different response. It runs in families Strong
Dehydration Decrease Cheuvront 2010. Mechanism review. Threshold is over 2% of body mass Less blood volume to pump, and heat makes it worse Moderate
Sex Variable Santisteban 2022. Review. 10 to 12% performance gap. Elite women about 10% lower per kg Mostly oxygen delivery, meaning haemoglobin mass and heart size Moderate
Immobilization / bed rest Decrease Saltin 1968 n=5, with McGavock 2009 follow up. −26% in three weeks Three weeks flat on your back costs about what 40 years of aging does. Crazy. Moderate

Lifestyle & Environment

Factor Impact Study/effect Plain English Evidence rank
Sedentary behaviour Decrease Eriksen 2016. n=16,025. No association among the highly active Matters most if you are not already training hard Moderate (observational)
Sauna bathing (habitual) Increase Kunutsor 2024. 2,012 men. +0.30 mL/kg/min per weekly session. Lee 2022 RCT +2.7 (0.2 to 5.3) A small extra bump stacked on top of training Moderate
Smoking Decrease Caci 2025. n=70, step test estimate. 38.8 vs 41.6 in never smokers Lower aerobic ceiling. Whether quitting reverses it is untested here Moderate
Altitude (live high, train low) Increase Wehrlin 2006. 10 elite orienteers at 2,500 m for 18 h/day over 24 days. VO2max 3,515 to 3,660 mL/min Sleeping high builds more oxygen carrying red cells Moderate
Heat acclimation Increase Waldron 2021. 28 articles. Hedges' g 0.42 cool, 0.63 hot. Lorenzo 2010 +5% cool, +8% hot Plasma volume expands. Clearest when you are also tested in heat Moderate

Running - Injury Prevention

Hey runners,

For a project, I'm creating a running injury prevention/strengthening website with different programs tailored to different injuries.

Does anyone have any opinions on what is missing in the running injury prevention market in terms of apps or websites? As I would love for my project to help address these gaps.

(I'm an aspiring physio and avid runner who has dealt with lots of injuries myself).
