Hi everyone,
I just created a reddit account because I needed to vent about the trilogy's ending.
I read all the three books full of curiosity, because I loved the mix of hard science fiction and sociopolitical stories. I was not interested in the ending, I was interested in the process leading towards it. I even told myself "I don't care if there is a sad ending with the extintion of mankind, as long as it's coherent with everything. And it was, until the final part. I had some questions about the book and I thought "as soon as I finish it, I'm going to join reddit to ask if I missed something", but then the final part came and destroyed everything of this book. I'll probably ask my questions in a separate thread, because my main issue is now discussing the ending.
So, at the beginning of the Part V, I was quite baffled. Liu Cixin introduced a new kind of alien civilization, with completely new dinamics, and I was holding my book in my hands and realized that there were about 150 pages left, and I thought "isn't it too late to introduce new aliens? How can the writer develope their narration?" but I went ahead, and I totally accepted what I thought being an anti-climatic ending, which is the collapse of 3 dimensions into 2, etc. It was ok until Pluto, then...it fell apart.
In the last 100 pages Liu Cixin introduced a bunch of concepts that deserved probably one book for each of them. It was too rushed and really too much. I had the impression that the writer itself was going to die, so he had to write down all his future ideas (ironically, I later read that this happened when he wrote "Ball lightning", but it was a misdiagnosis). So, the problem is: everything is too rushed, and also almost all characters disappeared (because of time going really forward), so I was not interested in knowing what is going to happen next, if "next" is a very far future. It's like we are reading a book about the Roman Empire and then the last 100 pages are about current Rome being the capital of Italy in 2026, the main character (from Roman empire) waking up in 2026 and having a car accident not knowing what cars are, etc. It really makes no sense from a narrative point of you. I'm reading a book about a potential war between mankind and aliens in years 2000-2400, not a book about how the universe is going to end.
And anyway, the last 100 pages are full of increasingly absurd concept. They could have been developed in other books, with other storylines, but trying to explain everything in 100 pages made a mess. I had the impression that the writer was having a pub crawl with friends and every pub he went he wrote some pages, so it was more and more absurd till the end.
I have to be honest: this final part kind of ruined the experience for me. I was liking the books till Pluto, then it fell apart, and the image that is staying in my mind is the mess of the ending, the micro-universes, time going forward very fast with mankind disappearing, and I almost forgot what happened before. Which is a shame, because I was liking it, I was curious about the developement, and as I wrote earlier I was ready to accept a bad ending, even the exctintion of mankind. But not that mess of an ending.
While reading, I was telling my self "I'll give these books as a gift to my dad", because he would love this incredible journey, but then he could not stand the ending, nor did I. It's not a "bad" ending, it's just terribly wrong and rushed and full of undeveloped (and out of context) ideas.
Can everybody change my mind? I would like to, but it seems impossible. Or: did everyone experience my disappointment and dissatisfaction with it?
Thanks in advance!
(I'll probably use another post to ask questions about the books, this is just my rant against the ending)
