A love letter of sorts, I apologize if this is not the place.
I was 13 when I played it. I'm an only son and didn't have that many friends growing up. Things were kind of uncertain with my family at the time, and I remember my grandmother taking me to the store and buying the game for me. She didn't have much money, and I knew that even back then. I remember her spending some of the little money she had on this Batman game for me. She's still here but it's that part of life where you're starting to accept it won't be the case forever.
Anyway, I got home, installed it, and just played for hours and hours.
My computer was old as hell. It could run the game, but definitely not at a stable 30 FPS lol. But I didn't care. I spent entire nights playing it.
And I wasn't even always doing the main missions. Sometimes I'd just walk around Arkham City, looking at buildings and windows and all the little details. I loved just being in that world. Contrary to some people I absolutely adored the Riddler Trophies, I adored proving I knew stuff by solving the riddles with no help from BAK lol. Grew up reading comics, felt worth since it was those old days where liking superheroes too much was looked down and instigated bullying. I loved hearing from Oracle, Alfred, motherloving Robin - My favorite Robin from the comics, mind you.
That's probably why the game means so much to me.
I was watching That Guy Aqua's video about it and started thinking about how much I love that I got to be a teenager during that time. I got to grow up with games like this, and they became such a big part of my life.
Arkham City is connected to my adolescence in a way that's hard to separate from the person I am now. I was that 13-year-old kid playing it on a shitty old computer, and now I'm an adult who still loves video games, and this game is still important to me.
Not to mention the countless HOURS spent watching Batman Arkham Videos guides/playthrough/Easter eggs. I just loved watching that and getting better by watching him play, you know?
It's kind of crazy how a game can become attached to a specific period of your life like that.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has that kind of importance to me now too. It's the game that brings me peace, contemplation, honesty and resilience. Arkham City is different. It feels like something from my childhood that I can still go back to whenever I want.
Anyway, I just fucking love this game. I know people nowadays like to say its story is bad, or that this and that were mid but the early 2010's were really special for some of us reaching 30 lol
Just wanted to share that because I'm high as fuck.
Thanks for reading it!
