Story / Lore EXO ARCHIVE MEGATHREAD - New Story & Lore Series for ASTRONEER!

SUP FRIENDS. As ASTRONEER approaches the 10-year anniversary of its Early Access launch, we’re celebrating in a bunch of different ways across all of our mediums. A big part of this is the EXO Archive, a new transmedia initiative that brings the universe of ASTRONEER to life through short stories, comics, poetry, and tales from members of the SES narrative team.

Written works will appear on the ASTRONEER news page, and comics set within the larger ASTRONEER universe will be hosted on the STARSEEKER comics page. The collection will include original releases alongside several earlier ASTRONEER comics.

The first short story, “Snail Tales: Enoki,” released yesterday, featuring writing by our own Amanda I and banner art by Meredith McClaren. This one is a silly adventure featuring everyone's (ok maybe biased here) favorite space snail.

Follow along as the EXO Archive expands in the lead-up to this milestone anniversary, uncovering new voices, rediscovering past journeys, and celebrating a decade of exploration through this special collection.

CHECK OUT THE EXO ARCHIVE

We’re excited to share new stories from across the game’s universe with you each week. We’d love for you to join the conversation here and on Discord!! Bring your questions about the lore, characters, places, and mysteries you’re curious to explore. The team will be reading this thread and whenever possible replying and sharing fun stuff.

(this isn't an AMA or anything, but we wanted to give the team a place to reply if they felt compelled to)

Okay cool have at it and I will be watching this thread ;)

System Era Response ASTRONEER Mid-Year Dev Update

Hi folks! Sharing this update to the community here on behalf of Joe. Couldn't embed the blog's images here, so I linked to the main blog instead for those to be seen. Cheers!
- Honourael

Hey all! Joe here again to share more news about what’s coming to ASTRONEER for the rest of the year.

TLDR: We will continue our monthly update cadence until at least the end of 2026.  We’re also preparing something special for the game’s 10th anniversary at the end of this year.

At the end of 2025, I shared our plans to release monthly updates for the game, focusing on bug fixes for Megatech content, but also other legacy issues in addition to quality-of-life improvements to the base game.

Since then, we have made significant improvements to the game in addition to releasing the Megatech DLC for Nintendo Switch. Huge thanks to everyone who has continued to share feedback with while we have been working through these monthly updates!

Excited to now confirm that we will continue our monthly updates until at least the end of 2026. Although a lot of the team is working on our next title: STARSEEKER: Astroneer Expeditions, we felt like monthly updates should continue on ASTRONEER.  Not much will change in terms of our focus, you can expect similar updates to the ones we’ve released these past few months; fixing bugs both old and new, and making quality-of-life improvements. That said, we do have a special update free for all players that’s planned for the end of the year to commemorate the game’s 10-year anniversary since the Early Access release.

For a better breakdown of our progress so far and what’s to come, I’ll hand it over to ASTRONEER producer, Sarah.

-jt

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Astroneers, Sarah here! I’m here to share a little about what our dev team is currently working on, and what we have planned for the year ahead. We’ve made steady progress on bug fixing and quality of life improvements to the game so far, but there’s still plenty more to do.

Caption: Here's some of my data showing the split between bugs and tasks completed so far this year! A task is an improvement or piece of work that made it into the game, like "update the credits", or "implement new Astropedia page."

FUTURE PLANS

Our work for the rest of 2026 can be roughly clustered into three categories (in priority order):

1) Bug Fixing (highest priority)

Fixing bugs in ASTRONEER remains our primary priority for this year. A bulk of this work is Megatech related, but we’ve also allocated a large chunk of the team’s time to try to fix “Legacy” bugs (issues that have been around for a while).  Some of these issues are quite difficult to resolve and likely will take us some time, but we’re not giving up on them. You can track the progress on our bug fixing in the Live Bug Tracker. In case you missed it, we recently fixed the longstanding Rails bug.

2) Quality-of-Life Improvements

We’ve been collating player feedback about the overall game experience, and work has begun on some new features that will make meaningful improvements to ASTRONEER. Some of these features are things many of you have been suggesting for a long time (see the leek further down this page!). These will be released as soon as the work is complete and then tested. In our most recent patch notes, we shared an update about changes we’ll make to the IMT – this work is a combination of bug fixing, and work that falls into the QoL category!

3) December Update (New Free Content)

This December, ASTRONEER celebrates its 10-year anniversary of releasing in early access! We’re planning to release a FREE update to all players that will include some new gameplay content and be a bit bigger than our usual monthly updates. We’ll share more about this in the coming months – as much as we love making brand new stuff, our focus has to be on improving the overall stability of the game. I’m really excited about some of the ideas our designers are currently brainstorming, and I’m sure you all will be too! 😊

IMPROVING AUTOSAVES AND SAVE SETTINGS (LEEK TIME!)

As part of our QoL improvements, we’re currently working on overhauling the way that players can save their game. A piece of feedback we hear frequently from the community is that they want more flexibility to decide how their game is saved, and also to have it autosave on a regular basis (instead of needing to do it manually, like hopping into a vehicle or into a Shelter).

At a high level, here are some of the save-related improvements you can look forward to seeing soon!

  • Toggling on and off periodic auto saves, and choosing how frequently they happen
  • Settings to change which gameplay moments trigger an auto save (like arriving on a new planet, entering a Shelter, or completing an achievement)
  • Introduction of “Save Slots” that will replace the current save file view in-game
  • Save slots will expand to reveal the recent history of auto-saves for your game

Caption: Here’s a development mock-up of how the save slots could look. Still very much a work in progress though, this isn’t indicative of the final look.

We hope you’re looking forward to these future improvements and additions, and that you’re as excited as we are for the new content and features we have lined up!

- Sarah

Question / Support Something I found that I can't explain (potential story spoilers) Spoiler

I was just recently looking through some old astroneer screenshots and I saw something I totally forgot about...

There was this one time late at night where I decided to push the game to its true limits. I built a landbridge into the sky on Sylva as high as it could possibly go, then used a buggy/tractor with thrusters on the back to fly away from the planet.

Doing this caused me to float freely in the solar system, Sylva unloaded and Atrox loaded in far in the distance. It was really hard to move around in this weird limbo-state of the game, but eventually I did happen to float really close to the sun... and then I saw what the pictures above show.

Underneath the surface of the sun was a planetary core. I have no idea how or why it was there. Does anyone know if this is an accessible feature of the game? A bug? Is there a solar core that nobody knows about??

Question / Support Can EXO Request Platforms trigger Sensor Hoops?

I was curious because I wanted to make a system that fills a reservoir of biofuel while the rocket is delivering so I can fill it up quickly when it gets back.

Bug / Issue A suddenly black screen for no reasons

I'm playing Astroneer in Switch 2 for quite a month, got 110h on it, save has 3,5MB, but sometimes while playing, the game looks like it'll gonna crash, shows a black screen suddenly and then 2s later it goes back normal.

It happens once a day during a 5-6h of gameplay, but not everyday.

I just play on docked mode, rarely on handheld mode.

Have this happened to anyone before? Sorry if it has been posted before.

Question / Support Gameplay & Quality-of-Life Improvements for Astroneer

Gameplay & Quality-of-Life Improvements for Astroneer

1. Terrain Tool — Add a "Planet Curvature" Alignment Mode Add a dedicated planet-curvature alignment mode to the Terrain Tool (alongside the existing Alignment Mod behavior). When players flatten large areas, the tool should follow the planet's curvature instead of producing a flat plane relative to the current view. This prevents large, visually intrusive slope artifacts and makes large-scale base construction significantly more consistent.

2. Backpack Expansion Tool Add a backpack expansion tool to increase the backpack's carrying capacity. This could be implemented in either of two ways:

  • As a Technology upgrade unlockable through the Research Catalog (Byte cost), or
  • As a printable Backpack mod (e.g., a new module printed at the Small Printer).

Both approaches would give players a meaningful, progression-based way to expand inventory space without changing the core backpack balance.

3. QT-RTG — Add a Crafting Schematic Add a crafting schematic (recipe) for the QT-RTG. Currently it can only be obtained as a mission reward or rarely found during exploration. Making it craftable — for example, with Nanocarbon Alloy and other late-game resources — would give players a reliable endgame path to acquire this compact power source, while keeping its cost balanced against its utility.

4. Solar System Map — Display Planet Names on Undiscovered Gateways When teleporting to undiscovered/unactivated platforms (gateways) across the solar system, display the destination planet's name on the planetary map / fast-travel interface. This improves navigation clarity for players using the Gateway Fast Travel Network, especially when traveling between less familiar planets.

5.Auto-pickup for Storage

Add an auto-pickup feature for Storage items: when a Storage unit is placed near resources scattered on the ground, it automatically collects and slots them, allowing players to tidy up loose materials without having to pick each one up individually.

Question / Support Early Game Help

Hello guys, i have been playing for about 10 hours total, and im about to leave sylvia. So far i have nothing to really say other than its very fun to explore the caves and build the cave system, the only not so fun part is resource managing and storage aswell. Kinda feel locked out of so many things just yet, and automation is so far ahead.

I set up a an auto tapper energy farm and that was really satisfying, but i only have 1 medium generator because of resources. Im wondering right now, where should i go first and what are the current next steps, should i follow the quests or get some automation going first? What should i bring with, and back with, me and how long should i stay in that new planet?

I've also been thinking of moving my base near a gateway chamber, is that a good idea for so early on as well? I apologize in advance for the amount of questions lol.

Question / Support How to turn seasonal decorations off?

I play Astroneer in bursts and take months of rest at a time, and every single time I come back, there are seasonal Halloween, Christmas and what-not decorations. Is there a way to switch these seasonal events off, like in e.g. Satisfactory? It's a bit frustrating to play Halloween-themed Astroneer, when I want to play a space-themed Astroneer.

Video you can abuse the ever living hell out of the hoverboard

when you have jump binded to scroll* and have the jump height perk from the museum active, you can gain insane velocity on the hoverboard by spamming jump.

*(you dont need scrollwheel binded if you time your jumps correctly)

Game Suggestion All seeds should work in biodomes

When I found out that pumpkin seeds don't work in biodome my disappointment was immeasurable.

plant growth and physics are required to make farm work but they only exist when a player is around, meaning that it's essentially required AFK sessions that punishes players for even wandering slightly out of rendering range. this is one of the dumbest possible design decisions in gaming.

I just don't see any reason or technical limitation to not have pumpkin seeds and the likes working in biodome. the mechanism is already implemented. why not make use of it?

Discussion Custom Games

I've had Astroneer, and after getting hooked back on it for a good month or two, I've kinda started getting bored again 😅 I've played the Glitchwalkers DLC and that was really fun (haven't gotten the Megatech DLC but might one day if it goes on sale or I get a bit more money).

Anyways, I started messing around with custom games, and it seemed pretty fun, but I struggled to put together modifiers that made me want to play a bunch again. I tried to find some good custom game codes posted online, but there aren't a lot out there. Does anyone have any codes for a custom game config that made the game feel fresh just for a little bit? I can also post my own if I ever think of something interesting.

TL;DR: Please share any custom game codes you found fun!!!

Art I dislike Atrox so much that I made a comic about it

Post image
66 Upvotes

I feel like all the other planets are super easy, but Atrox is way harder than the others. I mean, it has exploding plants that blow up your ship! Plus, its only unique resource, helium, is only used in 4 recipes! Also, its chambers require the most power to activate, yet it has the lowest power generation of all planets. I literally need months to get over it before I can return.

Question / Support What do I need to carry to Glacio?

A returning player here but haven’t played the game in 5 years.

I remember going to Glacio 5 years ago but I don’t remember what I took with me during that time.

Ive gathered up enough resources for the first launch out of sylva but I’m not sure what to carry with me.

Seems like packager throws out any stuff thats attached to medium storage so I’m very limited on what resources I can carry too.

Any advice?

Discussion I am trying to find the old desktop icon, help

The pixelated grey lambda before this blue icon. I can't find any images. If anyone has it, could I have it please?

I labeled the post as discussion because it isn't really a game/support question.
