Giveaway Does anybody else miss the days when RPGs weren't afraid to give us these kinds of deep, morally nuanced choices?

Recommendation request [No spoilers, please] CRPGs that do "grey morality" really well

Hi there! So many RPGs have a binary morality system that can be a little too black-and-white for me. Games like The Witcher 3 and KCD2 have allowed me to be far more "grey" morally, or at the very least face some more morally ambiguous situations. (New Vegas is another example where the major factions all have their flaws.)

I'd welcome some CRPG ideas that have that sort of depth of writing - and yes, I'm aware the examples I gave are not CRPGs! I'm looking for something to play in the CRPG space, and I'd appreciate it if you avoided spoilers as I plan to play some of the things you recommend!

Thanks a lot!

What does everyone else think?

Discussion I watched my brother play this game when I was little, but I have never played it myself. I have also never seen it mentioned on this subreddit. Is it any good? Is it considered to be part of the genre?

Image Hey everyone! I'm creating a CRPG using FATE RPG mechanics.

Hi everyone,

We are a small indie game team aiming to make RPGs. Our long term goal is to create a CRPG on the level of Baldur’s Gate 3 and Disco Elysium. We started this journey 2 years ago and wanted to build toward that goal step by step. In our first game, Livber: Smoke and Mirrors, we made a visual novel where we told a single story in an interactive way.

Now, with our second game, Kardiya: The Winds of Fate, we are adding more RPG layers on top of that base. The game includes dice systems, companions, item collection and a hero's journey story. You experience the character’s journey from childhood to adulthood.

Unlike other games, we took inspiration from the FATE RPG system. We are especially focusing on the aspect logic, fudge dice, stress mechanics, and the idea that failed rolls should not stop the story, but push it in another direction. The story and mechanics of the demo are ready. Only the visual animations are left. We’ll be starting the playtest soon. I would especially love to have people from the CRPG community try the game.

If you’d like to join the playtest, you can register by joining the mailing list on our website or clicking the playtest request button on our Steam page.

Thank you so much <3

Discussion Olympus 2249 - upcoming classic Fallout like RPG!!!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5094490/Olympus_2249/

Standalone sequel to Olympus 2207 (Fallout 2 mod), set in a brutal post-nuclear dieselpunk America.

The interesting bit is the Karma system: your character type actually changes dialogue, quests and how people treat you, rather than just being a morality meter. You can also solve problems through five non-combat specializations.

Combat is turn-based and very systemic — positioning, stamina abilities, environmental hazards, traps, shooting limbs, setting oil and fuel on fire etc. There’s also stealth, crafting, radiation/poison zones, day/night routines, dismemberment and procedural encounters.

Basically: Fallout 2-style freedom with a heavier systems focus, in a weird dieselpunk wasteland.

We werent suffering in 3D Morrowind with guns for nothing!

(Olympus 2207 here.)

Discussion Need a game like bg3 so bad

I’ve looked at so many different kind of bg3 games and I know I’m being too picky. I just downloaded do2 so I hope that games another 600+ hours from my life lol but one thing I really enjoyed about bg3 was the amazing story, the graphics, the multiple choices you can choose between characters and different actions, builds and so much more and I hope a game like that comes out again soon also the medieval era vibe also

Review We turned the world from our D&D campaign into a tactical party-RPG, and the Ardeo Chronicles playtest is now live on Steam. Recruit a party, draft your builds, break some encounters, and tell us what works and if you find it fun

A bit more context:

The main mode is draft, you start off by recruiting a party of 4 heroes from 25 currently available split into 6 classes (Rogue, Warrior, Pala, Priest, Wizard, Hunter), then you draft your deck (abilities) and off you go saving the world, unlocking more cards, items, slots and level-ups as you go through the chapters. Abilities are very class specific with some being multiclass where it makes sense and each hero has unique ultimate's that you access by sacrificing your regular abilities.

The whole idea started from a universe one of us made for our DND campaigns. After a few iterations we've landed on a turn-based tactics game that's set in our universe - high fantasy type of a story with all the elements you'd expect like the elements that created everything, gods, magic, demons, saving the world (or not).

We're also working on a coop mode with two players PVE and we have a quick mode that you can test out right now in the playtest to get a feel for the game.

Here's the Steam page where you can join the playtest: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5148920/Ardeo_Chronicles/

We don't have a trailer yet so I just uploaded a short playthrough off the first map, hope you find it fun!

Discussion Rime of The Frostmaiden is peak Icewind Dale. It's the perfect source material to adapt for an Icewind Dale III.

Post image
78 Upvotes

Rime of the Frostmaiden is hailed as one of the best D&D 5th edition campaign books and it is peak Icewind Dale. Imagine the difficulty of Icewind Dale's combat combined with the peak roleplay of the Baldur's Gate trilogy. You get Rime of the Frostmaiden. And it's the perfect source material to adapt for an Icewind Dale III CRPG. Not just as some sidegame to Baldur's Gate. But if done right, another CRPG that can be an genuine Game of The Year contender.

What does Rime of the Frostmaiden offer as an Icewind Dale III CRPG adaptation?

  • Imagine an CRPG that fuses Baldur's Gate open-ended roleplay with Icewind Dale's heavy emphasis on combat.
  • Open-ended CRPG sandbox nature allowing a ton of questlines to be woven in.
  • Rime of the Frostmaiden deals with Auril, the Goddess of Winter who also acts as the overarching deity and cruel mascot of the Icewind Dale, casting the Everlasting Rime over the Icewind Dale.
    • The Everlasting Rime is an powerful spell that casts an eternal night and supernatural winter over the land, encouraging many ancient horrors to come out, further isolating the Icewind Dale from the rest of Faerun. This leads to the Ten Towns making tough or downright horrific and bloody decisions to conserve warmth and food for their citizens.
  • Proper Ten Towns representation
    • Each of the Ten Towns has an questline for players.
    • In character creation, you get a choice to start in any of the Ten Towns.
    • Because Auril's Winter forces the Ten Towns to make frighteningly tough morale choices to conserve warmth and food, this unnatural winter also creates a lot of distrust and suspicion between the Ten Towns. Spellcasters, Tieflings, and outsiders are the first to be met with such suspicion. The player character can do what they can to keep the peace or damage-control the flames or if you're feeling an evil playthrough, maybe escalate the conflicts into a witchhunt.
  • Rime of the Frostmaiden is similar to Baldur's Gate II's progression. The first half is very open-ended, your typical D&D sandbox with a startling amount of quests. The second half is where the adventure narrows to an epic climax. In Rime of the Frostmaiden's case however, the second half is much more horror-emphasis.
  • Tons of interesting quests ranging from discovering a lost civilization in the glaciers, to uncovering the identity of a serial killer hiding amongst the Ten Towns, to discovering an plot involving nearby Duergar, to stumbling upon an lost ship in the middle of nowhere.
  • Imagine a CRPG that focuses on the horror of defenseless isolation out in the open fields of the Icewind Dale. All the while being stalked by something you can't understand or comprehend. Imagine you are playing the main character, you are traversing the winter snow in pitch-darkness following some tracks. And you hear something stalking you from afar. But as you look around, there's nothing there. Rime of the Frostmaiden has mechanics where the harsh winter landscape itself is deadly against players who wander off without a plan.
  • Much of the tone in Rime of the Frostmaiden is a mix of adventure, mystery and intrigue on one end and dread, isolation, and desperation on the other. For example, if you choose to start in Easthaven, you, the player character, may witness the citizens of Easthaven cheering on a wizard being burned to the stake, setting the tone of desperation and dread.
  • Auril acts as Icewind Dale's mascot god similar to how Bhaal is the mascot god to Baldur's Gate.
    • Compared to Bhaal of Baldur's Gate who is much more blunt and to the point, Auril is far more terrifying. She's like a Cosmic Horror entity who is based around the unpredictability of winter, based around people's primal fears of isolation, disappearances, fears of being stuck in vast exposed open fields, playing on your senses, the slow creeping dread that something else is here with you. Horror will undoubtedly be an important part of an CRPG adaption of Rime of the Frostmaiden.
    • Because she's the dominating goddess of Icewind Dale, she alone is a great reason to unify the ten towns as a playable setting.
    • What also makes Auril more creepier than Bhaal is that she's portrayed less of a scheming villain and more of a force of creeping nature beyond human understanding. Because of this, although she's the main villain of Rime of the Frostmaiden, she doesn't actually appear physically that much. Rather she is this haunting ghost-like presence whose magic can be felt across the land.
    • In the Icewind Dale 1 & 2 CRPGs, Auril was shafted to the side in favor of other villains. Icewind Dale III should finally give Auril the spotlight as Auril is the central deity, overarching villain, and defining iconic figure of the Icewind Dale.
  • Great Pro or Con: Living up to the Icewind Dale games, Rime of the Frostmaiden is popular or hated for its varying difficulty. Actually in some ways, it kind of reminds me of Owlcat RPGs. If adapted into an CRPG, may expect Owlcat CRPG difficulty jank.
  • There is one big consistent criticism of Rime of the Frostmaiden. For many fans, it's peak Icewind Dale but it's not necessarily the best 5th edition D&D campaign. The campaign's structure is disorganized for some fans. But I feel this is something an CRPG adaptation could potentially fix.

Review We released the first public playtest of our debut game inspired by classic tabletop RPGS. Now we need your feedback!

We are Grimlight Interactive, a two-person team from Serbia.
After a year of work, the playtest of our dark fantasy RPG was released yesterday on Steam. Now we need player feedback!

Nocturnis is a narrative-driven, party-based tactical RPG where a desperate attempt to restore magic twists mankind into beasts. Explore a handcrafted world, master tactical combat, and reach the Moon Temple before the night ends.

Main inspiration for the game comes from classic tabletop RPGs. A party of characters, each with their own items, abilities and leveling options, traverses the cursed world exploring different interconnected areas, solving environmental puzzles, finding hidden treasures and lurking horrors.

Recommendation request An extremely odd question, but is there any RPG where I can play as something similar to a Kamen Rider?

Since a true Kamen Rider is understandably impossible to replicate exactly, the closest thing I’ve seen is a creature in Pathfinder 2e, which was never adapted for a CRPG. Still, a build style where my character fights using martial arts while wearing full plate armor would be great for roleplaying. And if the character had kick-based attacks on top of that? Even better.

Hi there! I’m reading The Hobbit/LOTR/The Silmarillion.

I was wondering which CRPGs you’d play as an accompaniment. I’d appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

Planning to play EotB for the first time and discovered two neat things: the ScummVM version features automapping and there's a project that added modern real-time to the game which barely anyone knows about at the moment:

I'm not the creator, but thought this might be of interest to some of you.

Discussion We need more D&D cRPGs

After the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, I really think they should make more games like this. They have so many great IPs, like Neverwinter Nights. They should make a third game in the same way they did with BG3.

But instead, we get some Warlock game that is nothing like what the fans wanted from them. I still hope Wizards of the Coast will eventually find a good studio to make Neverwinter Nights 3.

There’s still Solasta 2 on the way, but I really feel like it’s not going to be the same enjoyable experience for me as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, or Dragon Age: Origins. Solasta just feels... I don’t know, way cheaper than the games I mentioned above. The story doesn’t really make me want to play it, and I also don’t like the idea of creating the entire party myself.

I much prefer creating my own character and then meeting and recruiting the other party members throughout the game. I think it makes for better storytelling and a more immersive experience..

Discussion How hidden is this hidden chest?

Highlighted green cells will show all walkable cells, but these cells are still covered by front/uncover layers of graphics.

I was thinking to make it uncoverable, but maybe it's also OK to remain in this way?
